That "disfunctional", injured team made Spurs lose 4 in a row. And 40yrd Malone guarding Duncan on his prime. One of best campaigns that season. Always loved that team.

The Spurs were "dysfunctional" themselves, having lost 3 players to free agency and three to retirement. They tore that team down.

Detroit played a faster ball. All 5 guys were fit and can run. They were fast defensive, offensive and in the fast break. All 4 guys in Detroit can space the floor well. On top of that, they had 3-4 guys who can create their own shot. They all set picks for eachother and were willing to give up a shot for a better shot. They really distorted lakers defense with switchups & screens. If you watch the highlights they just clogged up lakers defense with messy traffic through screens and standing in defenders way. They played a very unorthodox way of basketball. Lakers were not fit to play Detroit because most opponents lakers played were either iso team, scored in paint, not everyone can shoots and their shooters were just catch and shoot guys. With pistons, almost everyone can shoot and they can do more than just catch and shoot. Shaq cannot defend perimeter and is unwilling to because the offense will punish the lakers if Shaq switches up. Lakers perimeter defense was bad. All 4 guys in pistons can space and can create their own shot. That was the main point. Add that with some elite defense from Detroit. Both perimeter and paint defense.
