    I just can't handle that alternate ending. Sellers is too brilliant

    Missing one of the funniest lines in the whole show at 0:50. "Wait till I see that twit Burt!"

    @BMan100 Cleese is playing Wallace Greenslade (The BBC announcer who narrated - and sometines got involved - in the story).

    I think he is playing the Straight man.

  • @Cyba_IT

    Had no idea what was going on through most of it but funny nonetheless. Presumably Cleese was acting the straight man for effect.

      @@Cyba_IT That's precisely my point: your telling us that you 'had no idea' (about something) is a statement about you, not about the clip, and is of no inherent interest to anyone but yourself.

      @julianwynne8705 Před rokem

      @@Cyba_IT How can a remark which simply points out the strict limits of interest of a statement (which claims to be about the Royal Family clip, but turns out not to be about that, but to be about you) be 'asinine'? You may not AGREE with the implication of my question, but from there to using the derogatory word 'asinine' is quite a step!

    Who is Sellers imitatIng in the end sketch, the woman with a Liverpudlian accent? The audience obviously recognises his impression, and applauds. So who is it meant to be ?
    These old scripts reworked for TV were more like romps. The cast is messing about more than their original producers would have allowed. Jokes and routines from other shows have been stuck in, too. It's fun for we fans, but not a 'real' Goon show.

      Stephen Gard John Lennon.

    • @bearheart2009
      @bearheart2009 Před 6 lety

      Its not John Lennon; thats not even a Liverpool accent. I dont know if its someone specific, but my first thought was that he was imitating a character from Corronation Street, which is set in Manchester and the big soap opera at th time. It might be a generic character from that show.

    Being an avid Goons fan (and not wishing to be a party pooper), these video episodes always disappoint me. I believe the Goon Show was meant for radio alone.
    This video script differs significantly from the radio one (I have a large collection of Goon Shows on tape). One example: Bluebottle, in reply to Neddy's statement "when the guard comes in with our dinner, let him have it!", replies, "what are we gonna eat?" Much more clever in my view.
    Cleese looked like he was not enjoying his role.

    • @LampoonGoon
      @LampoonGoon Před 6 lety +1

      Still, this is an invaluable record of the three engaged in their favourite professional engagement. Cleese I would have thought to be internally glowing at the task and his announcer evidencing steely determination to not "corpse" at all, in the knowledge that the Goons themselves would be doing enough of that.

    • @errolfellows409
      @errolfellows409 Před 6 lety +2

      I think that Cleese was somewhat out of his depth in the midst of these comedic geniuses.
      I enjoy these films of Goon Shows - simply because we can see the 3 lunatics ad-libbing and cracking up.
      However, the original radio shows will remain the highlight.
      I heard my first Goon Show in 1953 or 1954 - I was 6 or 7 - blew my little mind!

      Cleese is acting being unimpressed with the script. He is a big Goons fan.
