He also decided he despised Orson Welles, after the great man joked about his, Sellers' constant lateness to Sellers' face and proved a far more charming presence on set than Pete. So, he refused to shoot scenes he had with Welles with Welles present. You can imagine how that made things go.
I'll never understand the comments section decrying this joke as an inherently tragic and sad thing. The only thing tragic here is the inherent refusal of Sellers' so-called "fans" to accept that his roles were the genuine, real him. That's probably all he ever really wanted out of anybody, and was sadly denied to him to this day.

That "I had myself surgically removed" was a line Peter used many times. So much of humor that wasn't slapstick or physical went over my head too.

The odd thing is that in reality there was no Peter Sellers. He was great at all the characters because he had no strong sense of himself.
My dearly departed Mother, Sandra Lynn, LOVED Peter. His death very much upset her. She passed Nov 1st 1990 at 49 yrs old. I miss them both.
