Jared looking down saying “immediately blew it” and walking off screen as the blocks reappeared is my favorite moment so far this series. Poor guy, if you’d just waited a second longer.
REALLY HOPE HE SEES THIS lol
11:25
“Oh they respawn! … oh… they respawn…”
Yeah just watch the screen 😆
Current IQ: negative sixty and plummeting.
"What is this Megaman ass bullshit?" Projared's quote of the year
First of the many Projared2024 to come.
Would have been great if the developer added the Megaman sound effect.
Agreed. It even beats out the explicit quote from "Crystalis"
He's right, there's even River Man!
I think more accurately is what is this Castlevania BS.
"What is this Mega Man ass bullshit" is the *exact* sequence of words I used when I got to this point. XD
my thought was "oh, so we're mega maning now?" hahaha
The best thing about watching these playthroughs is when it's a game Jared is excited about. Even if it's not a game I personally enjoy or have played, the constant geek-out moments make it worthwhile. I slept on the FF hack, but I'm going to go back to it later.
Oh my, you're in for a treat. You mean Renaissance, right?
I completely agree. It's wonderful to see his face light up and just indulge.
"Let's play money-making game!" Knew Jared would like it! Hopefully he remembers to do it when the next episode starts :3
Too bad Link doesn’t have the Hookshot. Or Item-2.
I’m just waiting for the pesky 10 arrows to appear again as it being canon in Zelda games.
The facial expressions were what did it for me
25:32
SAY THE LINE, JERD!
"Sigh...lets play money making game..."
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
"I'm about to game over... I should hold on for the next level up..." 😂
Guess we shouldn't remind him of "one hit-point Jared."
Already looking forward to Jerd's frustration when he has to chain-downstab across all those fish behind the village (No, I haven't played this game, that was just my first thought when I saw it)
I was personally thinking the fairy spell. But yours sound way more interesting to see lol
I thought of this too!
Good old disappearing block jumping sections. The bane of every sidescroller.
Zelda 2 does indeed rule. It’s still a pretty unique game to this day. Always wanted to see a newer game in this style but yet to see one quite like it.
You go back to Bagu “sorry man it’s not mutual, he doesn’t have your pic up”. Awe poor unrequited NPC love
So sad for Bagu...maybe Error instead?
@@frogspony9602 to err is human
This is really fun to see. These fan remakes are really killing it right now. Keeping the original games feel but adding so much QoL and new cool stuff that even veterans can enjoy them again. i'm really digging this!
Anytime I hear Zelda 2 music, I also hear Brentalfloss singing lyrics to it.
I was just thinking the same thing while watching this and adding the lyrics lol.
"This is so fun to play!" Man, it's also so fun to watch. What I'm really loving on this channel lately are these reimaginings... taking childhood NES-era games and just tweaking, flipping, adding, and polishing juuuuuust a smidge so that the original game's look and feel shines through but we still have SO much exciting new content to explore. The little touches in this version are amazing (the little graphical changes like Bagu's hut looking so nice, the trophy on the pedestal), and having the map be so familiar yet with so many "wait THAT wasn't there before" spots is such a treat. And I appreciate the old-school Zelda II skills on display. Next ep can't drop soon enough!
I've been playing it nonstop since your first vid. I appreciate that in order to balance every quality of life improvement the creator decided to add at least one impressively annoying jump puzzle or minigame. Really nails that NES feel.
I really like how you still need to light torches and sconces with the candle. It's such a cool extra detail. I also like the way he incorporated dark sections into the palace. It really helps build a sense of need for the candle where previously, you only had a few dark caves in the original game and most of those could be done without much difficulty before you have the candle.
The Fire Spell can also be used to light candles from a distance, I've done all 6 palaces and haven't found a place where this is expected of you though.
Jared: "I kinda want to go to death mountain. ... That's a mistake."
No, that's _content_ .
Jared: "I kinda want to do Death Mountain."
Death Mountain: "Same to you, Jared" [Grabs bottle of lube]
One man's mistake is another man's content.
Why not both?
Also seeing my next video title " I Went Here Early Because I'm an Idiot │ Zelda 2 Remastered Part 3"
When a mob drops items is NOT random. Every 6 mobs defeated always drops either the potion or xp bag. Weak mobs are blue or 50 xp, stronger mobs are red potion or 200xp
This means metroid style mob grinding for magic refills (or health with the healing spell) is actually very viable and super easy in dungeons!
At least in the OG version, dunno for sure with this remake to be fair.
Also, I am definitely another Zelda 2 stan, one of my favs to go back and play.
it's the same in this. funny thing is, I've played the original dozens of times, but I've never farmed for magic until this playthrough.
I'm stan-ing pretty hard, too. lol
The note to river man:
DO U LIKE ME??
YES NO
CIRCLE ONE
Bagu, while stroking the portrait: “River Man, next time I’m in town, we’ll bang, ok?”
Headcanon: Bagu is the 3rd in a poly triad with River Man 1, but River Man 1 and River Man 2 are the main relationship, which is why Bagu is the only one with a picture.
11:06 Zelda II is one of those games that is horribly hampered by the system it's on. Of any game in the franchise, this one needs a remake most of all. Modern controls, expanded combat options, quality of life features, and a sword that isn't 2 pixels long would go a LOOOOONG way to making this game better.
Zelda 1, Zelda 2, and the Oracle games could use a remake, but I do agree that this needs it the most, but honestly just this fan remake would do just as well.
Agreed. As much as I love the style it was going for, the difficulty, pacing and limitations are really flawed and definitely needs an QOL improvement of an remake. Like Zero Mission did for Metroid 1.
Honestly, yeah it does need a remake. I never cared for it because of its limitations and if it can be improved then I'd probably play it.
I agree it is a flawed game, but what flaws are caused due to system limitations?
@fizz576 The fact you have to start back in Hyrule Castle and go back to where you left off instead of starting back in the beginning of the dungeon like you can in the first Zelda games surprisingly or towns you visited is what's limited. That and it also has many annoyance that games like Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden suffered from back on the NES; like the awkwardly controls, repetitive combat, unbalanced spells, knockback, poorly platforming design, cheap placements and other unfair difficulty.
22:06 they be havin' adventures in the stabbin' cabin
Waiting for when Jared remembers to follow his own rule at Zelda's Palace for extra content, however useful or useless it may be: _good adventurers go left._
its not just zelda's palace, towns are directional on which way you enter too!
@@user-nm5qq5vq9k - I think apollolux was eluding to a hint of where he should check. There's another area just to left of Zelda's Palace, if you exit to the left of where Zelda is resting.
I started playing this myself, and it's absolutely brilliant. The gameplay it 100% accurate to the original as far as I can tell, but the new content gives the game a whole new life. I'm not that far in, and there have already been some amazing surprises.
yep. I'm so greatful to jared for letting me know this game exists. had to play it myself immediately after watching episode 1. it's so freaking good.
so many new and cool things and little details and QoL features and and and.
my goty for 2024, no matter when it actually came out.
e: oh, and I'd also say the controls or 100% authentic. Or at least I can't make out any differences, which shows some real love and appreciation for the original. kudos to the creator (the name escapes me rn)
Anyone have a link to download this game, or does anyone know if they have made a fiscal copy yet?
@@clantonfamilyadventures5460 The link is in the description.
9:31 Whatever this is about.
Me: I still hope it's a portal to Castlevania and Simon Belmont is gonna show up.
This is definitely turning out to be an excellent game! For those who love the second game and wanted something more? This is for them! You can tell the love the creator has for this creation 😊
This was the first time I watched a CZcamsr play a game and I had to IMMEDIATELY go and play it myself!! Love to play alongside with you :D
same. first thing I did after watching episode 1 was downloading the game. love it.
I don't get the hate for Zelda 2 either. There is a reason why it's #8 of the best selling NES games.
The reason was the first was so revolutionary and it was the NES, not exactly a stellar library to pick from at the time.
Yeah, given what the first game did, it does seem kind of weird that they would make the sequel a sidescroller. On its own though, it definitely holds up as a fun nes classic
@@baconcatbug I love Zelda 1 too, but it's only revolutionary thing was that it had a save feature everything else was already done years ago in other games and on other platforms. To me Zelda 2 has fallen to the same fate as Mario Bros 2 and that is internet hind sight. "Zelda 2 must be bad because it's not like the others" "Mario Bros 2 is not a real Mario game because of Doki Doki Panic. But in reality the Zelda series wouldn't be what it is today without Zelda 2.
@albert_vds It's because of the difficulty and pacing. There are many cheap and unfair moments and if you get an Game Over, you have to start all the way back to Hyrule Castle and go back to where you died from.
Probably the difficulty? I heard that was one of the most common reasons.
27:28 XD "I'm back, just holding up my letter from Bagu like a hall pass."
Dammit, I want more. I guess it is time to go binge the Zelda 2 Randomizer playlist.
Also, she obviously took the mirror to the cemetery to reflect on her past mistakes. Some of them were grave...
I figure you’re expected to Downstab bounce across the jumping fish.
I wonder if you have to Downstab your way across the water in the town. Kinda like how you have to do it in Hollow Knight occasionally.
oh man...I've played that section earlier today and this didn't even cross my mind. I did it a different way.
@@Retro_RainerLet me guess, Fairy spell? That’s how I would do it.
Erdrick is strictly a Dragon Quest reference. His mention in Final Fantasy is an Easter egg for Dragon Quest, although the Japanese version of Final Fantasy had the gravestone say Link instead of Erdrick. I’ve also heard that the grave for Erdrick is in the Japanese version of Zelda II in Saria town but was taken out for the American version until Hoverbat put it back in.
2:46 Zelda: GUESS AGAIN IRON KNUCKLE
I played this game on 3ds years ago (and on NES first), and got to the final palace, but got stomped by the boss RIGHT before the final boss. I still have regret to this day that I got SO close to beating it, but never quite did. I love this game, and these changes are incredible! I love, love, LOVE watching Jared play these awesome games! And with these changes so he's geeking out?! EVEN BETTER! I'm geeking out too!!
11:32 XD Oh Jared, if you had just waited a moment.
That laugh at the end. I am glad that he is really happy about the game.
Hey Jerd you can press O (not zero) to open options window where you can change stuff like having to manually light the sconces, change screen flash color, toggle screen shake and even switch between sfx sets and some other stuff.
6:50
Me: "Look at this Megaman-ass room!"
Jerd: "What is this Megaman-ass bullshit?"
Glad we're on the same page here, lol!
(The only difference is that you have to do this platform puzzle, and I get to sit back and watch!)
I love that change to the 1-up dolls in this. The main strategy I used to use to play this on the NES was to not actually crystal the palaces until the end of the game, make sure i had 3 lives, THEN marathon completing the palaces, grabbing the dolls, then go to the end with like 12+ lives since if you're max level, any level-ups would give you a life instead. Really glad you don't have to do that, but also curious what happens when you get a level when maxed out in this.
Thanks for this walk down nostalgia lane.
I honestly didn't expect to enjoy so much the music of this old timer game 😛
Never played Zelda 2, but I’ve strangely always liked it. The side scrolling hack ‘n slash/poke ‘n slash, the rpg level up mechanics, the godly music, error and the healing lady and her (“stop by awhile” 😏)and the ending. Every time jared does a playthrough I always watch. I like it too.
I can't be the only one who heard the Mega Man block noises in my head.
Blocks: Bwooh, bwooh…
Me: Oh, it’s not too ba… *falls in lava* WORST FUCKIN’ GAME EVER! AAAAARGH! /😂
This remaster is VERY WELL DESIGNED! Love how the menu is now really informative and there are maps. Wish they had this detail in the original release!
"I might be one of the few Zelda 2 stans out there." Your video on Zelda 2 singlehandedly got me to play and fall in love with Zelda 2, and now it's my favorite Zelda game
11:07 That makes two of us. Zelda II is one of the best in the entire series and still has the best music in the franchise. I replay and beat it about once a year.
I also always loved Zelda 2, and this remake is such a beautiful tribute
Once again, great watch. Pumped for more of this.
Another series that will be full of laughs and good times, can't wait to see more new secret areas.
Aww man hoverbat fixed that slime in north tower. Finding that one drove me nuts.
what happened before the fix?
@@Retro_Rainer you had to use the jump spell and jump on a dark cloud off a pillar on the screen right of sleeping Zelda.
@@HunterPBrown Hoverbat removed it because people were having a hard time figuring it out. It was the only area with a dark cloud to jump on, and it was hard to miss because it would go by and take several seconds to respawn, so a lot of people never realized it was there. Would have been kind of cool if he kept it in and used the mechanic in other areas so people were aware of looking for dark clouds to jump on.
@@amerk6601 yeah... I was one of them. A buddy of mine called it a "Nintendo Power game" move.
@@HunterPBrown - I love that definition. I can't recall how many times I had to look back on a past issue growing up to find a secret in a game, and usually lo and behold it'd be a small clip in one of the Power magazines. I was able to beat Bionic Commando, Crystalis, Castlevania II, and so many other games thanks to Nintendo Power.
I'm waiting for the 10 arrows upgrade!😂
In a hilarious turn of event, I got the game and started playing along and got stuck. guess i'll wait for YOU to progress far enough to help ME! great vid
I've finished palace 3 today. maybe I can help you.
The palaces probably don't turn to stone because there are missables now, like the heart container and the orange slime you got. The Zelda 2 randomizer turned it off for the same reason.
The original game didn't turn the palaces to Stone until you obtained all missable items (the Dungeon Item), that system could've been expanded to include the Orange Slimes, Heart and Magic pieces.
As it is now, there's no way to remember if you've done everything in a Palace without writing it down.
This is so cool. I loved seeing that once you get the trophy, you actually return it to the village! That's such a nice addition.
Thank you so much for this series! I have been tryna beat Zelda 2 since I was a kid. I also just recently found this project, so it's great to see a decent playthru. Couldn't find any guides anywhere for this great game.
I'm loving this series so much! It's cool seeing you excited about new stuff in such a retro classic. The remaster seems really rad. Might try it myself at some point!
12:18 , Phrasing lol 😂
Never played this game, but those boomerang guys look hard af and I'm impressed at how easily you block every shot with your shield. It definitely shows that you've played this game a lot!
More of this. 1.this game needs more love. 2. Watching jerd do these types of games are amazing. 3. Need him to do a randomizer of this lmao
I hope Jared learns about IsabelleChiming's VRC6 Soundtrack option for this game. It's SOOOOO FREAKING GOOD.
17:52 With how much you were letting yourself get hit, I would've gone with more life.
I love that North Castle is an actual.. castle... and you can explore it!!!
Something about Jared and Zelda games that just go so well together!
Not gonna lie.. I'm here with you Jared for LoZ retro plays, randomizers and revisited versions like this. Keed them coming man!
I watched the first episode, and I was like OMG I have to play this. Now I'm back after playing through the game twice to watch the rest of the series. I recommend anyone with any nostalgia for the original to go play through this, it's amazing.
Watching jared have fun with zelda misadventures is always a treat! Keep 'em coming and i'll keep hitting that like button
26:05 - With the FIRE spell, you can come back here!
16:09 Downward thrust across the jumping fish? Maybe?
I'm very much enjoying these. I really appreciate how he knows the original so well and gives an authentic perspective.
My first time playing Zelda 2 was on the gamecube as part of the Zelda collection. When I first played it I thought it was weird since I had never seen another Zelda game like it before. I also thought it was far more challenging until I watched your first play-through Jared and learned you could actually grind out levels and get exp to level stats. One day I wanna give it another shot again knowing now that leveling up is a thing.
Loving watching this reimagining so far! All the new stuff is so cool. This game definitely deserves the love. Still one of my favorite Zelda games.
Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games and honestly probably the zelda game ive played the most.
Looking at it objectively, its one of the oldest and still one of the best early examples of a metroidvania, and i really wish it would get more credit for that.
If it went by any name other than Zelda, it would be remembered a lot more fondly than it is.
Looked forward to this. Keep’em coming!
This remake looks so awesome, I can't wait for this whole playthrough to unfold! Really loving your choices lately, Jerd
I love these types of series! I played FF Renaissance because Jared played it.
I'm really interested in seeing where FFR is gonna go. Following the discord the plan is to have at least 20 different classes in the game so that should be super fun and definitely worth revisiting for Jared at some point.
Jared: "Let's skip the level up and hold on for another level up"
Completely ignoring that finishing a palace earns an automatic level up. He could've gotten two level ups at once.
Also, skipping Palace two to enter Death Mountain, speaking of a self induced difficulty spike.
Sorry, needed to get that out of my system, I am loving this, but this are two moves that I wouldn't do after playing this game.
i dont know how to put it in the right words for what i want to convey, but i really feel like Hoverbat really nailed
the ideal of a modern 2D sidescrolling Zelda game. and i mean with the amount of exploring and secret finding as you go
around this version of the Zelda 2 game world. i feel like the original game is somewhat straight forward.
the only other way i can put it is that this gives me the same feeling i get when i play OoT/MM.
The exit is probably so you can heal up if the Super Slime kicked your ass.
Enjoying this playthrough so much!! Thanks Jerd.
This game was always a banger. My niece and nephews demanded to watch me play this till I beat it every time I came over.
The part with the water could also need the down stab to pogo across them.
Love all your Zelda content, keep up the amazing work!
Debating whether I should just forget about this until all the videos are out so I can binge watch it all at once...or keep checking every other day for the next one. Loving this so far.
Now that PJ is playing ZaLiA, I'm really ready for daily uploads again!
Or, I could come over for "dudes to be dudes" and he could be distracted for the next 6-8 weeks.... I do have a letter from Bagu..
Zelda II is awesome, but my first time, I never found the Life spell and it was pretty brutal. and there are definitely screens where things are coming at you from all sides, non-stop that is less than chill. I can see people missing important things and getting frustrated.
Had the same experience as a kid, but it motivated me to get better at mastering its combat. Though, I got stuck looking for Three-Eyed Rock Palace for six long years.😅
Haven't played this yet but, it looks cleverly made. Especially that part that seems to require down-thrust surfing to get across, that's brilliant. I can't wait to see more.
Going for the hammer is exactly where I am now. Can't wait for the next video!
I don't know why I enjoy zelda 2 so much since I've never been past the first castle but I need more of these videos, I'm loving this.
I love Zelda II, I learned to master back in the NES days, I had no choice but to do so. Felt like a real accomplishment. And I even beat shadow Link legitimately.
Can't wait to see how long this series goes for. I'll be watching it with great interest.
Even more than I'm loving this, I love how much you're loving this.
Good thing the clearly marked out water boots section is close by that village, Jared might remember the fairy spell exists when he goes back there.
The section under North Castle reminds me of several rooms from Faxanadu.
Thank you for keeping me away from depression with your videos! Keep gaming on my friend!
I started this 2 days ago, and I'm shocked at how much more unique, and difficult the game is. I've only completed two palaces but dang was the 2nd much more tough than I thought.
was it tho? I've played it today and I wouldn't say it's more difficult.
@@Retro_RainerFWIW, it's definitely different.
The picture in Bagu house was the Deadly Towers dude.
I am so happy about this playthrough happening! No joke, when first learning of this game mod, my first thoughts were "can't wait until Jared gets his hands on it" :)
I remember renting this game and playing it for precisely one round of deaths when I was maybe 7 years old.
I hated it.
But I think it's finally time to try it again.
keep going! great series 🙂
21:47 They might just be roomates.
Zelda 2 was always the black sheep of the Zelda franchise, the game everyone loved to hate because it was so different, to the point that Nintendo never really tried to incorporate anything from it in any later games. They made future installments in the series look and feel more like the original. I loved Zelda 2 growing up. It was more complex than the original. It was so hard for me as a kid, though. The death screen always scared me, and the Game Over screen with Ganon's laugh, so I refused to play it unless it was the middle of the day and the house was full of people.
