  • This is layout construction update #42, for 3 May 2023, on my HO Scale model railroad layout.
    In this update I talk about new trackwork, ongoing work on the Powder River stock pens, 3D printing, installing and painting backdrop panels, and starting the build of the Central Valley Model Works through truss bridge.
    The layout represents the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad and the Chicago & North Western Railway in central Wyoming during the timeframe 1930-1945. The layout is all steam except for the Doodlebugs that were used in passenger service between Casper and Lander. Model locomotives include Proto 2000 , Broadway Limited, Spectrum and Bachmann.
    The layout features Fast Tracks turnouts and fully weathered rolling stock. All mainline curves are superelevated. The layout is multi-deck with nearly nine scale miles of mainline track. One of the key scenic features is a twenty-plus foot long representation of the Wind River Canyon near the center of the state.
    The layout is run by a radio NCE Power Pro DCC system, augmented with wi-fi using a Wifitrax WFD-31 and TCS UWT-50 throttle.
    Backdrops are panoramic photos of the actual locations around the state. Track arrangements in most towns on the layout are based on Sanborn maps of the towns in the 1930's and 1940's. Industries, with only one or two exceptions, are representative of actual industries that existed in each town during my modeled period.
    This series of videos is published monthly on the 3rd.

    As usual, a well produced, educational and inspirational look at your layout. It's clear that you are so much more than just a pipe-fitter! 😃

    Hi Mark, everything seems to be progressing nicely and some lovely modelling too, I particularly like the stock pens and that girder bridge even though it seems a little tricky on the instructions!
    Cheers for now Mark, John

      Hi John, thanks! I'm having a great time building the stock pens! Probably got 20 hours into them so far. The bridge is also fun, but it would be more fun if my skills were better and if I could make heads or tails out of some of the instructions.

    I'm sure glad you sold that turntable, so you won't be trying to pawn it off on me, and trying to convince me I needed it on my layout. hahaha Glad someone else liked the turntable enough to relieve you of it. Also glad you didn't totally destroy me in your video. haha Looking forward to returning to help with the swingout bridge next week. In order to help with the time, I hope you will take the time between now and then to cut all the pieces, so that when I arrive, we can gitter done before 5:00PM, when I HAVE to leave for home!!!! Great update as always!!!! looking forward to visiting next week!!!

      Well, I decided to be nice to you (it was close, though! 😁). I'll cut the plywood sheet to the right profile, but beyond that it will be cut and fit, cut and fit. So we'll see how it goes. Looking forward to next week!

    Nice video. I to print my Tie Inserts. The FDM printers seems to produce a better product for this purpose than my resin printer. Now that I have painted the ties etc. the look real good and you do not see them. The speed factor is amazing. minutes to get an entire 12 track yard done.

      Thanks! I started with a tie template I found on Thingyverse, then went on to design my own from measurements I took off a Fast Tracks Quicksticks tie strip I had. I hope they look good when painted.

    Hey Mark, Love your stock pens. You said you ordered more railing for your pens. Could you share the information on the railing types and where you ordered them from? I plan on about three small stock pens for my layout, and just curious as to where you are getting your material from for your pens.
    Found your channel before you moved to Wyoming and went back and watched all of your videos. Your layout is coming together nicely. I am always excited to see your new video in my CZcams notifications! Keep on keeping on.

    • @mapruitt
      @mapruitt  Před rokem

      Thanks! The stock pen fence railing is from Mt. Albert (Fast Tracks). It's scale 2X10 basswood. The posts are 8X8 (probably a bit oversized).
