This channel is about my HO model railroad, The CB&Q in Wyoming, located in Casper Wyoming
2024 07 22 LATE Fourth Birthday
The CB&Q in Wyoming has been under construction for over four years.
The layout represents the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad and the Chicago & North Western Railway in central Wyoming during the timeframe 1930-1945. The layout is all steam except for the Doodlebugs that were used in passenger service between Casper and Lander. Model locomotives include Proto 2000, Broadway Limited, Spectrum and Bachmann.
The layout features Fast Tracks turnouts and fully weathered rolling stock. All mainline curves are superelevated. The layout is multi-deck and will have nearly nine scale miles of mainline track when completed. One of the key scenic features is a twenty-plus foot long representation of the Wind River Canyon near the center of the state.
The layout is run by a radio NCE Power Pro DCC system, augmented with wi-fi using a Wifitrax WFD-31 and TCS UWT-50 throttles.
Backdrops are panoramic photos of the actual locations around the state. Track arrangements in most towns on the layout are based on Sanborn maps of the towns in the 1930's and 1940's. Industries, with only one or two exceptions, are representative of actual industries that existed in each town during my modeled period.

Happy Birthday, layout! Look forward to many more years of videos. =)
Thanks Don! I hope there's many more years too!
Congratulations sir on a beautiful and ambitious layout. Thank you for sharing all your hard work.
Thank you, Joseph!
Great overview of all your fantastic hard work Mark! Can't wait to see what year five brings!
Thanks Dennis! Looking forward to year five as well!
Happy 4th belated Birthday CB&Q/C&NW railroads in Wyoming. I can only imagine the great accomplishments the next 365 hold for you!
Thanks Charlie! Hey, when are you going to come over to join in an ops session (or just to visit and run some trains some other time)?
@mapruitt That's another question I was asking myself while watching the birthday special extravaganza. I'm northeast of Billings eating lunch at the moment.....just a workin' on the railroad!
If you hate computers, then why do you use them to print and make your switch lists etc??? Tee Hee
Because I hate writing things out even more!
@@mapruitt So much for prototype. hahaha
@@dmcry600 I'll bet the real railroads used a spinner system to randomly send cars to industries too. VERY prototypical!
@@mapruitt Yes, that's really how they did it. Trust me, It's a true story!!!!!
As my late-Aunt used to say when she infrequently visited us from the UK : * My ..... But You Have Grown * ! Congrats Mark on 4 years of sterling commitment and quality work on the CB&Q / CNW In Wyoming; being across ALL aspects of Layout construction and MR-ing ! Your monthly update presentations are always informative and interesting. It was a privilege to have joined youse Guys for OpS during late-October 2023 ! All the best for your future endeavours. Lakka + Cheers For Now / Johnny 🚂 [ PS : I have asked Dave to investigate as to why I have not received payment of my agreed Appearance-Fee ... ! ] 😆
Thanks Johnny! Dave is certainly the right guy to talk to about any appearance fees. He handles all that stuff!
@@mapruitt Johnny told me you owe him $4300.00 for his presence at your 1st OP Session. So cough it up!!! You should feel bad about stringing him along like you have, but I know you don't, and won't. Nice guy!!!! Hi Johnny!!!! Cheerz!!!!!
@@dmcry600 And as you're the guy to talk to about it, you should just send him the check. I'll reimburse you later {cough, cough, wink, wink, nod, nod}.
@@mapruitt Oh yea, you can be trusted..... cough cough.
Without Dave, what would get done??? HAHA HAPPY BIRTHDAY CB&Q & CNW in Wyoming!!! That was a nice update!!!! You should really be nicer to Dave!!!!! haha
A lot more probably! Certainly there wouldn't be those rebuild and replanning delays... If I was nicer to Dave, he'd think I don't like him anymore!
@@mapruitt Well, I guess you don't appreciate my help?? HAHA I think I will be ill next month. Rodney and me get no respect!!!! haha
@@dmcry600 Yeah, and Rodney at least deserved some. 😁
@@mapruitt Well, you have a point there. haha
Happy 4th Birthday to your layout. What a masterpiece, it is truly stunning. Thanks for the update, looking forward to the next one.
Thanks! Cameras make everything look better.
Congrats on her 4th birthday!
Thanks Claude!
Happy 4th Birthday to the layout! Thanks for the history and updates, you've made some amazing progress on such a large layout. If I am ever gonna be in Casper...😀
Thanks Paul! I'll look for you in October!
Nice Layout great Action keep up the Awsome Work.
Thanks!
Hope the med tests all show negatives!!!
Thanks Bear! Me too!!
Thanks a lot Buddy!!!! You wait. I have a camera too. Too bad I deleted some of those plumber pictures I had of you. All in all, it was a Great update, but too short. You should have got more done. As always, I enjoyed the video!!!! Now get busy and finish staging and all the scenery!!!!
Thanks. I was glad I had that great picture of you! If you would get down here more often, progress would be a lot faster. Or maybe a lot slower!
@@mapruitt After that picture, I don't know if I can get back to Casper. I'm planning to be ill quite a lot. haha
Great progress!
Thanks Don!
Thanks for sharing your progress Mark, always enjoyable!
Thanks Dennis!
Looks like a great time!
Funny thing, we have those same wood folding tables at 4:10. I love the long section that's got some landscaping in it. It'll be fun to see the rest get to that point. Congrats on another successful ops sessions and a good month!
Hi Frank! Thanks! I had to go back and look at the video to see what you're were talking about with the tables. Pretty traumatic having to go look at my own video!
Awesome Video Mark, so much progress too. What a large RR, love it. I was on a work trip to the Kent area back in 89'. Happy 4th, be safe and stay well and good luck with upcoming appts.
Thanks Rob! I haven't been back to the Seattle area since my niece got married close to 20 years ago. Nothing there to draw me back anymore.
You've gotten more accomplished in four years than I have in twenty four. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Jeff! (I'm sure you're exaggerating...)
Onward and upward !
Thanks Charlie! Lots of onward yet. Not so sure some of it's upwards, though...
Another fine update with a lot getting done. Enjoy the holiday weekend! Better check on that Dave guy's water bottle. Might be spiked. 😀
Hi Paul! Thanks! Yeah, I have to keep an eye on Dave all the time. 😆
@@mapruitt I think it's the other way around. I was keeping an eye on Mark, and what I saw was deeply disturbing. haha
@@dmcry600 Yes, I am very disturbed!
@@mapruitt I agree. VERY disturned!!!! haha
Another Awesome MOnth.... at some point you should put the cronkrite segments together into onw video....
Thanks Tom! Interesting idea about the Cronkite segments. I'll give it some thought.
Hi Mark, A month sure flies by! Thanks for the update and glad to see you staging coming closer to being exactly what you need. Love the Cronkite segment! Hope all goes well with your tests. Take care Scott
Hi Scott. Thanks! Months are flying by like days. I hope things go well too!
Very enjoyable video Mark! Thank you! Scott
Thanks Scott!
I really had fun this time. However, you kept me too busy running trains. haha I was overworked big time!!! I was trying to pay you back the next day, but left too soon. Next time I come to your house, I'll try and fix your layout some more. You need all the help you can get. At least I know how to read a level. haha
Oh boy. That means a longer time before the layout is finished! I won't put you on level-reading duty again.
@@mapruitt Be afraid, be VERY afraid. I can really help you finish your layout in record time. Trust me!!!!
@@dmcry600 True story?
Hay Mark : I skeem you need a full-time roving Videographer during your OpS; mate .... Pay the AirTicket and I am THERE; Bro ! Nice one and Best Regards to the known * Usual Suspects * who I had the pleasure / privilege of meeting during the End-October 2023 Ops .... And that even includes Mr. David Todd ( Esq ) ! Envious ? Of COURSE I am ! Lakka + Cheers For Now / Johnny 🤙🚂🇿🇦
Hi Johnny! Consider it done! 🤪See you in October!!
Great as always Mark. One suggestion....get Dave a step stool.. :)
Thanks Steve! There are three step stools around the layout, including one at Riverton. I think maybe Dave just doesn't know how to use one (hi Dave! 😁).
@@mapruitt They are round the layout, but hidden behind stuff. Me on a styep stool is dangerous!!!!
@@dmcry600 If by hidden you mean sitting under the edge of the layout in plain sight, you're right. 😏
Great video of reality model railroading! Warts and all! I'm looking forward to the next session.
Thanks (I think)! 😀
Looks like a good time, even if Dave is there!!
Yeah, even Dave can't kill the joy. 😁
It was a lot of fun! Thanks, Mark!
@@mapruitt Yea, but I try!!!! haha
@@dmcry600 LOL!
That looks like fun! Pizza and then Steam locos!
Thanks Paul! It IS fun! Come out in October and join in!!!
Nice video of the gang running some trains, looking good mark!
Thanks Rob!
I have a few skid marks on my head from working between the two decks. I think if I move I will take that 4x8 sheet of plywood and make a 16"x24' single deck switching railroad, maybe in proto48 but the tolerances are so close.
Oh the joy of double deck construction.
LOL! You hit the nail on the head with that comment, Mark! If I ever move again, the next layout might just be a 4X8.
Thanks for the updates. Good to see the progress.
Thanks John
Mark, great monthly progress. Keep it up.
Thanks!
You're track supplier must love you, Mark! And I'm sure your cork provider has you on his Christmas card list. But I'm not sure what kind of message you're sending by spending so much time "laying down on the job". 😆😂😝 As always, I'm amazed at your ability to keep going and going. I just hope to move to a smaller house, but with a good size basement like you have... and have the war chest to afford it. In the meantime, I collect and reflect, modelling vicariously through your monthly updates. 🛤
LOL! Hi Frank! Track supplier hates me. Some of the track I'm using now has been on three earlier layouts!
Goodness, Mark! This month you've gone through an awful lot of work and frustration! Congrats on your preserverance! 😃👍👍
Thanks Richard! It's been a lot of work!!
Typical ! Yes; I DID notice your penchant for lying down on the job for days on end to pad-out your monthly update presentation ! Seriously; without an extra pair of experienced hands ( Dave's ? ) available; incrementally and equally raising the Staging-Yard * Ace-Out * [ On your own ]; was certainly one hellovva undertaking ! All in all; looking good Mark. The S-Y will certainly offer-up a new dimension to your OpS ! Well done; ou maat ! 🤙👍💫💥🚂
Thanks Johnny! I hope it actually works!!
@@mapruitt Ye of little faith and understanding ! 😁
@@johnnyeveritt5695 Me of pragmatism and reality!
Hello Mark! I'm sleeping in Billings tonight, need to watch this and get to sleep, plane leaves early in the morning for home. I'll chat more later on....
Hi Charlie, Watching this is a sure cure for insomnia... so I've been told.
Fantastic progress this month, Mark!
Thanks Bruce!
That is quite an accomplishment Mark! Looking forward to seeing some trains trans-versing staging .... to and fro!
Thanks Dennis! I just hope it works when all is said and done! I have visions of trains derailing all over the place.
@@mapruitt I’m sure it will work flawlessly!
Another great update, Mark. You got a lot done this month! That creeper is a good tool to have, but I would need a Block-and-Tackle setup with some rope to get me standing upright again. 😀
Thanks Paul! I really like the block and tackle idea, too...
Great update and huge progress! Even with Dave "helping." 😂 This should really enhance your operating sessions.
LOL! You got that right about Dave! Without his help the layout would be finished by now!
@@mapruitt My Pappy always told me, "Son, you're not very good, but you sure are slow". I try and live up to his expectations!!!
@@dmcry600 You certainly do, Dave!
Looking good Mark. That is a lot of work, wow. My back and neck are shot as it is, so what you are doing is amazing. But it is coming along. and that is the way it is, today June 2024. Stay well and enjoy.
Thanks Rob!
See, without my helping hand, you can actually get a LOT of stuff done. I am amazed at how much you did, and I'm just so proud of you!!!! I knew you could do it all by yourself. I probably should stay home on the 11th so you can get MORE stuff done, so I'll see you on the 25th for the OP Session. You'll be glad I stayed home on the 11th. I'm pretty sure I will be VERY ill on the 11th. I feel it coming on right now. haha Hey, NICE update by the way!!!!!
Yeah, whatever...
That sure is a lot of work. 😅. Creeper is a good mrr tool for us old guys. You’re right getting back up is the hardest part.
Thanks Fred. I'll be glad when it's behind me!
Great update!
Thanks Joseph!
Making progress. The construction plan of your staging yard is fun to watch. Looking to do something similar. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John! Now all I have to do is make staging work!
Awesome update Mark! Keep that RIP track crew in line! TCS & BLI is a killer combo. Those will be great! That tie height difference has gotten me a time or 2 as well. Seems crazy that that isn't more standardized. Awesome Awesome work sir.
Thanks Ray! I'll be very happy when the staging yard is finally installed! By the way, I'm on the track and wheels standards committee for the NMRA, and we recently talked about maybe setting tie standards of some sort. General consensus was that it would be a huge can of worms to develop and implement. Maybe in the future... Considering that there are no standards for tie thickness, the manufacturers have done a pretty decent job keeping their track usually within five to ten thousandths of each other (at least the major manufacturers, like ME, Peco and Atlas).
Even with a bit of a speed bump, you made some great progress! Overall, your plans have worked out really well, and it's pretty much impossible to pull something this complicated off without a little adjustment here and there. I think you've done great! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing what you have to show next month. =)
Thanks Don! Many more replies like that and I'll have to take up garden railroading - my head won't fit through the basement door! 😁
