    I bought a similar slide-on angle guide. I used it once and threw it away. It was very tight to fit on the blade, and any little bit of slurry from the sharpening that gets under it scratches the hell out of the sides of the blade when you try to take it off.

    Very cool sharpening overall. Great set for simple steels I have ones that are similar and after using diamonds it's hard to go back to water stones even for the simple steels, but for the price it's hard to go wrong with a set like this. Great way to learn as well as they don't cut as fast as diamonds. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

    Now most of my ceramic stones now are over with my mom so I can sharpen her knives when I'm there. I really like the Shapton Pro #120 for removing chips and changing angles, Then a large King stone 1000/6000 grit cobo, and the Green Brick of joy ( Naniwa Aotoishi #2.000). Those 3 stones are usually all I recommend now for "basic steel" along with a high quality strop and a Nagura that can dress all of them. Those are my 3 recommended stones mostly because of the value and the amount of stone one gets for the money. I also really like the Shapton Pro 320 (Blue-Black), it's just such a beautiful stone to work on, but it's not a must. I would say either go with a Shapton Pro 120 or 320 (unless one really wants both).

    • @xade7863
      @xade7863 Před 6 měsíci

      Prolly to late but I’d get the dmts I got one of these kits first and it was so hard to learn on. If your angle ain’t perfect you will cut into the stone but diamonds also don’t give as good of feedback. I ended up getting a Arkansas stone and a old sic oil stone and that was the best help I ever got for learning as well as a small Diamond pocket stone and I realized why diamonds are so much better. I’ll pull my old water stones out sometimes and use them aswell and for $30 they work good if you already know how to sharpen.

    I got A set just like this from Amazon about a year ago, it's a different brand but they're probably all made in the same factory😂 I only tried it once so far and when I was done using it I didn't give the stones long enough to dry out. Think I let them dry for a few hours in the Sun 🌞 and wrapped each Stone in a paper towel then put them away in a plastic 50 cal ammo type toolbox. 2 or 3 weeks later I opened it up and there was mold on all the stones 😅 so I soaked them in bleach and scrubbed them off. I let em dry for a few days before storing this time. Most of the mold came off except for the Whitestone still had black dots.😂✌️

      @@NeevesKnives Yeah I know they got the regular 4 micron Stroppy stuff. But on the Stroppy Stuff site the 4 micron mirror polish links to the DBK shop since it's a collab between them. But If you ask him I'm sure he can send it to you since he makes it. It's so great if you want a mirror polish on a blade or a large bevel like a scandi grind. It got a lot more carats of diamonds in it, so it's better for polishing rather than regular stropping. There is a video of it on the DBK shop, under the product. Can't remember if that one uses Poly crystalline or Mono Crystalline like his regular Stroppy stuff compound.

    I can be a bit goofy commenting under Jared's videos and like to discuss the most badassest knife of all-time, in the history of the universe... which is obviously the Dragon Bowie. But I feel this is another good time to be sincere and make the point that there is not one other youtuber that explains the details of the knife sharpening proocess, including stropping, as well as Jerad does.Even in a video where you said you werent going to focus on the actual techniques of sharpening, you freaking nailed so many tiny little detaisl that 99% of other sharpening videos seemingly skips, feels is not important or just svcks at describing. I feel like I should direct anyone thats new to the craft to his channels. But then again I'd rather them suffer through 50-100 shytty knife shaprening videos like I had to before I introduce them to Mr. Kneeves. Obviously Id send them right to Kneeves Knives because more subcribers and likes is best for Jerad's channel.
    Sorry to be redundant, but I just appreciate someone cutting through the bullshit and simply telling you what you need to know. So thinks again Jerad for all the fun and informations you share with all of us.
    Bang!

    good morning!! I bought this kit of stones, 400/1000 and 3000/8000, after watching your video, amazing!! so, as soon as I bought it, I used the 4 stones, because my knives were very bad … now, I just want to do a "maintenance", to keep them with a fine cut (now, they are still good/reasonable, but not as good as on the first days after I sharpened) … in this scenario, which one of the stones do you suggest to use?

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  Před 10 měsíci +2

      so you can use your last 2 finishing stones for maintenance with a strop, your only wanting to do a few passes per side on the 2 stones, if its not able to take care of it then you will need to just restart on your coarse stone. every so often just give a few passes like 5 to 10 easy passes on each side with the highest grit stone in the bundle that will help your edge stay true a strop will also help you can do that ever couple times you use it depending on how hard you used it you dont want to over strop

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I would recommend this, however yes it can work, I personally would go with diamond plates, they do wear out and you have to replace them unless you go with resin bonded diamond which is expensive. However these kind of stones take a lot of maintenance flattening etc. Diamond plates you just use no worries with cleaning, flattening, soaking etc.. and you can always add finer stones that are harder and take less maintenance on top of the diamonds like something from King Stones coupled with some diamond plates, check out my neevesknives store in description it should have some diamond plates I recommend the ultra sharp, or Atoma is even better just depends in your budget, the kings are in there as well

    The 3k and even 8k sound pretty coarse. Maybe it's different in person but comparing the sound to 2k,5k and 8k shapton pro which sound really quiet (especially the 8k) these sound more like the 1k shapton or even a 400 chosera. Maybe it's the binder or maybe the screening process for these isn't as fine as for higher end stones so bigger abrasive ends up making it in (say a 20/14 micron stone can have up to 28 micron size media in better stones but on cheaper ones it might have 40 or even 50 micron depending on the quality of the sorting mesh).
    Still for the price on one good stone you get a whole set and it's an easy way for beginners to try out hand sharpening without spending a bunch of money.

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids Před rokem

      You are not misinterpreting what you see/hear here. The grit on all four of these stones is essentially the same regardless of what is stamped on them. You can get individual stones for less then $10, and that's not a bad deal for what you are getting. You are still only getting one effective grit, though. Paying any more than $10 for a single stone is a waste of money. You can tell how much a person knows about sharpening stones by how they review these stone kits.

    I bought one of those SHIT Amazoom "$35 knife ruining kits"! They aren't worth 35 CENTS!!! I bought some GOOD Japan stones (3) for just over $220. Good sharpening stones aren't cheap; Cheap "dulling stones" aren't GOOD! Good (Japanese made) diamond steels are even more expensive. There is one brand of US made diamond steels that use Chinese synthetic diamonds that are good. That's DMT, but they only go to "2500 grit" and I like to "finish" with a 3 micron stone (or mylar film,) about 3 times smoother.
