I just ordered this set from Amazon as I am in the market for a sharpening system, luckily for me it was on special so even better value for me. I was just looking for something that offered good results at a reasonable price. There are a lot of very similar looking sets on Amazon but under different brand names, it is very hard to know if they are all made by the same manufacturer then rebranded, but after watching a few reviews I was confident this set would do the job for me so went ahead and ordered it. When it has arrived and I have had a chance to try it out I will edit this with my findings of how an amateur fares (not a complete amateur, I did work as a carpenter for several years when I was young and had a lot of experience sharpening chisels and plane blades, just not knives)

@@ppac300 They work fine however the stones are quite soft and my 8000 seems to have some contamination actually in the stone making it not really worth using, however for the price and for someone that only occasionally needs to sharpen they are good value, the issue with the 8000 stone I have not seen anyone else mention so it may have just been a bad batch.

question on knife sharpening, Japanese stones are quite soft in comparison to other stones., Many people only draw blades backwards rather than forward & shaving away the stone surface, or would you only do that on the white stones?
Have you seen sushi knife sharpeners testing sharpness cutting into thumbnail? looks horrendous, surprised they still have nails left!

Yes, it’s a perfect gift. One reason for that is to keep from digging into the stone. It also creates that slight burr and then it removed as you turn the blade over

I think they only do the thumb nail test as a demonstration I doubt they would do that for every knife, but yeah it does make the hair on the back of your neck stand up lol
