    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    If you’ve enjoyed these lessons or videos you are invited to help support ASL University. A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for the ASL University website: Lifeprint.com. There's an easy way you can help out your humble (as well as kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher. Just click on the Paypal (donation) link below and you can be an "above and beyond" ASL Hero!

      Bill Vicars thank you so much for doing this- a suggestion though, on the fingerspelling pictures, it would be super helpful to color code the fingers as it’s extremely hard to tell the difference between s, t, a, n, and m in longer words. Signing Time did this for the same reason. Again, I really appreciate you making these videos.

      I am a teenager learning some beginning ASL over summer break. I am hoping to be able to communicate and carry on a basic conversation with a Deaf person soon. Your teaching style is so helpful and easy to understand. I never thought learning to sign would be so fun, but you make it funny and interesting to learn! Thank you!
      P.S. I get anxiety attacks where I can't speak sometimes, so this will be a helpful skill.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  Před 5 lety +95

      Max! Excellent! Continue to use positive, forward-looking language! Keep phrasing the negative as past tense and the positive as current and future tense: I used to be "X," now I'm "Y."
      Then soon as possible just drop the negative from your story altogether with, "I'm doing pretty good and I'm going to make the future GREAT!" Design your own story and you will eventually become it. Of course there are still highs and lows on the journey but that is part of life eh? Roller coasters are more fun with both highs and lows. If life were all one long high it would actually be boring. The next time you hit a low just think of it as seasoning on your food. Then use that food for fuel to do something cool.
      Again, good job on your forward progress!

    A student named Wendy asks:
    “On this CZcams video (Lesson 04), at minute 15:13 - 15:14, what are you saying? It looks like the right hand is batting down (probably a bigger "No?"), then the thumb hits the chest, and then the hand comes outward in a "Y" hand.”
    Hello Wendy!
    She asks me “Are you happy?”
    I reply to her: No, I'm angry!
    Then I use a "pshaw" / "fooey" / “meh” sign.
    Then I indicate that, "I'm fine now."
    Thus the "Y" hand sign you are seeing is a one-handed version of "NOW."

      there are also apps you can get on your phone where it's sort of a game where you have to figure out what's being signed. You get more points for speed and loose points for having to replay. For anyone who's lost at the beginning, he asks the room "how-you?" and repeats their answer "fine", and signs "good". then he asks his student on screen "how-you?". she answers "fine" and he signs "good".
    he then introduces himself, pointing to his chest then fingerspelling "DR BILL VICARS". then he asks his student "name-you?" she answers by fingerspelling "KATELYN" and he repeats her fingerspelling. They both nod.
    Then he signs "welcome LIFEPRINT". He signs "work", which I take to mean "it works to fingerspell lifeprint", and then shows us the namesign for his website Lifeprint, an L-P shape, several times.
    Finally, he signs "lesson 4".
    I'm still a beginner, please correct me if I am wrong!

    Bill! First, thank you so much for posting all of these easy to understand videos. I'm a soon to be single mom staying up until 3 and 4 in the morning signing along with them so that I may have a new skill I'm interested in working with. Thank you!
    Question: Is there a certain rule about the order of signs? "I before E except after C" makes it less confusing for spelling... anything specific like that saying for signing? I feel like sometimes things are signed a bit backward with "you", "who", "what", etc. at the end and then sometimes they're not. How do we know when to do this?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  Před 8 lety +46

      +Ginger Good
      We sometimes put YOU on the end of sentences to function in a way similar to how the words "do" or "are" function in sentences like "Are you going?" We could sign: YOU GO YOU? -- Which is pretty much a way of saying: "You go, are you?" We just raise our eyebrows while doing that second "YOU" sign.
      We tend to put WH questions at the end of the sentence since "WH" questions require a furrowed brow and it is awkward to try furrowing your brow throughout a long sentence. I've got some grammar articles over at Lifeprint.com in the library section.

    I've learned so much watching your lesson's Dr. Bill keep up the good work. I want to watch all of them, I have a friend who is deaf and she trains in the same Gym I train she is awesome, very patient in helping me to learn, I really want to be fluent in ASL, I love it and each time I learn something I want to learn more and more to the point that sometimes when I am not able to hold a conversation I get so frustrated with myself. My friend told me not to be too hard on myself but I cant help it

    Bill, thank you so much for these videos. Over the past month, I've gained quite the vocabulary by watching on my commute to work. I have a deaf family that comes to my store that's always excited to see me because the don't have to type everything into their phones to communicate. Between your videos and their willingness to teach, i'd say i'll be signing pretty proficiently by the end of the year. Can't wait to watch the next video tomorrow!

    I love this channel and these lessons! I feel happy when I’m watching and understand a joke or playful banter! I’m HoH due to military service and wear HAs.
    The pandemic really sucked for me and I’m sure it was worse for deaf people or those with worse hearing loss than myself. It was also the first time in my life I experienced being 100% incapable of participating in a situation. I’ve never felt so frustrated and upset and it opened my eyes to what many people face on a regular basis.
    The situation that hit me hardest was when we went for COVID testing. It was an old church, very loud and everything echoed. With that, masks and plexiglass I was completely incapable of communicating with the nurse and had to keep looking at my wife to ask “What did she say!?!?”
    I am learning ASL for myself, but also so that perhaps someday I can help someone who is deaf. I’m also learning it because I’ve found myself a newcomer in a beautiful community and culture!

    Thank you so much for these lessons Dr. Bill. I am a nursing student at my local college and though signing is offered at our school it doesn't count towards my degree. I truly have an interest in learning ASL however it is hard and expensive paying for the classes so I was saving ASL for the future. However thanks to these videos I can start learning now. I have been watching 1 lesson a day and truly feel comfortable using these signs and like I'm really learning a third language and culture. Thanks again for these!!!!
