    I was taught to do day with a D, and then the movement you do, is that wrong?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 2 dny

      Using the "D" hand for a sign like "day" is considered (by many) to be more toward "signed English" than "ASL." Let's not think of the "D" hand as being "wrong" but rather it simply is a signed English intrusion. You might even occasionally see Deaf signers use the "D" hand but most of us in everyday life tend to use the index finger for "day." Of possible interest, for the sign "all-day" we use a flat hand and a bit larger movement. You may wish to think of the situation as whether you'd rather have a Deaf (signing) accent or a Hearing signing accent. If you want to sign more like a native / fluent Deaf person, use a '1" hand instead of the "D" hand.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 2 dny

      You point slightly off to your dominant hand side as if the person were there. (Unless someone else really is standing off to your dominant side. In that case, point a bit further to the side of that person so there is no confusion.) This is called "absent referent" in ASL. You might find this page at my website to be of interest: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/indexing.htm

    as an autistic person I found the eyebrow movements kinda confusing and difficult, are there any alternatives or any good ways to practice this?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 5 dny

      You might want to make a list of short sentences that can be answered with a yes or no and practice those sentences with a raise of the eyebrows as you reach the end of the sentence. Then on a different day use a list of short sentences that involve questions with words such as who, what, when, where, why, how, how-much, how-many, how-long ...etc. and practice signing those sentences with the eyebrows down as you reach the end of the sentence. For the first week or two, don't practice the same type of sentence on the same day. That will help prevent you from getting them mixed up. Eventually you will have built up muscle memory. Also after a while you will start noticing the different types of sentences in the instructional videos (and in real life conversations with Deaf people when you start chatting with Deaf).

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 6 dny

      Such a great question! My response is: Maybe! It took a long time for "phone" to change -- and lots of people still do the older (Y-hand) sign for "phone." (But almost no one does the two handed "S" hands sign for phone any more (ha). My guess is that in my lifetime the current "agitator" sign for washer (mechanical washing) will stay in use -- partly because top-loaders are still quite common and in many houses at the moment.

      Oh, is it a form of co-articulation to sign along the boundary of two signs, spatially, to invoke the meaning of both, simultaneously? This happens every once in a while, recently as I signed "cloud", I also signed "condense" at the same time, then, when hands meet, flung its water to the ground, it said exactly what I wanted, inflections are fun~

    Hi Dr. Bill! Would you break down the signs you use at the 9:25 mark? I looked up the sign for "efficient," for example, and the results do not seem to match the sign you make during this part of the video.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 6 dny

      I signed a version of FAST then I signed SKILL. (As in "a more fast and skillful way of signing..." That worked pretty well for that particular context. Another option that would have worked well would be to simply sign SLICK -- which is often used to mean "fluent." The concept of "efficient" has quite a few potential sign interpretations and the right interpretation is going to depend on the situation. You might enjoy some of my notes regarding ways to sign "efficient." See below. ================== efficient: SLICK, slippery, fluent efficient: SMOOTH efficient: NARROW, focused, directed attention, path narrows efficient: STRONG (a general system of meeting locations) efficient: QUICK, instant, immediate, [thumbs pop version of FAST] (A faster process for patient care) efficient: SPECIALIZED, [index finger move forward along top edge of nd-index or flat hand] efficient: FAST [loose hands pulled back into S hands] efficient: TIME, TIME, TIME! (trains take off on time regularly) efficient: SNAP-of-finger-and-thumb, just like that, (visual communication is more efficient you understand in a snap) efficient: EASY (modern tech makes travel more efficient / easy) efficient: FRUGAL (not use many resources or much of a resource) efficient: HARMONY, mesh together well efficient: SKILL, skilled efficient: GAS SAVE-[retain] (fuel efficient) USE LESS-[lesser amount of] gas efficient: SUCCESS (successful: signing is more successful / efficient)

    Hi! I have a question. If I want to sign the word "it" but not referring to a physical thing, (maybe something that has happened, for example something like "make it look like it was an accident") would you just leave out the word 'it', or use a different sign, or point to nowhere in particular? Should I just change the word to the sign for 'that'?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 6 dny

      There are several ways to handle "it." Quite a few people spell it. For example, it is common in the Deaf world to see people spell "Do it!" The spelling mushes together as if you are spelling: DOIT. For something like "make it look like an accident" you could sign: SET-UP LOOK-SAME ACCIDENT. or HAPPEN YOU fs-DO THAT? SHOULD LOOK SAME ACCIDENT!

    listen, out of all the videos that i have watched on teaching me how to learn sign, this is the easiest way to learn it, and i truly think its because i am trying to beat jen to the answer, and there is no sound so it allows me to concentrate on the words and what they mean in sign

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 11 dny

      Interesting that the first word in your comment is "listen." That may indicate that you are (primarily) an auditory learner and that when you are in an auditory (or sound available) environment your use of your ears for learning supersedes all other mental processing. (Which makes it hard to latch onto a visual language). Then you see a silent video and click "off" goes your auditory focus and you instead you switch to visual and kinesthetic learning. You may actually be very strong in all learning modes but it is only in a no-voice or "silent" learning environment that your visual and kinesthetic modes get the chance to shine.

      @@sign-language Haha. Yea. That's interesting how you put that. Thank you for the observation and I can understand what you are saying here. I have ADHD and sometimes focus can be an issue. I know that auditory processing issues can happen and its been a struggle for a lot of my life. The same thing happened in school when i was younger and I can see how that would effect my learning in some areas, especially when I couldn't use music, or noise cancelling headphones to block out the unnecessary noise around me. I have always listened to music as a way to block out noise or people talking. I have never just tried blocking out or having nothing at all because you are right, having any noise when I am trying to focus on something visually is hard to do. Thank you for your insight!

    If a word has a double letter in the word. their is at two ways to finger spell that right? hard to explain it. one version i saw is make that letter and pull to right. hope u know what I mean. Instead of bobbing the letter like tap tap in air.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language Před 17 dny

      Double letters are handled various ways depending on the letter, the position of the letter in the word, what letters are nearby, and sometimes individual signer preferences. I recommend not focusing on list of rules but rather focus on the concepts of efficiency and clarity. Spell the word and feel whether it feels more natural and efficient to reform, bounce, internally tap, slide, or do a combination. Keep in mind that in real life, high speed signing rather often the second letter is simply ... dropped. Ha. The situation (or context) is going to influence your choice as well. If you are spelling a password you are going to do things a bit differently than if you are spelling a commonly referenced item that your conversation partner is familiar with. If you take a formal ASL class and your teacher gives you a list of "rules" -- nod your head enthusiastically while smiling appreciatively and do your best to follow them -- but realize that out in the real world you are going to see a lot of variety. ============== How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1.
