- Join me, FantasticMrSam and together we'll try and definitively answer* the question that ones of people across the internet have been pondering for, oh, several months at least; is DSP a content creator?
So, I've managed to make a video similar in length to the last one in just over half the time. Having a finished script before you start filming works wonders! Who knew? Turns out that the main trouble I had this time stemmed from an unlikely source: DSP himself. As I was editing a video based primarily on the fact that Phil never changes his content, he...changed his content. Admittedly only in a few small ways (it is DarksydePhil we're talking about after all), but enough to cause me to have to re-think, re-edit and re-shoot. Hey ho!
Although I feel like I could've happily continued to mess around with the editing for at least another 2 months, rendering the final version on 31st December 2021 seems like as good a time as any to get this out into the world. I wonder where the next video will take me. Saying that, it'll be interesting to see where 2022 takes us all.

Yeah this is the best descriptor. He makes the piss poor videos, begs for money, explodes on stream and bans people or gets his ass kicked by gojitenks, then detractors take it and make legitimately fun videos for mouth drooling morahns like us to watch. Sound good?
Shinko means that Phil's videos are too boring and low-effort to be considered content, but he inspires others to make actually entertaining videos dunking on him. I'd maybe call him a content ingredient.
Another point- DSP only lets chat talk about him (positive things only) or the game he’s currently playing. And if they don’t speak to him he throws a tantrum.
And then any time someone tips with a question, he gives a generic: "I don't know how to answer that! What a stupid question!"

DSP: Uhhh why are guys talking about Gordon Ramsay. This is a gameplay stream.
Also DSP: What did Kat make for dinner? Uhhh she made Cajun chicken curry with carrots and beats and also Mac and cheese. It was sooooo good like blaghhghhahgahahah.
And sometimes he’ll even get mad at chat for talking and say “I’m trying to play a game and you guys are distracting me.”

DSP now calls his pre-streams 'podcasts' just to deflect criticism about how long and tedious they are. Literally all he did was change the name. Tells you everything you need to know about his commitment to entertaining his audience.
Yeah that’s kind of the baffling part. No one was complaining be it was called a pre stream they were complaining because it was long boring and needless. Changing the name does nothing.
Any of the "pahsitive changes" he's made to his schtreems in the last 5+ years have amounted to nothing more than changing the shade of lipstick on the pig(roach).
He’s still technically right. ANYTHING can be a podcast if you’re just talking and recording it. The only difference is, nobody tunes in for his, so it’s not a podcast.
The really stupid thing was calling his stream a pre-stream.
And the podcast is also a stream! So a pre-stream podcast is equally stupid.

It was 20. If he did any work at all, it was while leaning very slightly against a wall. There's no way a sedentary guy like that can just get on the floor and do 20 decent pushups that fast without busting a lung or .. at all. It was amazing that he chose such a hill to die on, insisting indignantly later that he'd done it despite noone believing he was capable of it.

What's amazing about DSP is that he *does* end up spawning actual content creators who are really freaking good. Your vids? Fantastic and informative. Other folks like Steve of the Dead and Brittany Gates have excellent insight. Every "detractor" brings something different to the table.

DSP counts you as detractor now, even you do a good content (like this vid) for fixing problem.
DSP is for the most part a "Content Maker", not a "Content Creator".
"Make" and "Create" are often used interchangeably but actually mean two different things. To "make" something means you're using a standard production process for a design that already exists, but to "create" something means you're innovating to produce something new. How do we differentiate between the two in-practice? Well, you'd have to weigh up the difference between the inputs and outputs, accounting for both the degree of processing that went on during production and the relative uniqueness of the end product.
There's a clear line between maker and creator when it comes to people who play video games, especially when you're producing "raw gameplay" like DSP with minimal editing to the content. Video games generally have finite outputs from the inputs, and there are only so many possible endings, action loops and so on. There are of course exceptions like Minecraft whereby players can be extremely creative by doing things that haven't been done before and which can't be easily replicated, however the overall point still stands.
If you're simply recording yourself with minimal editing playing a video game then we can safely determine that the degree of processing is very low. This then leaves us with the relative uniqueness of the end product-does the fact that it's DSP playing it rather than anyone else make it unique enough? This is where it all becomes a bit subjective. My opinion is that given most of the audience draw is for the actual game content itself that DSP had no hand in creating (DSP even admits that views and "donations" vary wildly between titles), his product doesn't meet the uniqueness test. He also isn't doing content like Minecraft grand design videos where his end-product is highly-differentiated from other players. That being said, his Vlogs and feasting videos do meet the bar of being unique content creation given they're product offerings where the main draw is DSP himself.
This is just the opinion of an engineer. A lawyer would assess the question from the narrow confines of copyright law-it's a grey area but DSP is still on very shaky ground given companies like Nintendo have shown they can strike down content at will should they choose to do so. Just because they mostly choose not to for marketing purposes doesn't mean the product is considered transformative enough to meet the bar of being unique content creation!

I’m very, very critical when it comes to “new” (new to me at least) content creators covering Phil. It’s very rare that I’m sold after a single video. However, this video was incredibly well done. Not just the A+ “lore” surrounding DSP both past & present but your style and writing.
The fact that he’s recording YT videos in front of a chat room and calling it a livestream isn’t mentioned much but it really is just so bizarre.

About him flip flopping between distancing himself from CZcams to his recent push to be a CZcamsr:
Well first it's pretty funny. A few years ago on Twitch, DSP had a very "interactive" video where he literally said that the CZcams audience had to "STEP UP" and start sending him tips because them watching the video is no longer good enough. He then threatened his CZcams audience that if they didn't send him money he would stop uploading to CZcams all together (despite the fact he doesn't do anything to the videos, they're already cut up)
But now that he's on CZcams, he's realized that he has to build up his CZcams channel after years of actively helping it decay, and he's completely deluded himself over the last few weeks.
He's been begging people to click the like button. Over the last two weeks, two (2) people have come into chat saying "I used to watch you a long time ago and this stream popped up when I searched for RE4!"
Now DSP thinks that his CZcams channel is exploding and being shown to people!
The problem... He has a 24 hour sub mode to chat. So if anyone joined and said that... they found his channel BECAUSE THEY WERE ALREADY SUBBED LMAO. Everything he's been saying is factually wrong!
So now he thinks that everything he's doing is working, and his streams are going to be shown to everyone soon if he keeps this up.

This is the definition of quality over quantity. Stellar storytelling and pacing aside, So many small things and quick cuts that just raise the quality of the video. Each vid seems to have that little bit of extra flair to push it past the last.

DSP content is the same way my sex life works. There's lots of crying, begging and snorting. Everyone tells you you're terrible at it but you yourself are sure it's someone elses fault and you're gonna need at least a 2 hour break before trying again.

DSP is a content creator. Just like my nephew, my mum and my dead gran is a content creator. We live in the age of content creation. Whether that be instagram photos, tiktok shorts or facebook posts - we're creating billions of pieces of content daily. The question is: what of this content is "quality" and worth watching - if any at all.
For me the funniest part is at the end of the stream when he says ''alright guys i will upload this straight to dspgaming'' Idk why but its really funny to me.
When he does this, he’s also removing the original views and likes. I’m certainly no expert on how CZcams works, but I imagine that doing this isn’t going to please the algorithm.

The camera thing is so minor but it's such a solid point because it does make it feel like the streamer is actually looking at the game.
Also your edits are top tier homie. Keep up these tutorial like videos. Helps me find out what i should be on the lookout for incase i one day wanna stream.

I dig your dislike of the term "content". Back in the mid-90s when I was working in "digital media" -- a fancy term for online newspaper -- my boss called what we did "content" and I immediately recoiled at the word. No man, I write news stories -- or whatever you want to call them -- and it takes work and it's not *content*.
Decades later now that I make videos for CZcams I still hate referring to them as "content" and myself as a "content creator".

You know I really love your dsp videos, I can tell you have a whole team of editors. One thing I learned from dsp is, one man can NOT create videos and edit them 😂. Good stuff keep it coming please

"Content creator" simply defines those who upload ideos on yt, stream on twitch, write medium blogs or even posts pics on IG on the premise of that being part of their public persona. So yes he does make content like everyone else on the site and streams for money like everyone else on a streaming platform who aims at being a professional streamer.
The real question should be, does he nail the basics of streaming? The answer ofc is *no* and it has nothing to do with his trash webcam, his breaks ( _I would argue_ that 5 hours of uninterrupted streams can't be good for anyone) or not knowing how OBS works. It's not about that: the moment money shapes your content and your interactions with your audience (if you have your viewers be explicit part of your yt analytics page, openly shift the blame of anything money related onto your audience and/or artificially stretch the pacing of your playthroughs for those tips goal -- see Resident Evil Village ) that's when you become a bad content creator.

@@FantasticMrSam I tell people all the time when the topic of DSP comes up. I always say 'Ugh I hate him.' and they always ask 'Then why do you watch him?' And technically I don't. I just watch videos *about* him. But I'm just fascinated. It's like a train wreck or a car accident. Once you see it happening, it's just so hard to look away.
I just can't believe there exists a person like him. It's almost unreal. He'll sit there and talk about how 'Oh my god! This is the most viewers and likes I've ever gotten on a stream!' then immediately go into 'But I don't know what's happening, support is just really bad right now...'
Views and likes, and even dislikes are interaction. Those are support. I *hate* him calling out the ways to give him money as the only way to support him, because that's not how it works.

"How To Fix A DSP Stream"
Step 1. Get a new streamer that has a somewhat pleasant demeanor...
Step 2. Stop seeing your viewers as employees. The daily wraps and pre-stream 'podcasts' feel like emergency work meetings.

I’m on my 3rd watch, the editing is superior, those time cuts/edits are superb. I love the Paul(Beatles)/Phil telling the same story over & over again.. such a genius edit. I know it’s a tedious, and time consuming process- but, it’s valued, and raises the stock of these videos.
We need to get you to 1K subs immediately.
You, and Secret Limited, are amazing with the clean, quality, and professional edits.. Ludwig, and Mighty D(etractor) are phenomenal too. Love seeing polished editing, it’s inspiring, because I, too, do a lot of editing- but, I’m suffering burnout from it all.. any advice for editors like myself that helps you continue forth?
Thanks so much for the kind words. It takes so long to make one of these so it really is motivating to get a comment like this.
Honestly, it’d be hard for me to give advice on burnout as I’m relatively new to the game. I’m still feeling hungry and if anything I wish I had more time to commit to all of this! Although, I did get burnt out on streaming a while back. As I’ve suggested in these videos, I didn’t find it all that creatively satisfying and after a stream I’d be wishing I’d spent my time doing other things. All I could suggest is maybe try to take your mind elsewhere. I sometimes find that watching something completely random on CZcams about a topic that I don’t know about can help me and can occasionally give me inspiration that I wasn’t consciously looking for.

The CZcams on the fly editing/unrecorded segments make even less sense now that he's streaming on CZcams since he only has one audience on one platform now
Oh I know. It drives me crazy thinking about it. People like Meerkat Ink are killing it showing that you can make great content out of a live stream. A nice thumbnail and splitting your stream up into chapters goes a long way.

Phil is THE only person I've seen who makes streaming feel like a Dead End job he wants to clock out early from, it makes me want to quit my own job

Personally, I think Phil suffers from some kind of weird generational disassociation of sorts, either as a front for laziness, or as a genuine hurdle for him to EVER compete in this "job" on this platform. What I mean by that is, that he seems to bring the mindset of a TV presenter from ye olden days to YT/Twitch. In a way it is like watching your *grandparent* (or similar) trying to stream. Of course they wouldn't have the time and perhaps the necessary skills (not trying to shoehole everyones grandparents here, just saying) to develop a cool pause screen that changes and is interactive. How would they fix that? Fan contributions of course, cause that equates (in such a viewpoint) to interactivity and also reduction in workload, as well as in "know how".
Phil however, aging badly however he may be, IS NOT said grandparent, which makes his lacking content just THAT much more apparent.
It's like watching a **relic from a bygone era**, which never was. In TV (DECADES back at least), it is important to reiterate ones name and segmenting your "contant" into easily recognizeable and repeatable segments... CAUSE IT'S TV. DSP is desperately trying to force the proverbial "blocky shape into the round hole", for YEARS at this point and it only gets more pathetic as he tries further and further. Just my two cents.

I've been saying the following for *yonks* : he doesn't create content, or at least not anymore. He just uses videos as a store-front for his begging. Once you walk into the store, you realise that the store isn't there at all for the purposes that you entered it for.
Also, I love the edits you made, especially the ones that focus on repetition. Like damn, Phil's basically an on-rails shooter at this point.

Changes with Phil occur at a glacial pace, and only after 99% of everyone else has adopted them years ago. Everything else is minor variations of the same gimmicks: vest goal, hat goal, glasses goal, vote for the game to play that he will override anyway goal, the feasting he will do on a holiday anyway goal, etc.
Absolutely 100% DSP is a content creator when you consider begging on stream a content.
