  • Hey! Trying to get back into the recording groove! Got some new gear(basses, preamps, pedals) and had some time today to work out some stuff.
    This track is one of the reasons that A) I play bass and 2) That I'm back(sorta') playing the basses that I'm playing.
    If you ask me "What's the best band that came out of Seattle?", MY answer is, and will be, Queensrÿche(not saying they're my FAVORITE Seattle band, THAT distinction belongs to Alice In Chains)! In terms of musicianship, songwriting, and everything that goes with being a great band, Queensrÿche is one of the best that's ever been! They really flowed naturally from Prog-type metal to super melodic ballad-y and back and still always sounded...right.
    Eddie Jackson is one of those players that isn't super flashy, but this band would sound vastly different if someone else was playing bass. His technique and, more importantly, his TONE launched a truckload of bassists, myself included, down the path to that beautifully raspy "Spector Growl". The sound of his Spector NS-2 is so distinct and rich, that you probably couldn't get that tone with any other bass. A lot of players say that his tone was "better" on Mindcrime, and while I don't disagree with that, this song is what got me into Queensrÿche, Eddie Jackson, and to a large degree, Spector basses!
    I usually try to come up with some fun facts about the covers I do. Other than the fact that this song is 2nd most played song on their setlist, there's not much to find. The basic message of the song is still very relevant, but the details are pretty dated. I love this song nonetheless...:-)
    Signal chain is Spector NS-2~ Audality M1 wireless~ Darkglass B7K~ Empress Bass Compressor~ Noble Tube Preamp~ Zoom H6~ Canon 80D
    Queensrÿche-Empire
    All rights belong to Queensrÿche
    Stay healthy, stay happy, be good to each other...

      I love Eddie's bass choices, and, yeah, I don't think he gets the attention he deserves for his bass lines paired with Scott's phenomenal drumming. The Empire album seemed to be mixed with a little more emphasis on the bass. A really great counterpoint to the clean, beautiful guitar tones. What an all around perfect band!

Comparing signal chains, I go -> JHS Little Black Buffer -> Peterson StroboStomp -> Crybaby -> Darkglass Hyper Luminal comp -> Darkglass Alpha Omicron -> JHS buffer #2 -> SansAmp BassDriver DI v2 -> split to DAW & amp. Simple, clean, and ridiculously amazing tone. Love Spector & Darkglass.

      I just picked up playing bass a couple years ago and now starting to get into pedals. Been using this vid as a play along to learn the song, and trying to get close to that tone as I can. Seems I can get close to the high end but lose the low end so might add a compressor. I'm running an Ibanez SR300 ->Boss BB1X->Darkglass Microtubes X->Orange Crush 50 combo amp followed by 3 shots of whiskey. Really appreciate the vid and all the info, so much to learn but so much fun fiddling around trying different things!

    • @mishterpreshident
      @mishterpreshident Před 2 lety

      @@pbass6811 Thanks! That signal chain IS amazing. Picked up many tips from watching YT vids on how to build pedal rigs, and have concluded that the 2x buffers really do make a monstrous difference in tone. In my opinion, the SansAmp pre-amp sounds better than my bass combo amp's pre (a Peavey Max 300), so I bypass it entirely by going straight from SansAmp to the bass amp's effects return. BTW, it was a REALLY close tie between the Spector I chose, and a Dingwall NG5.

    • @mishterpreshident
      @mishterpreshident Před 2 lety

      @@zingdog33 I'm no expert, but if you are losing frequencies in your signal chain, you might wanna look at getting 2 buffers, one for the very beginning of the chain, and another at the end. I thought, with my short cables and simple chain, there was no way I needed them, but after I put them on my chain, the difference in tone was extremely noticeable. I went with JHS Little Black Buffers, but there are several other good ones. The YT channel "Vertex Effects" (aka The Rig Doctor) has a lot of good info on buffers and how to fix your tone issues.

      @@mishterpreshident Thanks man! I'll check that out. The X is supposed to keep your low clean and distort the high. Using a pick makes a big difference but I want to try to nail it with fingers just to see if I can. I swapped the position of the pedals and there was a huge change, the BBX lit up and the Darkglass went to 11. Can get a lot of really cool range out of these just trying to emulate something specific is a bit trickier. Thanks again!!

    Do " Della brown" from that album. Do "take hold of the flame " from the "warning " album from 1984. You got such a "feel" about your playing and this is coming from a Rush / Geddy Lee influenced bassist...I might as well say it, lol; bassist/guitarist, drummer and keyboard/synth Rush influenced player. I absolutely loved this performance. If you ever wanna go out and I mean WAYYY out on a limb, learn "free will " by Rush.

I did the video, then I changed a couple of things on my board, and now I don't have a lot of that stuff anymore. Sorry. I can tell you that having multiple preamps is pretty common. The main thing is using ONE for your main tone shaping. Since Spectors have a two band EQ, and the Noble is also a two band EQ, I got the drive from the B7k and I got some upper mid EQ from the B7k. When it comes to EJ's tone, 90% of it came from his HAZ-equipped NS-2, the rest came from his rig, I have the bass, don't have the rig, had to improvise, LOL! Cheers!

    Awesome video, although the claim that you can’t get the tone without a Spector is false. In fact if you look and mindcrime live footage from late 1988, you can see that he was using a Kramer with a pointy headstock for “I don’t believe in love” and it still sounds like the album. So I suppose any EMG loaded P/PJ bass will get you close

      @pbass6811  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it! You are 100% right about EJ playing a Kramer during the Mindcrime era. Not sure if you're aware that during that period(1986ish-1990), Kramer owned Spector Basses. There's probably a pretty good chance that any Kramer EJ played actually had Spector guts, which would mostly be the HAZ preamp, which, I think, was exclusive to Spector basses(i.e. Kramer). I agree with ya', I think almost any EMG P/J bass'll get you most of the way there. EJ obviously sounding pretty killer with the Lull basses he's been using(RIP Mike Lull). Cheers!
