    In this video we’ll take a look at my choices for the best budget Ham HTs for 2023. I’ve included 10 budget HTs and mention 3 that didn’t make the list and why. Spoiler alert: It’s for spurious emissions.

    Baofeng has changed the board on their flagship radio, the UV-5R. The newest radios shipping are testing with good spectral purity. Looks like they’ve added some additional filtering in addition to changing the chip on the board to version 4.1 which was released in June of 2022..

      If true, that's great. I haven't seen any recent reviews with clean signals. I along with other ham CZcamsrs have been offering feedback on this issue. With cheap signal analyzers, you can't hide bad performance. Thanks for the input, I'll be on the lookout. Cheers.

    Thank you so much for your videos. Are there any 8w up-5r models that are clean? Looking for 8w clean signal in that form factor. Thanks!

    I sent my UV17R back, would not consistently connect to CPS. The UV-21R is by far the more superior radio in feel and performance.

    Hi i received a set of UV-21 Pro V2 2 weeks ago. Seems like a nice radio overall. 1.8AH battery with USB C port on the battery. Has the screen with black background but dimm unfortunately and no settings to increase brightness. 999 channels. Use T6UV software. Not sure about transmit power & signal purity.

    Now I'm confused. UV21, UV17 or UV5RH/BF5RHM. Which one would you choose?

    Please note: The fundamental *IS* the first harmonic. And a reminder, as hams we are legally responsible for ensuring all our transmitters meet the FCC spectral purity specifications, whether we buy them or design and build our own. I have a couple of cheap HT's, but before I put them on the air I tested their outputs for spectral purity even though the CZcams reviews said that particular model met the requirements, because it isn't about the model. It's about each radio. It's also a good idea to double check each of your radio's harmonics on a regular basis, because things happen. A bad solder joint on a low-pass filter inductor or capacitor and the rigs will spew illegal spurs. Too many hams think that because they bought their rig as a commercial appliance instead of building it that they aren't personally for their rigs output at all times. They are.

    I like the often unmentioned tendency of putting the speaker behind the keypad, which ( I think) is a Baofeng 17 first. It gives more room for a bigger more useable keypad.
    My favourite budget radio is still the 17R pro, with GPS.

    I was going to get a Uv-5r but I see the BF-f8hp is an upgrade from the uv-5r. Do you recommend the bf-f8hp?
    I'm looking for a good Ham radio for a shtf situation to where I can listen to important broadcasts and information

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 6 měsíci

      Let me offer a couple of other choices. I have the F8HP, and it's getting a little dated. If SHTF is important to you, BetterSafeRadio has some Wouxun KG UV9 series radios preloaded with a bunch of SHTF channels. Buytwowayradios has similar models without the preprogrammed channels. Wouxun radios have a good reputation and are a step up from Baofeng. They are more expensive. I did a review of the KG UV9 Mate on the channel. An inexpensive choice might be the Baofeng UV 21R on Amazon. It has more channels than the F8HP, FM broadcast reception, NOAA weather channels, and is USB C rechargeable. Did a review on that recently, too. 73

    How can I tell the difference between the tidradio h8 for ham 1st and 2nd generation when I unpack the box? Hoping to get 2nd gen.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 5 měsíci +1

      As I recall, the 1st Gen didn't include a USB-C chargeable battery. Otherwise, I think you'll have to trust the product description.

    Hello, i randomly discovered this hobby and im gonna give exams next month here in Greece. I was in a search for my first ham radio and with all the research i found GT-5R and UV-K5. I just wondering for the UV-K5 that has many features, but i dont know and i cant find a video that that comparing GT-5R vs UV-K5 for:
    a)SAR levels
    b)Harmonics
    c)How clean is signal
    d)And because UV-K5 is so hackable if there will be any issue in Europe
    73 (haha, getting to the game)

      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 7 měsíci

      Both the GT 5R and K5 are OK choices for the new ham. The GT 5R has a cleaner signal. Retevis RA 89 is a bit more expensive, but also a good choice for a first radio. I have reviews on all three on the Gadget Talk channel. My choice in order would be RA89, GT 5R then K5.
