I have no idea why this band was not much bigger than it was.
They have got one of the all-time greatest drummers of in rock and roll of all times.
One of the most unique singers of all time. Some outstanding guitar players and some really unique rock and roll songs.
I just don't understand why they weren't bigger

Listen to the songs that were actually hits. Jim Dandy to the rescue, Uncle Elijah. Jim didn't sing like he is here. I don't know what to think of the new crooner dandy. Certainly not as unique. He's just trying to please the record company I guess. It didn't work. They dropped them anyway.

Because after a very short period - post "Jim Dandy To The Rescue" - they just seemed kinda silly. The strutting, the eyes, the exaggerated vocal mannerisms quickly became self-parody

@@greg7656yeah, his strength was his voice. His weakness was not having anything to do between his lyrics. He was like a fly buzzing around the guitar players. I never understood why he didn't turn his attention to the audience. He did sometimes, but not enough. But I liked him and he was a big part of Black Oak. 🤘✌️

In 1971 I was a student at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville majoring in Mass Communications. This involved radio, film, and for me, a strong interest in television production. Our department created a cool deal with a TV station in St. Louis. We produced a weekly 30 minute music show at our studio featuring local St. Louis area talent. The show aired on Saturday nights. We got credit for it and had fun taping it each week. And amazingly, one week our department head somehow got Black Oak Arkansas to come over to SIUE and tape a 30 minute show with us. They had just finished appearing in St. Louis. They were just starting to get some real national attention, so it was really cool that they agreed to do this. A funny story about that day. . .I ran one of the studio cameras during the show, and at one point there was a break in the taping. While we sitting around in the studio one of the guitar players came over to me and said, "Hey man, how do you work this camera? Can you show me how to run this thing?" He was pointing at my studio camera. So, after showing him the basics of running it, he grabbed the camera and started zooming all over the studio. He suddenly stopped, looked over at me and said, "Hey, this is fun. Know what? I want to run this camera. Think I can run it on the next song?" I said, "Sure, that's OK with me, but. . .Who's gonna play bass?" He thought for a moment, then turned to me with a big smile and said, "Hey man, can YOU play guitar?" I laughed and said, "No, but I sure wish I could. And anyway, I don't think Jim Dandy would be happy seeing me playing bass." "No, I guess not," he said. "Well, thanks for lettin' me play with it. Now, you get some good shots of me on the next song, man." I said, "Oh, don't worry about that. I've got ya covered." He laughed and went back over to the set. True story. They were cool guys. They treated us like we were pros, not just college students. Great memories from so long ago!

My neighbor across the street and I used to jam in his basement (me on guitar, him on drums). He was originally from Sulligent AL and his next door neighbor there was the bus driver for BOA. He had photos of his mom sitting on Jim Dandy's lap in their kitchen and Jim had his two (false) front teeth out. they were kick ass high energy rock, a bit of country in their older stuff but it's always there when they want it. they do have country roots. they were at their height here. I saw them in 73. They had 3 albums i think. There some serious rock and roll on all of them but certainly innovators of southern rock and your right this first song is showing how much they progressed as musicians. Well polished for sure. they all lived together on a farm and all they did was play music together and fuck off. I did that with a band for a year. The lead singer, guitarist and songwriters parents had a cabin at the lake. It was about 100 miles from where we actually lived. We would just load the equipment in a UHaul and go disappear for months. Party, fish, play music all the time when we were in the cabin .Everything was set up all the time to jam. We were very good. think about it. that last song was like something Elvis would do with with screaming guitars and jammed out.

And for all the David Lee Roth haters, Jim gives all credit to his showmanship to Little Richard, James Brown and the Killer Jerry Lee Lewis during the mid- 50's.. Mangrum stated he was like the Ring Master of a three ring circus moving about the stage highlighting each of the bands players contributions and rifts. He understood the competition and the need to have a stick or gimmick to set BOA out from the multiple Southern Rock groups of the early seventies. It obviously was successful. Their fans then as now show up to see him and the band, though the original guitarist have passed. Nothing succeeds like success!

Just offhand I’d say the concert show by BOA was recorded in 1977. Their album “Race With The Devil” was issued by Capricorn Records that same year, and their name was shortened to Black Oak in order to get that mainstream appeal. The band followed up with “I’d Rather Be Sailing” in 1978, and Capricorn Records folded shortly afterwards. Black Oak Arkansas is still making music today.

A very talented group of musicians from Arkansas, Tommy Aldridge left to join Black Sabbath as their drummer, he’s fantastic.
