Making Music With My Own Samples.. So Sick!

- Let's create a track with NO SAMPLES other than the ones I make on the spot, and then resample them. I find this to be a fun approach to making music, as well as an effective way to camouflage my mediocre piano skills, haha! I can play chords I like at any tempo and then slice and chop them up on the Octatrack. Next to getting some organic tones from the Nord 6D, I wanted to layer them with the rigid, robotic, digital sounds from my minimal Eurorack setup. I used Osiris as my voice of choice, and the Maestro to modulate the wavetable, resulting in some intriguing textures.

Love the video man. Thanks for the shout out!
The Bob Ross of dawless house music :p
Sound a like 😊
what if more musicians cultivated this skill of sharing how their musicianship works, how much more talent would be fostered, how many more musicians there would be. knowledge is power this is true but not keeping it to yourself is love, dude, thanks 👌
JonWayne ❤! This dude is soo talented.
Been watching this channel since your first compact creation. It’s been dope to see your skills and confidence with the keys improve so much. Great vibes and tunes as always!
“Welcome to sessions with you, where you are in session with me. My name is…Ricky”
Good stuff yo. It’s fun watching music ideation like this.
hahahaha! yes!
Also, the reason why there can be a bit of a grind in the melody is because the G min chord is a G minor 9, which means it's either from the key of F or the key of Bb. The A minor chord either comes from the key of C or G, which has a B natural in it. So if the chord playing is the Aminor9 the way you played it with the B natural in the middle of the voicing, then using a Bb like from the G minor chord preceding it conflicts melodically/harmonically. So it's possible to play that B natural during the A minor and it sounds really cool because of the contrast with the G minor and D minor chords.
The D minor is flexible. Either B or Bb would technically work, but both are a 6th degree from D so they're both really strong intervals.
Your best of 2023, so far. it sounds great!
"Whoa, I sound like Beethoven in there!" Love it!
Nice session, always cool to see other people's workflows!
You played accidentally the B natural in stead of A sharp( as you're evolving in G minor) That's why it sounds bizarre 🤭! I love your sampling recipes to build tracks ❤️lot of gratitude for your sharing
It actually didn't sound bad tho! Bit of modal interchange that's all
Sick watching u evolve
Them piano lessons paying off bro!!
Great stuff again ! Love you improvisations! Grooves!
I love this technique. Also digging the way Jon has been doing it lately.
I'm always impressed by your sheer skill, love watching this type of videos from you.
Amaizing!!!! 😍😍😍 you are so inspiring 😍
Love this! Awesome as always. THanks man!
Gorgeous creation Bro!.. long time follower. You really inspire! 🙏
Love jon makes beats!
Yeah man! This is sooo dope. There are few things I enjoy in modern electronic music as much as someone sampling their own instrumentation and taking it somewhere different.
Awesome to see your progress on the keys man! Keep it up!
Absolutely superb!
Dude. So much fun. Keep on going! Those piano lessons are showing up now!
Yeah been watching Jon makes beats a lot. Gotta wait until Christmas to get a sampler, the blackbox. Then I will try this exact thing. Love your sound!
Have you ever shared the drum samples you use on the digitakt? Sounds like straight 909s, but so good!
maybe the coolest track youve ever done a video for, i love the stacks of piano loops
nce one ricky, it's always super satisfying making your own samples!
You're playing jazz voicings, man! Awesome! The piano lessons are catching up :-)
this might be my favourite video of yours. tyy
Every single one of your videos are absolute perfection.
I haven't seen one of your vids in a awhile. You're really coming along with piano!
Damn, your piano skills getting better and better!
I sort of stumbled upon the the idea of creating original tracks to serve as base to create samples from ac outlet of months ago on the channel of Alex Ball. It made sense to me instantly on many levels, and so I find it fascinating to run into another take on that subject (sort of) over here. Which is nice - and highly appreciated! :-)
The more piano you learn, the more you are slowly going to transform into a live looper lol
Loving all your "house track rom scratch" content mate. I hope you get Dirtywave M8 a try someday. I'm coming from the Elektron ecosystem and I was surprised to see that it's the perfect "house device" for me, hence it's my "main gear" now (that I can literally take anywhere). For the past couple on months, I usually compose on M8, and eventually I'll be using Octatrack & Analog Heat+FX to "perform a live set", as sort of a "more fun" way to DJ with a easy to carry, minimal setup.
So good Ricky!
your enthusiasm when recording the nord into OT was so dope - "yo it's supposed to be... harder than this!" fr I have had that feeling myself when slicing up recordings on my DT (I'm new to this and don't own an OT). Thanks for sharing your vibe with us!
Gettin pretty good on them keys ricky keep up the practicing its paying off!
Fantastic 💯
You da man Ricky. You helped kickstart my dawless journey
lovely!
It’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content.
I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak.
I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds.
When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap.
I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power.
In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with.
What would be your suggestion?
Thank you!
damn, the fader was really sick !!
15:59 It seems that the chords that you use are from the d minor scale. The first time you played the melody that sounded "wrong", you played the B, which is not part of the D minor scale. The second time you automatically corrected yourself to playing Bd!
But when you play the A chord, you can play the B to extend the chord (as you did when recording the chords), because the B is harmonically supported by the other notes from the chord.
But what also could be the case, is that after the chopping and sampling and everything, maybe this part of the song is leaning on the g minor sound, which is part of the d minor scale. And if you play a B at that point, you create a g major sound, which clashes with the g minor!
Still trying to wrap my head around these things! Thank you for sharing this session of trial, error, and creation ❤
MC202 IN THE HOUSE!❤
Put that 2oh2 in and bass out.
Bro. Herbie Hancock vibes on that Nord Electro! Nice!
u make me want to get into eurorack with this mini system of yours 😭
Be careful 😂
I sometimes re-watch some of your older videos, and it is just amazing to see how far you've come. Definitely inspiring.
I don't have all of the tools you have, but it's really inspiring how you've gone from that first Compact Creation with the Drumbrute and the Monostation (where the Monostation was barely audible due to mixing issues, remember?) to this jazz workout.
Love!
haha! Yo thanks for sticking with me that long, that's so awesome to hear about. I STILL have that mono station.. there is something weird and special about it I feel haha. I DO remember that video.. 🤦🏽♂
Great work, I always look fwd to your videos as I always catch some new little trick.
A bit of a fun fact - I know you said you saw this from the maestro Jon Wayne (a big fan), but this technique is quite old - I saw it in a old Miles Davis documentary. He was the pioneer ofcit, with his batch of electric releases, and he done it in a way to sample everyone jamming on their instrument for 30 mins, and later on cut the tapes of each instrument into small portions and re-arrange it to a 5 min track!
I love using it with looper on Isla S2400 and later sequence via Digitakt Midi :)
Thanks for sharing!
this is the way. I stopped chasing sample libraries because sampling my own stuff is just a lot of fun for me. I didn't buy my S2400 to load up sample libraries :D
Ricky T, the master at work, makes a banger in 4 minutes no stress
This beat is 🔥
Tune! 🔥 Man this got some Lil Louis vibes for sure
Even before you said it I was like “Hey those piano lessons are _doing it_.”
Only Ricky could record arbitrary un-quantized chords, create 16 even slices, and roll 7's for the rest of the video. Amazing job!
HAHAHA!
well that was fast! 😂 well done sir ^^
I can see that you and lil' red are becoming fast friends. Sounds great.
My #1 fav feature of Ableton 11 is the Midi buffer. So you never miss those nice phrases when you forgot to push record !
Duuuuuuuude!!!!!!! You are a Bad Ass MotherTrucker!!!! I love what you do😎!!!!
Yo! Missing the fresh brewed coffee 🙂
Yes, bring it back!
I still have a Pavlovian response when I watch this channel. Coffee forever.
When are you releasing the “I sound like Beethoven up in here” hat?
Jon was a beast way before his CZcams channel
Great 🔥 i have this Geology 12“ dope record 🤙🏼
so cool and not easy
Any plans to cover the Pianophonic module? Would be interested to see your coverage!
Yo Ricky, this was absolutely sick! As a learner of classical piano, I really need to learn these jazz chords. BTW, where are you launching these new tracks pf yours?
i been digging your work with the digitakt, but is the slicey dicey youre doing here only available with the octo? or can you do a bit of this on the digitakt as well?
That’s a nice track, been checking Jon makes beats and definitely thinking of getting an octatrack, will probably wait till they revise it?
The OT is amazing as is. You won’t be disappointed.
OT been around for 10+ years, you'll be waiting around another 10 for a MK3 version.
This is good Ricky
Thanks Peter!
crazy
let's go
This is why you eat your daily music theory kids...
Sample chopping your own melody helps a lot. I just go hip to Jon make beats about a week ago if that. He’s sick, you guys make me want the octatrak more. So with a DT and a OT you can have them linked and record independently? Can I do that with a DT and a Live2? And will the midi control devices under the DT and OT act independent like the recording process? If the live 2 can’t work with the DT like that I might have to get that damn OT.
Nice video, do you do your final mix in OT? :)
🎉🎉🎉
Your jazzish sound is a lot like mine. I’ve always wondered what you do them? I use mine as styles on my PSR S770 and sometimes I change them sometimes I don’t, I usually change from jamming with them, I’ll think this would have been a cooler rhythm. Peace
Where did you get those coloured cables from?! That would make life sooooo much easier.
ricky tinez
👑
Fredagain vibes
are these the tma-2 on your head? best purchase ive made in a while.
You are playing actually Bar Chords: they are not G-, A-, D- but they actually are Bb maj7/G, C maj7/A, F maj7/D.
I would approach the composition thinking about the upper chord and not minding much the bass.
Do I see an MC-202 in the background? is that new (to you?)?
Isn’t this still *technically* a digital audio workstation?
you're impossible not to like
Why is it that as soon as the red light isn't on we're suddenly able to shit gold?
How come that you use the Digitakt for drums, and not the Syntakt??
Maybe I missed it but is there a Ricky tinez drum samples?
I thnk those drums are samples too...
Dude what are those wireless headphones you’re using? How’s the latency?
Quite rite to. Look how much it cost ???! U crazy
Hi, just out of curiosity, but what’s the reason you turned away from the Akai MPC’s? I mean you were always a devoted user I guess.
Rick Jazz
Enrique please hit me up, I met you at NAMM in April. I’ve emailed you !
Of course, the notes A,G,D do not make up a 'complete' chord. Especially not a triad chord as your G and A are only a interval apart. At best, what you 'claim' to have (though you did not say 9th) here is a G maj. 9th chord without the 3rd or 7th of the proper 7th chord G,B,D,F (A is the 9th).
I can't tell if your 'acting' as though you know what you did on the keyboard, with a sort of sarcastic humor regarding 'music theory'. That, or if you're just trying to 'fake' that you do -which you clearly do not.
Sooooo lame.
