  • A Look Back | OUTDOOR IDAHO
In 1972 the Sawtooths-along with the White Cloud and the Boulder Mountains-became part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, administered not by the National Park Service but by the U.S. Forest Service.
How this came to be is a story worth the telling. Forty years ago, Idaho was at the forefront of the nation's environmental movement, electing a governor who pledged to save Castle Peak and the White Clouds from the degradation of an open-pit mine.
We celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area by examining this remarkable period in Idaho's history, exploring what was gained, what was lost and what is yet to be considered.

Route 75 from Ketchum to Stanley is a drive all Americans should experience. It’s a study in natural beauty.

I love this presentation. So much if not all of what Idaho Public TV does is so perfectly done. Thank you so much!

More evidence that compromise and moderation are an honorable and necessary way forward. I don’t hunt or fish, or live out West, but the nat’l rec area was the best solution for most Idahoans and for future Americans.

I remember around that time I went with my dad brother and my dads friend on a guided hunt for elk and deer! It was a successful trip but I didn’t have a elk tag and about 25 yards away from me was a 7x7 elk just standing there in the hills just across a gully! Sitting on our horses just watching him for about 15 minutes! It must have known I didn’t have a tag! Didn’t come home with him! It was disappointing! When I was about 17!

Love the Sawtooths. It is sad that there are so many dead trees and fires in the summer. Hard to see the beauty in the summer and fall with all the smoke.

      I agree. Looove this area.
The fires are a result of Geo engineering hard at work.

Great video of an outstanding area. I had no idea Asarco was planning this mine. Wow.

That was a fantastic documentary. I live in Iowa and it breaks my heart to see how the land here is stripped of trees to add another row of corn stalks . I've traveled and camped in the Rockies for many years, and I belong there. Thanks for that video, it made me feel better.

The so called problem with negative minded Republicans moving into N. Idaho is a simple solution. Vote the jackasses out. Get off Ur ass Idaho and stand up. I plan to move there when I retire next year. Take Ur state back, or suffer the consequences. I'm heading there to back Ur asses up. Don't let me down. I will never let U people down. Not Ever.

"If the park service takes over, there will be no more hunting." That's what killed the NPS coming in, and thank God for that!

It's really sad when partisan issues are so polarizing that only the Left wing dorks will step up for conservation. Every outdoorsman, no matter how right wing, should have conservation at the front of their mind.
