The funny part about this performance was the guy was not only amazing but I also realize the singer Ashanti before she rose to stardom was an audience member in the crowd.
Yes I noticed her too lol 😆
white or black don't matter to me...its all about the voice...#1 in my book, the man can sing...
well of course he can sing, but whither he was white or black shouldnt matter, but we as african amreican people we expect so much from any one that sings a song by a iconic established falsetto singer such as Philip Bailey of earth wind and fire fame it would of been the same thing if he were to sing a song by the Legendary Eddie Kendrick of the Temptations, becuse the late mr.kendrick had established himself as a falsetto icon and we arent use to hearing an artist (white) doing a song by a voice that generally would be covered, by a african amreican, also it wasnt just blacks that were not pleased with his performance, there were whites that said he couldve done better, but iam speaking cultrually and not race wise
some in the audience dislike his talent
Let’s be honest tho lots weren’t feeling it because he was white
Okp
God has given this man a gift and I AM SO HAPPY FOR HIM VERY NICE VOICE
To even attempt to sing this song you got to be good!!! That he is!!!
Ladi Jae..U r so right cause that's a hard song to sing even for a female and he did an awesome job!
@@taratheus9214 it's not that hard.
@@rodjerdankist1125 True and it's not the easy either.
Yes He can sing! Philip Bailey probably called him to say hey man your really good!
Wow,this soulful brotha killed it!! What an incredible voice&range! I see u Ashanti😚😙😊😊
One of the best covers I’ve seen on reasons let alone a white guy doing it. The man got skills.
But did y'all see Ashanti in the audience though lol
Yes, she looks almost the same now!
Looks like Bobby Brown 2 seats away from her?
Nope
1:01
You did Phil Bailey 🤩 proud , blue eyed soul brother 🔥🔥🔥
A shame to see some of the audience sitting there, arms folded, thinking whatever it is they were thinking about white boy showing the love for our culture.
On another note: most of the crowd respond correctly, reminding me of the way Italian audiences respond when they hear great opera singers hitting notes that seem almost supernatural. Of course--just like Apollo audiences--they will let you know when they're disappointed. BIG TIME! This brother did NOT disappoint!
My favorite song off that album. Young girl was in ❤.
He's good! Rocked it!
I saw this when it first aired. I remember the audience booing him when he told them what song he was going to sing. I also remember going to work the next day and every black dude I worked with couldn't stop talking about it. This is awesome. Thanks for the upload. I think about this all the time :D
thats what I LOVED about watching the Apollo when I was a kid. You had to EARN the audience, you couldn't expect it (except he kids which is totally fine).
I agree. I remember for more amazing talent on Showtime at the Apollo than the people who won on American Idol. I've seen better losers on American Idol than the people who've won.
Im from the OLD SCHOOL and any time a singer has you SWAYIN to the music there GOOD,,,
Amazing job, Very talented guy!!!
Dang....this guy nailed it!!!
1:42 look at him in the middle of the screen lol he's so rude ... arms folded
I agree
yo this fool steve harvey had the best black dude wig hair I ever seen.He finally gave it up,his scalp must of sweat like crazy under that rug.
I don't get how women are attracted to men with low pitched voices, but at the same time this high pitched singing is considered sexy. Can an evolutionary biologist untangle this for me?
yep Ashanti was a regular. they used to put camera on her alot.
i was thinking about this show as i was listening to EWF. i saw it the night it first showed so decided to google it. can not believe i found it. steve harvey raged on him when he told him what he was gonna sing....when he was singing harvey was all like freaking out
Look at Steves crazy hair hat and countrythat Kuntry suit - he's come WAAAAAAAAY up since then.
I remember watching this episode lol miss those days
I watched this live back in the day... and DAMN wouldn't have remembered THAT!!!
Jersey City hit that note.................and held it for a sec..
You can tell they want him to fail so bad, but he doesn't, and they begrudgingly acknowledge he did ok at the end.
Wow he murdered it nbs!!! haters need to stop it
My go back to every night of music
why some of those brothers dissed him like that? I BET U HALF OF THEM DONT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THAT WHITE BOY
Simple answer, competition.
Racism.
@@MrMcGiblets1 Jealousy as well.
It’s sad he can sing and got soul for sure love it
JEALOUSY!! AND ENVY!! GOES HAND ✋ IN HAND ✋!!❤❤ HE WAS,GREAT!!!
I remember when this aired! Yes, White Chocolate DID that!!!!!! He sang his ass off!
I saw this when it originally aired too! I was a kid. I remember being blown away
You know everyone has that one white friend that can sing. But on another note i wish he sang the whole album. He was good.
I actually FeedBurner him singing that on tv. He won a few weeks in a row.like 94-95, either or
The guys face at 1:37 lol
He killed it!!!!
Great singing!
Wow great voice
He killed it!!!!!!
Wow. He. Did. Good. That's. a. Tough. Cloud it. Is. The. Apollo. Theatre.
the color filled right in as soon as he hit that high note haha
He killed it
no didn't notice Ashanti but what was extremely noticeable was the total disrespect to this wonderful talented guy... it's so sad &messed up after he had the guts to even perform at the Apollo &the nerve of the majority of jealous men sitting in the audience that just couldn't even muster up enough decency to show the respect this guy deserved...was just heartbreaking..now if the tables were turned then I'd be hearing oh they are racist...ya know fellows next time just pretend to have class even if the truth is you clearly don't..all the Chick's loved him & he was so good almost like the dramatics...&they were hot ....
B b
that white boy blew the hell out of resons
he sang that song, rip to the original Maurice he will never be forgotten
Great job my young brother. O. G.1
This song reminds me of my dad. He would sing this song when he’d be drunk as shit… but he couldn’t hit the high notes. 😂😂
Lol
Awww look at little Ashanti ❤
That was good!
Did anybody else notice Ashanti
I was wondering the SAME thing!
Yes, I saw her too
I was watching it on tv again and my dad and I said it looked just like her , I came to CZcams and this just confirmed It
1:01 omg Ashanti is jammin!!
I remember this!!!!!
He is doing an excellent job!!
Patta Waay I don't know his name.
boy u better sing.with your white chocolate self yessss honey
Phenomenal ❤❤❤
What’s Phillip Bailey 5 octaves,Ever see Acapella Soul do”Lions sleep tonite”. In NYC.Guy does this crazy falsetto and sings the low harmonies but sings as a tenor. It’s pretty impressive like this.
U R just GREAT⭐⭐⭐
Yup it's hard to accept the fact that this white dude can sing like this. lol! He killed it.
Ok he did that 🔥
My dude has some flavor!!!
I remember this
DAMN! He a Beast...
@tiana1017 - she's right at 1:02 wearing a cream silk jacket clapping her hands and her hair is up. She's of course younger when this was filmed and of course before we knew her.
He can sing.Philip Bailey sings the song not Maurice White.
That's true - Philip is the band's falsetto, not Maurice.
Wow!!
Wow!
Wow u blew me away wow just wow
He did the DAMN THANG!!!
Who IS this guy? Oh my...!!! SO wonderful. ❤️
Marian McAfee he must of never got a record deal.
AMAZING..
wow nice voice
Oh he def did that!
Yes he did!!!!!
Brothers do not cut 'White" dudes a break when they can really sing.
💜💜💜💜
He did his thang
Close Your Eyes And Open Your Ears. That Is All That Is Needed
Was really good
they stood up
He can sing those high notes
He DID not get booed offstage. FOR the Apollo, that is enough. He was medium quality, not a standing ovation guy. The fact that they clapped along was enough. If you don't understand the scene you can't comprehend my comment. If a black man's voice would have cracked at the end like this guy's falsetto, HE would have been booed. I've seen a lot of Apollo.
^_^ I do think that may have been a somewhat unfair comment, though I have been wrong before. I personally didn't care for the tone of his voice, but he did a very decent job for what he was working with. I feel that if you are going to come on this stage and sing a quintessential ballad(originally sung by perhaps the 70s greatest falsetto), you have to sing it just as well or BETTER -- He did not do that. But he brought tremendous courage and was easy-on-the-eyes, which makes me respect his capacity to garner respectable attention from the ladies. But I, as a man, found it hard to admire his tone -- So I can certainly understand why many of the fellows in the audience did not applaud.
Finally, someone comes with a truthful unbiased opinion.
Ashanti in the audience yes I spotted her!!!
(U got soul )undercover brother
They know he know what he doing they wnt boo him off... he got it
Ashanti was in the audience.
Music, the great unifier of people. Kids of different races and cultures should be made to listen to music together!
HIT IT BOY!!
Yes definitely Cool 👍🙏🏾
I hope that he got a contract
just cause people don't clap dosent make them haters.
Daaaaaamn he can sing! Damn shame so many haters in the audience.
He got it.
lol was good I remember this one
Sounds pretty much just like me whenever I lower the volume of a song I'm listening to.
Woooooow
was that ashanti????
Yea it was !!!
that's what I said!!!!lmao
chelerra you youngsters need to be turned on to some *real* old-school: Earth, Wind & Fire! Ashanti wasn't even a gleam in her mother's eye back then..she was still in pre-life baby heaven, haha!..and that brotha on the video could *sang!'* wake up! evolve! or you'll be left behind, kiddos..and *that's* a fact!
chelerra I peeped tht too!
Looks kinda looks like her 😂
Did anyone else spot Ashanti as a young girl in the audience 1:02 your welcome!
I didn't see haters between white and black. People don't have to clap or cheer to like the way he sang. Honestly people in the comments made it racial.
+Eduardo Gonzalez - this man did it... music is universal. if people don't get that then they simply are missing it.
dam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!he is good
Damn you sound so good you can sing to me anytime baby good job god BLESS you
soooo did anyone else notice Olivia from G- Unit and Ashanti??
I peeped
lmao yes
I remember this guy winning amateur night several times, this must have been the night he lost... he never really got booed off though.
ladydontekno he must of never got the record deal he want it.
Good just needed to slow it down a little bit but he did an awesome job
1:03 why did i think that was ashanti 😂
