    Bowie is one of the bravest, most innovative musicians ever. Every thing he did was new and different. Even if you didn't like some particular phase of his personally, you have to respect the fact that he never sat on his laurels. He couldn't stop trying new things, right till the day he died, he was innovating.

      He was also one of the most INTERESTING interview subjects EVER. Even if you had no clue about or interest in the subject he was going on about, his razor-sharp intelligence, resonant speaking voice, tendency to smile and laugh infectiously, and, really, just the sheer physical handsomeness of his face would make him mesmerizing. He knew about SO much, from architecture to zookeepers, and fascinating thoughts and observations on it all.

    My personal favorites by Bowie are "Golden Years" and "Young Americans." Bowie was the OG genre bender. You couldn't pigeon hole that man. Stevie Wonder had that kind of gravitas, too. Also, and I say this without looking it up (cuz I want my brain to work instead of my fingers)....I believe his real name is David Jones. He changed his name because he didn't want the confusion with Davy Jones from "The Monkees." At least that's what I remember haha. Great reaction!

    "Fame" was a number one hit in the U.S. for David Bowie in 1975. I remember hearing it on the AM pop station my parents listened to when I was seven or eight. The novelty of the descending vocal bit towards the end caught my attention. "Fame" was written by Bowie, Carlos Alomar and John Lennon and recorded at Electric Lady Studios, the studio Jimi Hendrix commissioned in 1968. That warbly falsetto voice that repeats the word fame in the background belongs to John Lennon. They also recorded a soulful cover of The Beatles classic "Across the Universe" which Bowie put on side two of his Young Americans album. "Fascination" on side one of that album is another funky treat. Bowie wrote it with Luther Vandross.

    When I saw Bowie early 70's we thought the show was over and wondered why no Space Oddity. It suddenly became pitch black then the guitar was strumming the first part of the song. Suddenly we hear, ground control to Major Tom look up and he's in mid air with spotlight on him. It looked like he was floating,with his orange hair, white powder caked on his face with a blue lightening bolt from ear to ear. His suit was blue. It was freaking great!!

    I think you would be hard-pressed to find an artist who was more diverse and more Fearless in his choices throughout his career than David bowie. Even down to embracing the very very commercial era of the Let's Dance album which featured guitar playing by Stevie Ray Vaughan by the by,.. and probably the peak of his success monetarily.. he went right back to Specialty albums and side bands such as his work with tin machine, and nine inch nails.. the dude was fearless. His last album Dark Star is freaking astonishing, such a strange and wonderfully intimate record that he did sometimes in bed, sometimes he could work with the musicians in person.. there's a great little documentary on it here on CZcams Somewhere I believe. Anyway Bowie for the win man.

  • @emmejayeh.5995
    @emmejayeh.5995 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Before the guitarist and co-writer of this song, Carlos Alomar, came to work with Bowie, he worked _for_ The Godfather of Soul, James Brown. One of the songs James used to do in his stage act was a cover of a 1960s tune called Footstompin'. Carlos was fiddling around with that melody in rehearsal one day and through it came up with the melody for Fame. John Lennon and David loved it, and they came up with the lyrics by referencing an ongoing conversation they'd been having about shitty managers, bad record and publishing deals, and how the music business tries to waylay the artist with distractions (like coke in a limo) so the artist doesn't notice that they're basically being robbed.
    Anyhoo, they write the song, it's released, it's a huge hit, and Carlos's old boss decides that he's going to swipe the melody for himself. James puts out a song called "Hot! Hot! Hot!" not even a year later. Carlos tells Bowie about it and asks, "Should we sue?" "Let's see if he makes any sales first, and if he does, THEN we'll sue," David said. James's record didn't do very well, so we were spared a sure-to-be-nasty mid-70s lawsuit making the papers. You should hear "Hot! Hot! Hot!" just for shits and giggles. It's not among James's best work, let's put it that way.

    A little bit of the back story - John Lennon sings back-up and this was Bowie's best charting song in the US until Let's Dance in the 80's. Off the Young Americans album which her referred to as his Plastic Soul period - he performed it on Soul Train when it was released. He was involved with black back-up singer Ava Cherry who took him to the Apollo theater where he found is band for the album and Luther Vandross, another back-up singer on the album and help with a lot of the arrangements. Other excellent songs from that period: Young Americans, Fascination (lyrics including him saying Sure 'nuff) and Golden Years also performed on Soul Train.

    Married twice, once to Angie and once to Iman. Two tall, slender, fatally beautiful women. Much like Bowie himself.
    This song is in large part about the effect of cocaine. This was Bowie's entrance into disco, where he made a good handful of hits before moving on. "What you like is in the limo, what you get is no tomorrow, what you need you have to borrow." Rise and fall in one sentence, that insane rollercoaster that had a unique flavor in the 70's. (The Eagles are another band that wrote about the effects of cocaine.) Bowie was never afraid of facing his own darkness; his work in Berlin went into some scary areas.

    Since so many people are suggesting the classics I'll go left field and suggest y'all to react to late-career Bowie: The Heart's Filthy Lesson from Outside (Mind-bending album), Little Wonder from Earthling, Thursday's Child from 'Hours…', Slip Away or Slow Burn from Heathen, New Killer Star from Reality, You Feel So Lonely You Could Die from The Next Day or Lazarus from Black Star. All killer songs that you'll love.

    His real name is David Jones. He had already been working under that name for a little while when The Monkees hit big, and their lead singer was Davy Jones.

    Bowie was a chameleon. Sound,vision and style personified. More Bowie? Ok Space Oddity, Man Who Sold the World, Changes, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel, Ashes to Ashes, Let's Dance, Young Americans, that's a good starter list.
