2011 Kia Soul 5-Speed Manual Review / More than a Toaster

- The 1st gen Kia Soul sat in the middle of the struggling high-riding hatchback segment. But unlike the Scion XB and Nissan Cube, the Soul stuck around and fought it out with the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa Note too. Today, I figure out why it has made it so far.
Thank you, Royal South Mazda Volvo, for letting me test out the Soul for today’s review!

I drove one once and remember the wheels seeming so tiny. Kinda a neat car. Also remember seeing a lot of Ford Flex's at the same time. That golden age of rolling squares
I've almost forgotten about the Flex, that was an odd era for cars looking back now.
I loved the Soul from the moment it came out, and I ended up buying a 2016 +, which only came in automatic. It was a great car for 6.5+ years, but I started getting a little uneasy about Kia's track record with engine failures, and I was also pining for a manual transmission before they disappeared altogether, so I traded it in last month for a Corolla Hatchback with a 6-speed manual. I definitely don't miss the fuel economy on the Soul--about 22 MPG in my city commute, compared with 30 so far with the Corolla Hatchback.
The 1.6 could be ordered with manual. I almost bought a new one for $13700 discounted end of 17. I bought a clean 31k mile 2015 ScionXB manual instead. Love it. Keeping forever. Corolla is fantastic newer car, too. Good choice. You’ll get far more years out of it.
I have a 2011 base model, manual just like this. It may not be the sexiest car in the world but it is the best car that I have ever owned. I bought it in 2015 and since then it has needed tires, a battery and oil and filter changes, that's it. A small, efficient car with lots of room in it with rear seats folded down. Dead reliable, dead dependable. If you want a great car, get a manual Kia Soul. You will not regret it.
The Soul is almost like the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Kia marketed it as this fun, funky youthful car (with the hip hop hamster commercials), but many of the people who bought them were seniors. They appreciated the ride height and easy ability to just slide in the drivers seat without having to hunker down like in a sedan or really step up like in an SUV. Just like the PT Cruiser was for them.
And the Scion XB. The Nissan Cube as well, but that had a bad transmission, so almost nobody bought them.
Very true too, although, the soul did actually do well with young people too, it is a great car for old joints!
When you compare the cube and soul to the new crossover things they don't seem so bad. Ex trax ecosport compass juke
@@Bleachanna Compact crossovers are such a stupid choice. Compromised in every way. A small hatchback would get better mileage and handle better, but Americans want to "sit up high" so they lose 5 MPG (at least) and decent handling to get that.
I own a black 2011 Kia Soul base 1.6 manual. I bought it brand new. I'm still driving it today. Just crossed 170k miles.
How is it 8 months later? Looking at one with 101k miles.
Bro! I drive this car but a 2-litre one with 204000 Kms on it, it's fun watching this video👍 I never timed 0-100, might try now😁
Give her a send for me
I own one.....50mpg highway was my best on average. The head unit died.....which I now have Android 13 large display from eBay. ;)
I absolutely love it.....5 speed and great in the snow. I drive it in 45 below in Fairbanks Alaska and she does awesome.....full synthetic oil with block heater and battery charger installed.
Cheers!!!
I love obscure manual cars
Me too, it adds a layer of personality
@@Realistick would love to see you review more rare manual version of normal cars!
@@xnopyt13 Me too, I'm always looking for them.
We have a 2011 Soul 5 speed and it’s the absolute most reliable car we’ve owned. Easy to maintain only had to replace the clutch at 170k miles. It really could use a six speed but definitely likes to rock and roll at high rpm. I keeps it clean too!
I’m currently looking to buy used 2011 kia soul with 137k km, do you I will have issues with it?
@@Sandydiyab5 The Kia Soul is one of the cars ever
Still have my 2012 Soul and now it's starting to fall apart. It's been a fun ride. Sound system is bangin too
Did you do 100 pushups prior to filming? Daaaang!
Can you review the second generation Kia Soul?
Love your videos!
I will if a good one comes across my radar and there seems to be enough interest to justify it!
Looked at the second gen new in 2017 heavily discounted manual 1.6 liter for under 14k. I drove a 2015 manual Scion XB, for even less money, with 31k miles.. it was a much better car all around. Still loving it! Kias just are not great cars 200k miles later, if lucky. The Scions will be just beginning to walk. I think the XBs look and feel and drive way better. The clear middle dash instrument cluster is fantastic as well.
Base model manuals are great. I had a 2004 Elantra base model with the manual and it was problem free for 130,000 miles. I almost bought a base Hyundai Venue manual two years ago and I kick myself for passing as they don’t make it anymore.
It gives them some charm! I didn't know they killed that off, I am not surprised but it's a sad day nonetheless.
Just a question..... in the UK market we only have the 1.6 petrol or 1.6 Deiseal .... when in the US which is the fuel you talk about... as it is not easy defined
Also the MPG is way lower than UK MPG on the 1.6
Petrol! (Our mpg testing is different)
I have a 2016 Kia Soul with the M/T. It goes from 0 to 60 in like a week and a half. Kind of gutless, but kind of fun as well. The only thing I do not like is that my imsurance premiums just about doubled due to the fact that the Kia Soul is one of the models easily stolen.
No its not
It’s weird, mine i just bought us a Canadian base model 2010. Looks exactly the same as yours even the same color although the door handles are different, I have audio control buttons on the steering wheel, no a/c, no abs, rear drum brakes, no cruise control BUT it does have electric windows and mirrors and heated seats🤷♂️
I always find what automakers choose to include and leave out for different countries and trims fascinating
Im on #2, little car with a big front seat .
Why am I looking at this elephant in 2022? Are you having a sorry nostalgia run?
There's a big hole in the video market for quality videos on used cars (people still buy these). These types of videos typically do well in the long run for that reason and they are fun to make! ALSO, very much a nostalgic run too. I'll have a video on a new car tomorrow.
@@Realistick And I applaud you for that. Few years down the road manual transmissions will be extinct while electric cars will be suitable for those who have no taste or desire for the real cars.
Thank you for your channel. You are the best. 👍
@@Realistick yep i'm currently looking at a 2011 soul 5mt myself
Lol this gas milage is amazing if you ever owned a truck
