We had a Kia Soul as a rental car. Let me be honest, you don’t like them until you have one for a week. They’re terrific little cars, I definitely recommend them to anyone who wants a cool hatchback thing.
My mom had a 2020 Soul for a rental while her other car was getting repaired, and i can agree that they are solid hatchbacks. Shame it was CVT.
My parents got a manual one last year and they're awesomely practical also the engine is mega responsive even though it's just a NA 1.6
I totally agree. When I saw that I was getting a Kia Soul for a rental, I was disappointed. As soon as I got in and drove it, I changed my mind. Looking to get one now.

Or "your Uber driver (Doug, 43) is arriving."
Doug Cunningham you mean yourself? Your name is Doug
I'm dying. 💀
Is that a good or bad thing?
Yes, Doug, they did think outside the box. And once outside that box, they saw the box, and designed the KIA Soul based on that box.
Boxy cars are not ugly. In fact it is a good design choice, although American mentality doesn't understand that.
My sister drives a jeep patriot and its boxy.
I'm sorry the car you are thinking of is the first gen Scion xb
I have a 2020, 2.0 liter engine. 8 speed automatic transmission. Sport mode, it increases the rpm by 1000. Can be driven like a standard. This is my third Soul. This is a fast car. Gen. X
Actually, the designer stated it was designed as a warthog wearing a backpack. There used to be a video on their website about it when the first gen was new.

Sometimes you got to love simple and ordinary cars.
And we love him for it.
I just bought a base 2021. The base engine is not boring, it has great low end for around town driving. I was shocked tonight when I stabbed the gas at 65, saw the tach snap to almost 6 grand and felt it pull cleanly and smoothly to 100much better than I expected it to. I also just drove from Reno to the Bay Area, used the cruise control at 6 5 for the whole trip and got 39.3 mpg. I'm very happy with this purchase and look forward to many more miles behind the wheel while I finish rebuilding my 91 Corvette.
Yeah just make sure you keep a VERY keen eye on oil levels and make sure your PCV valve is replaced at least every 30k miles or your engine will die. I have a 2016 with 250k miles on it and all I have changed is the alternator but everyone else is losing their engines
Ended up buying a Soul after years of never thinking I would buy one, and I've had 0 problems with it so far 2 years and 52k miles in. Fantastic car, very roomy for the size (I've camped in the car even), and gets good mileage if you drive it right (I even got 43 mpg on a drive once, and usually get 36-40 mpg every drive). Love the quirky design as well, always loved quirky looking cars. Very surprised with how practical the car is, considering Kia's reputation for subpar quality.

This looks quite big for a small car, small car I'm thinking VW Up! or Toyota Aygo... but in America everything is bigger of course
That reminds me of the time Toyota went crazy and made, well the Aygo Crazy lol
It's small for America
In US normal cars are considered "small cars" for rest of the world standards.
Even in America we have things like the Chevy Sonic (Aveo abroad), Chevy Spark, Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi Mirage (Space Star in Europe), Smart Fortwo, and Honda Fit. But that's about it.
The Soul is shorter in length than a Volkswagen Golf -- definitely a compact car, even in Europe. Not a subcompact/supermini, but a compact for sure.
Normal sized sedan: **exist**
Americans: "That's a compact."
I've lived in 7 different countries in NA, Asia, Africa, and SA. Everywhere I've been the soul would be a compact.
