Thank you for your question. The tower is reserved for scientific purposes only. We therefore ask for your understanding that it is not open to the public.

Is the staircase open to the public? I know most people would never go this far just to climb a tower but I definitely would. Just to see the view would be amazing

    Climbing is challenging and tiring

You can never have too much data.

How many lightning strikes per year does the structure endure and how are the people and equipment protected? To some extent, this must be a problem that was already encountered with radio and TV towers, but the question leaps to my mind when seeing people climb one in a rainforest.

Nobody has ever counted the lightning strikes, but the ATTO tower is definitely hit several times per year.
The theory of lightning conductance of a scaffold tower into the ground is essentially based on catching potential lightning by a geometrical system of lightning rods on top of the tower and by guy wires which hold the tower. If rods and wires have robust, lightning-current resistant connectors to the tower construction, the electrical current is guided down into the ground along corner pillars of the tower and the guy wires. Both must be ideally grounded. If connections are well done, there won’t be any damage to the tower. Instruments on the tower must be well isolated from the tower, moreover the housing of the instruments must be well (galvanically) separated from the electronic parts of the instruments.
So far, we have lost only little hardware on the tower by lightning induced surge. Our staff is protected by strict prohibition to be on the tower during or even approaching bad weather conditions.
