    When someone says that video games cannot be considered art, I show them Dear Esther.

    ...I never quite figured out why, but I cried like a babe at the end of this game. It wasn't so much a game for me...more an experience that I couldn't quite figure out. I played it from start to finish in one sitting, finishing in the early hours of the morning. It was raining outside. No other gaming experience has moved me quite like Esther.

      It's a very sad story, but not really laid out to you. Your character was Esther's husband or partner, but they are estranged. Donnely is part of a love triangle involving them. Esther was killed in a drink driving incident, which your character is implied to have caused. The game is him coming to terms with what he's done, and accepting the results.

    I may be hearing things, but can’t you hear a flatline at the end? Then a voice saying “come back”. Since it’s the narrator’s voice, I can only assume that this is Esther making her way through death.

    • @GenGamesUniverse
      @GenGamesUniverse Před 5 lety +8

      From what I gather is this -
      Esther is dead which is why the narrator reads a letter in pieces called "Dear Esther,", however, it's assumed that the MC that we play as is the narrator himself as he says "I have burnt my death certificate" and then kills himself soon after. It's apparent that the shadowy figure is Esther but she disappears before you can get to her (i.e. the main character/you being stuck in purgatory) and at the end, he doesn't "kill himself", he passes over to the other side.
      It's also interesting to note that there are two possible routes for this - either he was intoxicated and caused the car crash which killed Esther or a drunk driver did.
      Also, the "come back" bit does sound like a flat line.

    Sometimes I wish I could leave everything behind, travel to some beautiful remote island off the coast of scotland, ascend to the top of a tower like this, and take in the beauty all around me, before jumping.

    This wasn’t a game . No this wasn’t something I get excited about when I finish work and crack
    Open a beer and sit on my chair and enjoy the night . This was an experience. A blessing . I never played a game that made me so amazed and sad at the same time I cried so much through out the game listening to the narrator talk about the letters. This is by far most emotional game ever so
    Far for me and it wasn’t even that long of a game . Dear Esther is one of a kind ❤️❤️❤️

    Picked this up as it was free on Steam. I honestly got bored after a few minutes as there's nothing to do except walk around aimlessly. I just searched for the ending to see if anything worthwhile happens, and... well... no. Saved myself some time!

      i got it for free too and honestly only played it for achievement but it was quite the enjoyable experience, the director's comments gave a lot of insight to the meaning and making of the game. i'd suggest using one of steam's guides (e.g. the one for getting all the voice overs) to avoid walking around aimlessly and not knowing where to go
