With hair algea I use a couple chopsticks and pinch some and twirl it like spaghetti then pull it out. I keep doing that as it grows and eventually it's gone.
Physical removal is the best way. I only get hair algae in one of my tanks and the only difference I can determine is the light. I don't know if it's the spectrum/color of that light or the strength. I put a timer on that light about 2 weeks ago so it's off for a large part of the day when I'm not home and now the hair algae is almost gone. The light comes on from 7:30am-9am and off until 4:30pm when it comes back on until 9pm, in total it's on for just 6 hours. There is ambient light from the other tanks and window so the fish and plants aren't in total darkness the rest of the time.
I've tried 2 different times to grow cardinal plants. 2 plants the first time, and then just 1 plant the 2cd time. Big flops both times. Mine melted away til nothing was left. So chin up Chris, it's not just you. I know that I feel better knowing that it was nothing that I did. Or I hope so anyway. If you figure out why they melted away will you please let me know? Or maybe you could do a video on it?
