      @@user-wq9mw2xz3j Yes that's right, it can be useful because it doesn't take the resources until it starts creating each unit, but annoying that it just cancels when you run out. I use it most often on Universities when I want as many scholars as possible, but rarely get the full amount before running out of wealth.

    • @user-wq9mw2xz3j
      @user-wq9mw2xz3j Před rokem +1

      @@twiglets2 Well for me the fact that it stops after running out of the resource makes it useless, because if I wanted to use that resource for something else I can just do that at first anyways (and then shift+create the unit). Just 1 less button to keep track off.
      Otherwise it could indeed be useful since as you say it doesn't take up the resources before starting to create the unit. But 99% of times unit costs are less than anything else (building or research) that'd you'd otherwise use the resource(s) for, so I can't see any time I'd want to use it over creating them normally even for scholars.
      Of course, this is for me, not saying nobody can use them.

    Question here, about Caravan. You suggested to block Caravan path between Enemy city's to attack them. But how do you protect your own caravan from enemys attack?

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  Před 2 lety +2

      That's a good question, and I hope there are more experienced players who will weigh in on this, but here are my thoughts:
      Ultimately the best way to protect caravans is with your army, however most of the time you want your army in one place, and attacking. So this isn't ideal but you could allocate some units to protect your caravans, particularly in the area between cities where they are most vulnerable, you could set them to patrol so they can automatically cover more ground, but again this isn't an ideal use of your units.
      City placement is important as this determines the route a caravan will take. The closer they are together, the shorter the route, the safer they will be. But a shorter route means less wealth, so you must weigh this up too. You can also use terrain to your advantage when placing cities, choke points will limit your opponents options to get behind you and attack your caravans, making them easier to defend / easier to spot a raid on your caravans before it hits.
      If you don't have enough caravans to move between every single city, you can manually instruct the caravan on which two cities to move between, and choose safer cities. You could place a tower along the more vulnerable sections of the route, not something you see often, but I do see pro players placing a tower by wood cutter camps and rare resources, so if that happens to be near a caravan route that's a nice bonus.
      I think ultimately the best thing you can do is attack. If you're attacking and they are defending then your caravans are more likely to be safe. Get a good eco and a big army then go cause trouble, and you'll likely not have a problem.
      Sorry this was so long but I hope it was useful!

    Great viddy as always. Coupla questions concerning the "hotkey mapping" with damaged units and selecting multiple buildings:
    1) 00:38--You say whenever you select units after hotkey mapping damaged units they all show up after selection. Not sure what you mean here. Does hotkey mapping override selecting healthy units in the same group for other commands like an attack move? And what if they're different types of units in different locations? Siege won't heal in Barracks, right, nor would Cavalry (correct me if I'm wrong). How would you handle these with such a global command? Seems you'd have to micro different types of units to the nearest appropriate building. Or what?
    2) Hitting SHIFT + S would select all Stables IIRC. Let's say you set a rally point for them on your Patriot unit. Likewise all Barracks and Siege. Can you group these different types of military buildings into a single control group all rallied on the Patriot? If so, how exactly would you do it?
    Then you get a General and want to set him up as a reserve "fireman" in case the enemy tries to attack elsewhere from your Patriot's army. Can you select different types of military buildings---like one each Barracks, Stable and Siege Factory previously rallied to the Patriot---and group them together to create a dedicated control group rallied to the General?
    Sorry to sound dumb but this hotkey stuff seems a little obscure. Thanks for your kind attention. Cheers!

      @twiglets2  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Jon, it's been a while - I hope you are well!
      Great questions, and I've had to scratch my head a bit to answer them! Here are my thoughts:
      1) There's a specific hotkey that "selects all damaged units". I'm not sure what the default is, but I change the hotkey to something more easily remembered. All other unit selection / groupings still work in the same way, but when you use that specific hotkey, everything under full health will be selected.
      I believe it will only select units that are on screen at the time, but I may be wrong on that specific point.
      You're absolutely right that only certain units will "fit" inside certain buildings, and of course there may be capacity issues if you have too many of the same unit. There's no perfect way around this that I've found, other than rotating units as best I can with the space available. If you're at your own city you have a fair amount of choice, but if you only have a fort, not so easy! On a different note it's also useful when you're attacking as you can easily tell all injured units to move back behind the full health units.
      2) My preference is to create a control group for the same buildings, ie 3 stables, 3 barracks and set their rally points to a patriot. But mixing and matching say, 1 stables, and 1 barracks to the same hotkey...I don't think that would work so well in terms of quickly producing units, although you could set a rally point for them. If you have a patriot and a separate general I suppose you could set up the rally points as appropriate, then use shift S to select all stables, produce units, and they will rally to their respective rally point. It would take a bit of setting up but seems more than worth the time investment! Though I'm afraid I don't have a perfect solution to that one.
      I hope I've understood your questions correctly. Perhaps some other more experienced players will contribute / correct me too!
      Happy gaming!

      @@twiglets2 Thanks for your prompt reply. Been under the radar for awhile to peruse Breakaway's old RT Napoleonic battles Waterloo and Austerlitz plus renew a romance with Civ3 & 4. Jack of all trades etc.
      Regarding question one my understanding is that SHIFT + HOME selects wounded units from a particular group of units while CTRL + HOME is a global command selecting ALL wounded units wherever they are. I'll try to confirm this through the course of playing (if I ever get around to it after digesting this profusion of information!).
      By chance happened to catch Rise of Patience's "Things I Do Most Players Don't" shortly after posting and he showed, as you did, how to "map" the hotkey to his mouse. So I experimented and found my mouse can do it by wheeling up or down. Problem solved apparently.
      Question two was something of a "knuckleball" (in baseball, a pitch that is designed to move unpredictably before reaching the plate.) Didn't expect any easy answer so experimentation is in order.
      Two last questions then: 1) Do you have to cancel a rally point before making a new one; and 2) Do you create the control group for Barracks and Stables together or separately? Like, can you select all Barracks by clicking on one Barracks then press HOME (according to one hotkey guide), select a Stable and press HOME, then hit CTRL + F1 or whatever? Or must each type have its own control group (like all Barracks being F1, all Stables F2, etc.)?
      Sorry if this over-intellectualizes something that's probably intuitive to many RTS gamers. Thanks for your patience in responding and for uploading such informative viddies. Us intermediate (noob?) players really appreciate it. Cheers!

      @@jonshive5482 I keep meaning to play Civ V, it's in my games library but I've not gotten round to it, though I hear 3 or 4 are both better than 5!
      1) You don't need to cancel a rally point before creating a new one, the new one will override the previous one for that building. It's also useful to use a rally point when ungarrisoning units to dictate which side of the building they will appear, in case you want them to escape enemy fire!
      2) It might be possible to hotkey Barracks and Stables together, but I don't think that would be overly practical when it comes to unit creation. I believe you would have to select one type of building to access the build menu and create new units. But with that said, if you wanted a separate hotkey to select ALL unit creation buildings simply to change their rally point, I don't see why not!
      Thank you for your questions, it's a pleasure as always! I hope the answers I've given are correct, but I must confess they're areas I'm not too confident in myself!

      @@twiglets2 And thanks for your detailed replies. What I really need to do is just play the goldarned game and see what works. Played a quick battle yesterday on Normal difficulty at Slow speed. Despite it being a comedy of errors managed to eke out a Capital win in the Info Age. (Actually bribed four enemy units, imagine that!) RoN is much like chess; if you get away from it awhile it's hard to get back without some embarrassment.
      BTW I'll probably never be a competitive player. At my Biblically mature age Slow is all I can handle. At least that's an improvement over a dozen or so years ago when Very Slow was difficult and Tough Wonder wins were my highest achievement. Maybe with more experience with Hotkeys and experimentation a Tougher win might be possible. Ya never know!
