20 Small but Excellent Changes to Features in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

- Smash Ultimate improves a lot on the foundations of previous games. Mechanics have been refined, stages were pulled from across the series, and EVERYONE IS HERE! However, I want to shift focus from the big and flashy, to talk about the smaller changes to the game. Some of these are definitely secrets tucked away in the deepest trenches of the game, but I want to discuss 20 changes to features from Smash past to give them some well deserved attention. It's surprising just how long it took to get some of these changes in the game.
When I found a few exciting changes in Smash Ultimate, I figured I had to talk about them somehow. They were, all things considered, small quality-of-life changes that new players might not even notice. So I figured it wasn't enough to make a whole video...until I kept finding more and more; certainly there was a enough then to make a video! Rummaging around, I noticed that many of these changes were not being discussed at all, and after uncovering a noteworthy number one, I figured the effort was worth it. I hope you enjoy the video, and also find something entirely new!

This list is ordered from least favorite to most favorite, however, it is not exhaustive. This is a bit arbitrary, but so is "small", so I'm counting on you to not mind. The list is also restricted from Nintendo Direct information and character specific changes to encourage conversation of the untold.

I did not figure out the Metroid Weakness on my own. This was taken from various sources, however, it fits the list perfectly so I felt I should include it.
MrAuthor3DS deserves credit for commenting about the removal of the Super Star reward in WarioWare; I still retain that I noticed it prior.

Most significant minor change in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
- The box background behind character portraits of the fighters has been tilted counterclockwise by 30°
It looks way better this way idk why
I honestly think that my favorite change in Ultimate, the UI!
IT LOOKS SO P R E T T Y!
Kinda looks like the ROBLOX logo
Smash Ultimate is such an edge lord, it tilted the boxes behind each character portrait.
If I wanna play frame by frame then I'll go do some online fights 🙄
i believe smash is client based, not server based.

Here’s something funny though
Alucard can’t be spawned in the Wii fit stage
Sad, would be a nice touch having him appear there and not reflecting in the mirrors...
Álvaro Sánchez I don't think the game's mirror mechanics could actually make that happen; which is probably why Alucard can't be summoned in that stage at all.
Removing just his reflection and not himself was probably too much work so they just disabled him there.
What about Fountain of Dreams?
@@mettatonex7221 Alucard can be spawned in Fountain of Dreams and has a reflection. Just tested it myself.
It is canon that sandbag does not feel pain. In fact, he simply enjoys being involved.
GlitchyGuy It’s in both his smash 4 and brawl trophy descriptions.
So Sandbag is now a masochist.
Kinky
@@islandko2402 he doesn’t feel pain though, so it’s more of a “just happy to be here” thing
About the Figure 8 circuit: it always bothered me how it was called Mario Circuit in Brawl and Wii U even though it was clearly based on the actual figure 8 circuit from Mario Kart DS, so I welcome that change, especially since the Wii U Mario Circuit is indeed the Mario Kart 8 Mario Circuit.
And Wii U Mario Circuit isn't a Figure 8, but rather a Mobius Strip.
11:24 In a similar fashion Alucard is not allowed on the wii fit mirror stage. Because, you know, he is a vampire and they dont really like mirrors.
Well, half-vampire. Google "dhampir"
Glad somebody knows.
and how Knuckles can't be summoned on Green Hill Zone due to being in the background.
Edit: Also for some reason Nikki can't be summoned on Final Destination.
Most of the Pokemon and Assist Trophies that go in the background are banned from stages with an object that they can clip through in the background, but only if that particular one actually clips on that stage.
Also, for some reason Marshadow is banned on a lot of stages, but it seems like it's because Marshadow don't play nice with some moving platforms and somehow breaks itself, the platform or another part of the game, because that's the common denominator on the stages that it's banned from.
Vampires dont dislike mirrors, you just cant see them in a mirror, get your gotdam facts straight you outdated meme
11:44 you put great bay in F Tier? It should at least get points for having moon in the background
Agreed.
Yeah well that Moon needs to stop trying to destroy the planet and help me beat this very annoying Falcon...
...
I hear you though.
Also the titans and the heart piece!
What's your favorite change in Ultimate?
Also heads up, the next video will be Noki Bay! 🐚
I love how you can't summon Alucard assist trophy in Wii Fit Studio. Think about it
@@silver5798 I don't get it, but I haven't played Castlevania.
Yay another Sunshine video!
DID I HEAR SUNSHINE??? HYYYPPEEEE. Love watching your videos again, and again, and again, and again, and again, ...
YES NOKI BAY IS AWESOME
i've been awaiting this. I have the right to be excited
Fun Fact: Alucard doesn’t appear in Wii Fit Studio, because of the huge mirror.
Get it? He’s a vampire
He's a dhampir...
I thought he was an eripmav
That's actually really clever!
The default controls thing being changed back to the original default when a name is made is great because if most your friends like dislike tap jump and play without it, if someone wants tap jump they just make a name. That way you dont need to go to the controls menu right before the match and it saves a ton of time. Also you consistently post good vids, keep it up!
Ah, that's a fair point! Still weird that there's no way to change it though.
At 17:20 I couldn't resist singing "I AM DOCTOR MARIO I CAN DO TRICKS"
I am doctor mario I am super cool

6:41 I'm not okay, Game&Watch is my main and the green one is my favorite!

FST TV SAME! My friends always used to trap me in the teal one, but now they can’t!
Comments are starting to pop up about this so I want to set the record straight. The audio fuzziness you might hear is an ffmpeg issue that happened at the very last step in the process; as everything had been fine up until that point, I figured it was my headphones glitching out (I can't hear it on my speakers). I now know ffmpeg actually messed it up, and I will make sure it does not happen again. I hope it doesn't bother anyone too much! Sorry!
Why was I using ffmpeg? Well for some reason the audio likes to desync ever so slightly, and I have to fix it in Audacity and recombine the audio with ffmpeg. Audio is a pain; why it won't just work I'll never know!
Particular Mushroom wow just 3 mins ago
Didn't notice it or it didn't bother me, I guess. Great job on the vid. :)
The ability to select which Assist Trophies appear in Training mode is nice and all, but we need it in regular Smash. Even if certain assists can't be summoned on certain stages (i.e. no Moon on Great Bay because it's already there).
Does that mean no Assist Trophies spawn if the only one(s) you turn on don't appear on that stage?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who only listens to *Environmental Noises*
I’m still the only one who listens to *Hanenbow original*
YOOO RIGHY IM NOT THE ONLY ONE PISSED ABOUT BLACK YOSHI YOOO THAT WAS MY SKIN. THEY YOOK AWAY MY SKIN
everyone one earth is pissed
That title slide-in for each number on the list is sleek!
You mean, like a sleek glid? 😉
Also a neat little thing, meta knight when he performs a perfect shield or gets a final smash, his eyes turn red, because they are already yellow
There are even pokemon omitted from stages as well.
@@HatInLime for example, lunala can't be used in wario ware stage. I think there are assist trophies that don't appear in stages as well. Like the moon not appearing on wario ware stage as well.
I'm so happy characters don't just slowly drift to their death like in ssb4.
$20 says he chose 20 changes for the video just to make the 20/20 vision pun
Much better, Particular Mushroom. I noticed many of these changes but certainly not all of them: the longer Smash-charge time is probably what I consider to be the best change to the core gameplay. There are still many small changes I wish they had made but I love the game regardless.
While definitely not a small change, am I the only one who considers getting one-hundred percent in Smash Ultimate to be laughably easy compared to every other Smash game? (save for Smash 64, obviously) Normally, I'd put hundreds of hours into a Smash game and still be far from super-clearing; with Ultimate, I had fully completed Adventure mode, all-fights, all-skills, on hard difficulty; cleared Classic mode with every character; completed all 124 Challenges without ever using a single hammer; beat every single Spirit Board target; obtained all 1300 spirits (I can't get the last two because they aren't available without buying Pokemon Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu yet); and even obtained every music track and Mii outfit -- all within a mere 125 hours and I'm by no means a Smash pro. I'm wondering if any other single-player Smashers out there were also taken aback by the weird sensation of actually having done *everything* in a Super Smash Bros title. It feels really weird to say "I love Smash Ultimate; I just wish there were more things to do...." I'm not bragging, just wondering if anyone else noticed the 100%ing game is much shorter/easier from a single-player perspective.
This game really has it all. I'm a competitive player that doesn't get very far when actually competing but destroys everyone who isn't also a hardcore player. That said, I have at least some skill. Beating all the challenges was hard for me though in things like brawl. "Complete boss battles on intense" ? Phht yeah okay. The challenges now can be tough but are always possible. I'm glad things are easier in a way that makes you personally feel accomplished. I fear what the next smash game will bring since the current one is truly the most ultimate. Thank you for sharing.
@@kingmeprime Thank you; nice to know I'm not the only one that noticed that.
the let’s go spirits show up on spirit board now i think
@@snitchbug After reading your comment I loaded up the game to check and YEP: I can confirm that with v2.0.0 it is now possible to collect all 1303 spirits with Pokemon Let's Go save data: pbs.twimg.com/media/DyawSZDVAAAdcbP.jpg
Yeah, it’s a lot easier, until you try to complete every character’s Classic Mode on 9.9. Definitely, uh, very hard.
This Galaxy is not the saaaameee without youuuuu
Damn! I thought i knew everything in smash! Like you can freeze metroids now?! Pow blocks stack?! And most importantly, you can delay/speed the warpstar?! Keep up the amazing videos your the best!
A *Particular Mushroom* upload really makes the entire day golden, y'know?
I already knew 4 of them. I now have 4/20 vision Kappa
**Spoilers to the list**
I didn't know about the pow blocks, that was good to know.
I didn't know about the hammers since I'm so conservative with them and try to use them only when the challenge is impossible
I didn't know about the default control stuff, that blew me away!
I didn't know about the warp star, that changes everything
I didn't know about metroid that also blew me away
I didn't play enough of the previous smash games to notice that stage name changes
6 things, that's a lot. I thought I knew everything about this game. However, now I'm 6 steps closer to that goal 😎😎 Good work PM
seems particularily interesting
the transitions that come in between each number are great!! Nice video as always man
The first time I watched this video was as a user just on a Smash content binge, but after watching every other video on this channel, I had to come back for a full rewatch and truly appreciate the beautiful words of our very Particular Mushroom!
Another minor change is that after you win a team match BOTH characters will do a victory pose, instead of just the team member with the highest score. Small, but nice to see :)
My favorite change is being able to have the little images when changing costumes(friends don’t know why though but I would spend like a minute cause I got excited)
“ITS JUST A GREASY SPOON...”
sorry... just got a little into the song there
I really wish Home Run Contest was back. Or even somethin like Brawl Break the Targets.
They easily could've named Yoshi's Island (Melee) to "Dinosaur World" or "Donut Plains", the former being a reference to the location that the entirety of Super Mario World takes place in and the latter being a reference to the second world of the game.
Also, it does make sense why Moon doesn't appear in Great Bay considering its falling in the background.
I am so happy someone else is as hype about hotheads as I am! Great video as always Pmushy!
Some of these suprised me thanks for brining them up.
Genuinely had no idea we had a Team Randomizer. That's gonna be fun.
I only knew 9/20 of these going in. A very fun and informative video.
I can't express how much I love your videos, you write and deliver them so well, and you always talk about a topic that is so niche or unique and you talk about it so well and with all of your passion so that literally no one else could make a video about the topic that I would actually enjoy watching. I"m so glad I found your channel!
Nice list! Most of these flew over my head while playing. Looking forward to your next Sunshine vid!
I knew about all except bomb changes, star removal(Wario Ware), freezing Metroids, warp star timing, sandbag grabbing, pow block stacking, and the random team button.
OOOHHH so that's how you destroy the metroid... Thx alot
The mushroom in your intro get me every time
In the Wii fit studio you can't spawn alucard.
Likley becuase he is a vampire and doesn't have a reflection
Another thing about both hammers that I like is that it freezes your opponent longer when you hit them so not only can have time to see the retro hit effect, but also it sells the power of the hit even more just like when you land a knee with Falcon but not as extreme
Dodge spamming.
I'm so glad they fixed that.
Great video, love the presentation and I'd love more like that! Glad I knew numerous of those changes as well!
Welp, time to change my default controls!
Legend says... he’s still telling us about how exited he is to use Hothead again...
There is something inherently adorable about this videos focus on items. I keep forgetting its possible to play with items, and that some people prefer to play this way.
this is the 1st time watching a video of you and i was laughing when i saw that intro for no reason
Thought this would be a video of 20 small things that could be changed to improve Ultimate. I was wrong. This was a positive video, and so much better.
You’re forgetting about the real best way to play bumper smash: turning knockback to 2x
Remember when peaches side special was an actual explosion instead of that stylized heart crap?
i knew a few of these, but only got reminded of them when watching.
I knew about: 20, 16, 15, 9, 8, 6, 5
I've heard about: 19, 14
@13:30 - Maybe the term "factory default" could help you here?
Technically, Smash 3ds was the first game to have a pause menu.
A YELLOW TEAM FINALLY I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG
And the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day...
oh boy I can't wait for the next sunshine vid, great video btw
Another small, nice change: Stamina is now included in the normal "Smash" mode and thus can be played with stocks. Also, you can choose any Stamina value between 1 and 999kp for your match.
The metriod weakness was actually shown of in a direct
Yoshi the broshi I always have mad trouble fighting Metroids since they’re probably one of the most resilient assist trophies, but one time I threw a Freezie at one and it got OHKO’d. Which I thought was a very nice detail.
Your voice while towards the end of the video, it was beautiful
One neat little feature I like is that you have about half a second to press B to cancel a stage selection, I wish they had that for the character select too.
Ironically the only thing I never noticed was something you mentioned in passing. Somehow I never realized there was no challenge for beating classic with every character.
I can think of a reason new names being the original default controls is a good thing. If you're playing locally with friends who like the regular default controls, they can easily make a name and get them without having to go and manually change everything back and hope they didn't forget something.
Character specific list sound awesome
This channel is so underrated.
After being recommended 26 different videos about how to "spike" correctly, CZcams finally suggested some quality smash ultimate content. Nice video, but if assist trophy selection were in, the only change I'd make is remove Rathalos.
Not gonna lie. The first 15 seconds actually blew my mind.
True. Been trying to figure out myself.
I'd love to see you do a character specific changes list!
Wow, a lot of these I specifically looked for and definitely did not find..
As a semi-serious professional player (as in, I play in tournaments, but never anywhere higher than like, local leagues), I love seeing these little changes from a casual player's standpoint. It's a nice bit of insight.
I knew all of these ... After I watched the video
4:38 - But it's a _Möbius Strip,_ man.
For sure, but all that's required for something to be a "figure eight" is to form the shape of a number 8, which Mario Circuit clearly does as a reference to the game title.
My favorite little change is that starting a 1v1 match on Final Destination starts characters near the middle of the stage rather on opposite ends. No more running across the whole stage to stop Samus from charging her neutral B or anything like that. Now if only Pokemon Stadium could pick up on that habit.
"And you can play an entire match in frame-by-frame, super duper slow motion."
Except when someone uses a Final Smash
Major props to HotHEad. He's been my sidekick winning all of my spirit challenges for me. lol
I love the intro!
Love your videos. Keep up the good work
The hot head change was applied to the bombchu, made me place it down more since it didn't just run off the side anymore =b
My favorite change is probably while you are charging a smash attack if it can be angled you can change the angle of the attack while you while you are charging.
That was in smash 4 as well. I think almost every character can do it now instead of most like before, but it's not brand new.
@@kingmeprime I was not aware it was in 4!
For the default default, you could call it the no-name default, as that’s what the game calls that preset: no-name. So making a new name, the controls for it are set to the default no-name controls. You could also call it true default, which I like.
"Are there any changes in Ultimate that mean a lot to you?"
King K. Rool is in it. :P
Awesome video!
i noticed all these changes but never really took huge notice until now
Your editing and jokes always give me such a good laugh!
10:00 I'm thinking "All these are about items. Finally gonna talk about training mode!" 10 seconds later...
A fact about the weird stage-specific Assist Trophies: Alucard cannot spawn in the Wii Fit Studio stage. It’s probably because vampires have a weakness to mirrors in some vampire lore.
The hammer challenges were a neat change... except the only challenges worth hammering you can't hammer lol
Everyone seems to be mentioning Alucard in Wii Fit Studio, so I'll mention something different but similar. Alucard can actually appear in Fountain of Dreams despite the water giving a reflection... And Alucard actually has a reflection on this stage.
An excellent video of the utmost in quality.
This is how many times he said default on number 9
↓
It is amazing that you have 17K subs with only 14 videos. Goes to show Quality beats over quantity. Congrats dude
When people ask me what I want to do next year I guess I can just say I have 19/20 vision
The only ones I didn't know already was the POW block chain and Bob-Ombs no longer doing self damage.
I think the bob-omb shouldn’t damage it’s user, because it’s already hard enough to hit your opponent with it.
Particular, I love your personality. You make each video very fun to rewatch. I know you're going to get more subs and become bigger. You're doing great! Always keep going, and listen to any feedback you get, be it negative or positive. Constrictive criticism has plenty of value, it's there to help you grow.
Anyhow, I'll definitely be there for your next videos, and I'll be rewatching your old ones too!
Going into the video
"I'm not gonna know any of these"
Me after the video
"OMG I KNEW ALL OF THEM!
12/20 of them that I knew. If I didn't know all of one I didn't count it. Also, I noticed with the last one is that they buffed the general damage and knock back of that item. Came in handy in World of Light.
