What makes Dudley such a strong villain is his tactics - sabotage, gaslighting, and emotional manipulation and abuse. He's so effective at what he does that, for a time, he even has Bear convinced that things are indeed his own fault, leaving him, in his own words, "muddled in the radiator". To the bitter end, he refuses to admit to wrongdoing, insisting that surviving scrap justified his actions. He even went so far as to threaten The Fat Controller at the end - something Diesel never did.
Something else remarkable about the Dudley arc is the character growth in Henry. Previously, without bothering to check the facts, he believed Diesel's lies about Duck, only to become himself the victim of Diesel's lies later (something the Allcroft TV adaptation should have acknowledged). When he hears from Donald about what's been happening, instead of mindlessly siding with Dudley, he sides with Bear, his friend since the events of "Super Rescue", and urges Donald to do likewise. Upon returning from the works, he rips into Gordon and James for rushing to judge Bear. The lessons he learned from Diesel's visit to Sodor stuck with him; pity the same couldn't be said for Gordon and James.

Dudley is an O2 designed by Gresley, the same person who gave the world Flying Scotsman and Mallard, yet no one fought to preserve a member of his class. He was just trying to get his rightful place alongside his luckier cousins. The choice of basis suits the character well.

Out of all the OCs to come out of this fandom, Dudley so far is my favourite, the way TheBuriedTruck constructed him makes him fit into the TTTE universe perfectly. Overall, I often find myself gravitate more towards TBT's stories than others, but that's not to say that other people make bad stories, on the contrary, they all make splendid stories. It's just that TBT has this certain style of writing that makes me really hooked onto it, if you know what I mean... I'm hoping of perhaps adapting his stories in the future, albeit in a different medium than Trainz or Trackmaster or whatever, in what though, I'm not sure yet...

I like both Thebogieboy's and Carson's versions of the Dudley arc.
Carson's version had very quick and great editing and the way the trucks bounced and crumpled together in part 2 was crazy good!
My favorite moments in Carson's adaptation was how whenever DCG12B reads Dudley's lines in his narration whenever he smiles he sounds like he's slowly going insane until the final part.
Some of my favorite and funny details in the arc are when Dudley snaps at Bear for "disturbing his sleep", Donald's reaction to Dudley questioning him about the faulty fuel tanker, Henry being the good guy towards James and Gordon, and Toad smiling throughout the whole confrontation between Sir Topham Hatt and Dudley and just says "Pleasant journeys Mr. Dudley! :)" with no sense of feeling uncomfortable unlike Donald and Bear.
1 thing that did confuse me in the arc was how in part 1 when Dudley was setting up the crash for Henry without no notice from any station cameras and if the guard or stationmaster was present or not.

What i found was a nice touch, is that Douglas came to help Bear, and that Henry was already wised up after a certain diesel had tricked the big engines.

I get the feeling those who consider Dudley "boring" feel that way because they can't stand a steam engine being portrayed in a bad light, therfor because they don't like a steam engine being a villian it's "boring" or "overused and bad."
I hate how the whole trope of "haha diesels suck steam engines better" in the show led to that mindset, especially considering I myself enjoy many diesels out there.
Dudley's story is very interesting though especially given the clear consequences of Dudley's actions on Sodor shown in Demons.
I really enjoy the fact that it's implied Dudley really did make it to Sodor as he wished, but in a much more cruel and twisted way, fitting for his unchanging attitude and refusal to back down even at the confrontation between him and Sir Topham Hatt.
An overall incredible story in my eyes and I think Awdry would say the same if he were still around.

I doubt Awdry would approve. And not just because of his own bias. The LNER O2s were gone by 1963, and the only 2-8-0 that could've realistically arrived was the LMS 8F.

@@pizzaplanettruck9761 You say that as if the C53/J70 class (Toby's basis) wasn't already obsolete and scrapped a whole year prior to his first book appearance.
There were many engines of the RWS Awdry based on models he actually owned prior to their book appearances too, with Duck being one really good example.
Awdry had owned his model of Duck since 1949, a whole 7 years prior to his first book appearance in 1956, the name "Duck" originated from the model too since it "waddled" when Awdry first bought it, so Awdry's children called him Duck and the name stuck even long after Awdry corrected the waddling issue.
I don't really see what your point is here given Awdry took inspiration for the engines from many places and not just exclusively what was or wasn't preserved, so in theory it's not all too unlikely for him to have made an O2 character had he continued working on the RWS.

Toby arrived in 1951. He was one of 10 of the J70s still in service then. My point is Dudley would've had to have either arrived in 1963 or before, or be found rusted in a scrapyard like in my HC to be an O2.

You have done a very spectacular presentation for the war baby indeed (Yes Dudley was built during WW2) Not only you mentioned on how he's the backbone of villains' characters from backstory and personality wise, but how he just wanted to live on longer to be the type that would take any high lengths to find a way that threatens him in his way to be gone for.

I really do think that Dudley is one of if not the most well-written fan characters the fandom has ever seen. I’m working on my own adaptation of the story now, and I’ll be the first to admit it’s… different to say the least. I love Dudley as a character because he’s a sort of sympathetic villain. Sure he’s evil and it’s satisfying when he gets caught, but you’ve also gotta feel bad for the guy. The main reason he did this was because he was scared of death, and honestly I’d want to get rid of diesels too if they were basically the reason I was about to die.

The Steamie Vs Diesel stories get me thinking about the two Japanese engines in the CGI Series, Steam Engine Hiro and Shinkansen Kenji. How interesting of a story would it be if after the two returned to Japan, Hiro saw that Steam and Diesel engines were gaining up on Kenji and his kind. Some engines would laugh at how the Shinkansen are made only to take passengers while others may insult them on the fact they need power lines to move. And when Kenji and his pals counter with the fact they’re currently the fastest engines in the world, the other engines just view it as them bragging. Maybe Hiro’s return and friendship with Kenji convinces some engines to change their minds. He is the Master of the Railway. Others on the other hand continue to be rude to the electric engines and it is this ironically Hiro who spearheads the effort to get the new guys integrated into Japan’s railway system.
Speaking of Hiro, how would you write a Railway Series Origin Story for him? How does he earn his title of Master of the Railway? Why is he sent to Sodor? How does he go missing for years?
Personally if I wrote such a story, Hiro would have been made in the mid-1930s and done something impressive or heroic to earn his title. Just before WW2 breaks out in Europe, the Northwestern Railway makes a deal with Hiro’s controller. Maybe engines are swapped or Hiro is sent to Sodor as a symbol of this new alliance. Despite trying to be friendly with the other engines, Hiro is shunned because of his nationality. Hiro’s life takes a tragic turn when he ends up being a victim of the Barrow Blitz in 1941. An engine stationed at Barrow is told to bring Hiro to Crovan’s Gate, but the engine has other ideas. They leave Hiro in a siding, not trusting the foreigner. At first the railway looks all over for Hiro as they wait for his parts to arrive from Japan. Then comes December of that year and war begins between the Allies and Japan. Hiro is left for dead, though the NWR’s board have to pressure Sir Topham Hatt. By the time the war is over, Hiro has been forgotten. It takes a few more years until he’s found by accident and repaired. The Japanese National Railway made a deal with British Railway and had Hiro stay on Sodor, then the Northwestern Region of BR, as a gift and symbol of the deal. Since all of Hiro’s old friends had died during the American bombings of Japan, Hiro has no serious ties with home.
But that’s just my version. How would you do it?

2:43 Hearing that Dudley is an O2, I did some digging to learn more. As it turns out based on my findings, Dudley has to be based on either an O2/3 or O2/4. As these variants had new side-windows on the cab and reduced mountings on top of the boiler, not to mention the O2/4s had their older boilers replaced with the 100A type boiler (The same ones used on the Thompson B1 4-6-0s). And Dudley matches most of these details.

It makes the deisel invert makes more sense as the class 08's were also common, it makes dudly being a steam version of Devious deisel even more on the nose. Both one in an endless clone army.

@@jordandorsett3106 I don't think he is, but I did for a bit until I realized the firebox was not an 8f/06 one. But I think it's a better parallel to devious deisel, as the unlucky tug stated in his rws book ranking, diesel is one of a million, just a bland member of a clone army, which is inforced more by his standard black livery, his lack of a visible number, and his lack of an actual name, just deisel. Then look at dudley if he was an 8f, just like the class 08, there were hundreds of 8fs (almost 900) so dudley is just a steam version of deisel, now him being a consolidation does not change much, exept the amount of siblings he has, to my knowledge the consolidations were not as plentiful, but I am not certain.

I am a huge fan of diesel locomotives and have some favorite characters of them, (Mavis, BoCo, Daisy, Salty, Paxton, Diesel Etc...) But I am really tired of the whole "Steam>Diesel" competition as it feels unjustified and unfair. I believe steam, diesel and even electric are both incredible and unique in their own way. The rivalry between the two was handled pretty decently in the Classic and Brenner Era (with the steamies accepting diesels and appreciating their hard-work and determination) but in the HIT Era, it was attrocous, the steamers and diesels go at teach others' throats as if they have been demonized. I will say this though I love the fact that CAE! had the balls to make the steamies and diesels both portrayed as neutral to each other. Fun fact, I use to take Thomas and the steam engines side because of his own regret and the diesels were scary to me, but now I began to grow closer to Diesel, Arry and Bert now that I see why they act aggressive, they're only trying to be acceppted by trying to work hard. And I really like that the fandom give this rivalry an fair balance especially with more creative freedom. Plus Dudley is a perfect example of how sometimes it's not always the "black and white stereotype" and not only does he insult diesels around him including Bear, but he also attempts to sabotage and harm them for his own survival. That makes me feel even more sympathetic for the diesels. The only problem is I wish that more people would see Diesels as more than just the "Soulless Monster Box on Wheels that Teriorizes Steam Engines Everywhere". Personally I'm one of the few that isn't fond of Dudley. It's not that a steam engine was a villain, but one in danger of being scrapped. If Dudley wasn't in danger of being scrapped, I would've been just fine. Depicting a steam engine that's in danger like that as a villain to me is tantamount to depicting someone fleeing from persecution as a villain. This is how Dudley is able to win sympathy. More traditional "bad" steam engines like Spencer or Alfred and Crovan weren't in danger and so don't get that luxury. And let's face it, there's NO WAY Awdry would allow Dudley in his books. At least not unless the alternate ending was used, and a different basis (the LNER O2s were long gone by 1968).

I remember when Richard was all the rage back in 2019-2020 but I believe Dudley is one of the best OCs ever made in the fandom for multiple reasons and you touched on a few of them. And as a fellow Consolidation fan, I agree with Based. I also think its pretty funny how Dudley made his debut not too long after Heljan announced their GNR O2 Tangoes in OO. I don't think I can understand why some people don't like Dudley saying he's basic. In what way exactly because there are nearly no other OC villains like him in the fandom. I can name maybe two others at most. Diesel is pretty much the closest in comparison and he is not an OC. And while there is a point with the amount of remakes made but that is be expected when you give others permission to adapt your stories. Even if I wasn't a GNR and Consolidation fan, I still believe I would've been a fan of Dudley from Day 1 for many reasons. I do a nitpick about Dudley being No. 63971 which the real O2 with this number was built in 1942 (Remember when Dudley mentioned in "Cannonball" how he survived wartime?) and withdrawn in December of 1962 with scrapping commencing at the Central Wagon Co. in Wigan in 1963 and Bear and Oliver were said to have been purchased in 1966-1967. His name is an old-fashion sounding name. Nothing threatening sounding or even special to be honest. It's an Old-English name. His face, on the other hand, is menacing straight away. It does give away some of his malicious character just by looking at his face but it's perfectly made to the point you just think he's a handsome fellow whose eyebrows slope too far down. And that's in addition to his slimy actions. Diesel was very cunning, yes, but you must remember that he only destroyed some points and old trucks out of his own inexperience and ego before he decided to seek revenge on Duck. He said the right things to the right people and let everyone else do the rest. Dudley, on the other hand, is also cunning but does not regard safety as part of his schemes. Damaging coaches and causing a fuel fire is serious damage to a safety record, a company's finances and a risk to any lives present. It's clear Dudley would resort to straight up murder if it ever meant having the cards in his favor. Victor Tanzig better not touch him!

I am aware that Wildnorwestor has brushed most of it off but I still think Dudley is one character I do not want in the Stories of Sodor canon because of this. And I also know that Tanzig voiced Dudley in a Trainz series Sodor Stooges. If well written fan characters like Dudley or Richard appear in comedic parody series where the canon is not in line with the established lore of the RWS or the Classic era of the TVS, I don't care as its easy to ignore when you look at it through that lens. Things just exist in those series with little to no explanation. With all the lore and world building in the 30 year timeline that Victor Tanzig's series has established, there is no decent way Tanzig will be able to successfully write Dudley as the sinister character he is to fit in his series. I'm confident on my stance here.

What does a King Midas mean?

    • @lukechristmas3951

@@pizzaplanettruck9761 From Greek Mythology, King Midas was granted a wish by Dionysus where anything he touched would turn into gold. At first, King Midas loved this new power but it soon turned sour when all the food he tried to eat turned to gold too. The wish became a curse. In some versions of the myth, King Midas died of starvation because the gold touch was never lifted. That is what I mean by King Midas; something that starts out great but becomes bad over time.

Yeah, Dudley is an S-tier OC… but not SS tier like my boi Richard!!!
Having said that, why not put two and two together? I say that because my adaptation of Dudley’s storyline will also have Richard’s intertwined with it.

3:31-4:03 I agree with you when comes to the diesels portrayal in this franchise(Since I'm a bit of a diesel fan to). While I still enjoy the steam vs diesel conflict from time to time its' gotten to the point where its flat out predictable. Diesel engine comes to Sodor, bad mouths steam engines, steam engines get angry, diesel does a job and breaks down, steam engine comes to the rescue, diesel is told off by STH and leaves Sodor, rinse and repeat. This is an aspect of Wilbert Awdry's books that I didn't like, because he portrays the diesel engines in a very black and white matter with bad ones having the same traits as arrogant, racist and weak willed. While the good ones are kind, generous and a bit of pushovers. The Hit Era was especially egregious when came to the steam/diesel conflict, because the steam engines acted more like jerks than the diesels. That's why I'm glad Thomas YTs like T1E2H3, Victor Tangiz, dcg12b, LWP and Richard try to put more of a grey area when it comes to this feud.
Heck Hero of the rails despite not being the best special out there, made a Steam engine the antagonist, an aspect of the movie that a lot of people liked.

You're not the only one who thinks that amigo, I am a huge fan of diesel locomotives and have some favorite characters of them, (Mavis, BoCo, Daisy, Salty, Paxton, Diesel Etc...) But I am really tired of the whole "Steam>Diesel" competition as it feels unjustified and unfair. I believe steam, diesel and even electric are both incredible and unique in their own way. The rivalry between the two was handled pretty decently in the Classic and Brenner Era (with the steamies accepting diesels and appreciating their hard-work and determination) but in the HIT Era, it was attrocious, the steamers and diesels go at teach others' throats as if they have been demonized. I will say this though I love the fact that CAE! had the balls to make the steamies and diesels both portrayed as netural to each other. And I really like that the fandom give this rivalry an fair balance especially with more creative freedom. The only problem is I wish that more people would see Diesels as more than just the "Soulless Monster Box on Wheels that Teriorizes Steam Engines Everywhere". Awdry take a few notes, #Dieselivesmatter
