Unlike modern style tuning pegs, where you pass the string through a circular hole, horizontally through the peg, vintage tuners have a hole in the top of the peg that you feed the string down. It's a fairly subtle difference, but does mean a different approach is required. These tuners look something like this: (See website)
Another thing to bear in mind is that this guitar has a different bridge to the previous one we looked at. This is a Tune-o-matic style bridge, a type of 'hard-tail' or 'fixed' bridge commonly found on Gibson style guitars. Another guitar that commonly has a fixed bridge is the Telecaster (although not usually a Tune-o-matic!). The other main type is a 'Tremolo' style bridge, commonly found on Stratocasters. Make sure you have identified which type of bridge you have (bearing in mind these are the main 2 types and there are a lot of others out there!):
Tremolo style bridge
Hardtail style bridge
With vintage tuners, there is a slightly different process, as shown below:
1. Pull the string through the bridge and up through the tuning pegs. Make sure it is nice and taut.
2. Allow roughly three tuners length of extra string after the tuning peg. Cut off the remaining string.
3. Feed the string downwards into the tuner and then pull back around.
4. Start winding the string whilst still keeping the tension to get a good wrap around the peg.
5. Cut the excess string with a pair of wire cutters.

Hey guys, thanks for the video! I'm a little embarrassed to say that I've been spoiled by locking tuners so when I picked up a Jazzmaster last week I knew I'd need to get a little refresher on how to restring it. This video was perfect, thorough without getting rambly or repetitive, very helpful. Thanks!!
Some advice, show more close up shots of the tech's hands and what he is doing and very few if none of all of the interviewer. This is about changing strings and not about him.

I usually just use 2.5 tuner length on these since i don't like too much pressure over the nut.
easiest way to stop the strings from popping out while restringing is to push the string down with a toothpick in the tuner hole while you wind it up.

Good video. I like to have all the tuner in the same direction ie slots paralell to the strings initially. Makes it a bit easier.

This is so confusing with the science of a fender strat tremolo..
Everywhere including fender says to only ( measure two tuner lengths not three ) they said it's better for staying in tune.
I would think three would be better but they say it's not good to have too many.

For these, you'll want to pre-cut the strings to achieve the proper length and desired amount of winds. Pull the sixth string (tautly, remember) to the fourth key and cut it. Pull the fifth string to the third key and cut it. Pull the fourth string between the second and first keys and cut it. Pull the third string nearly to the top of the headcap and cut it. Pull the second string about a 1/2" (13 mm) past the headcap and cut it. Finally, pull the first string 1 1/2" (38 mm) past the top of the headcap and cut it. Insert into the center hole in the tuning key, bend and crimp to a 90-degree angle, and wind neatly in a downward pattern, being careful to prevent overlapping of the strings.
Thanks for this. Just used this technique to put a set of strings on a 2019 US Strat. Easiest string change ever. Might be doable without a winder but definitely recommend using.

Seems strange to show Fenfer style vintage tuners with a tunomatic bridge 🤔
Eh, it doesn't work though, does it? I'm replacing my high E and you can't just stick it in the slot and put pressure on it because the string immediately pops out of the hole. Maybe next time have the camera close on what you're doing, and stop cutting away to the guy talking nonstop.
E string is an absolute nightmare. Keeps popping out. It's trial and error.
I hate my Fender brand vintage tuners(70 bucks bought 70 bucks installed on a 50 dollar Bullet Strat. Tight fit). They constantly slip . I feel I'm putting much more tension on the string than we see in this video. I should have bought locking tuners. These tuners should have a rough surface that sort of bites into the string.You measure and then you kink. Are you cutting at the kink?
