It's better if you think of it as a mixolydian scale. This particular scale looks like it's derived from the major pentatonic scale but using that flat 7th instead of the 6th and the 4th instead of the 5th. I can be wrong about which notes are being left out but I think I'm pretty sure which ones he's using to highlight the mixolydian vibe (the flat 7th and the perfect 4th)

Mixolydian starts and ends on 5th note of the relative major scale. There's no note changes. A Major would be E mixolydian.
