  • In this Kyma tutorial video we will take a step-by-step look at one way to design sample based "cinematic" sound effects and/or ambiences, how to generate and control them in realtime and manipulate/adjust them in the process using the multigrid environment in Kyma.
Kyma users can follow along with the same set of samples from the Kyma sound library or use any other samples. Also, if you don't have an iPad with the Kyma Control app you can still build this sound the same way and either 'roll the dice' in the VCS or click the 'PenDown' buttons in the VCS to generate the triggers- not quite the same experience but still effective.
    REVISION:
A better option for the Scale parameter field in the Multisample might be !AmpLow (make sure to add it to the Replicator's SpecialEvents as well if you want individual control over the level of each sample). !Scale generates a range of -2 to 2 which is a bit awkward although no harm will come from it while !AmpLow generates a 0 to 1 default range.
Also, this way of designing these types of sounds can be applied to other environments so even if you're not using Kyma it could spark an idea for you.

    Hey!
Great tutorial, so many useful tips and tricks! You mentioned in video that it can be used without tablet, can you please provide some explanation on how to do that?
    Thank you in advance!

Hey, thanks! One option to perform the sound without a tablet would be to change the !PenDown to !KeyDown which would make the sound triggerable from a MIDI keyboard. It all depends on how you want to perform and control the sound. There's tons of options! If you poke around some of my other videos you will probably get some ideas on the various ways to perform a Kyma sound. Let me know how it goes and if you have any other questions.

      Thank you, it worked!
      I will check it!:)
In meantime, do you recommend getting Wacom tablet or Ipad for Kyma. Also, what model would you suggest?

Great! Keep me posted. Choosing between a Wacom tablet and an iPad for Kyma control, again, is a personal decision (they are different from each other with little overlap). In my experience, the Wacom offers a much better "pen" and can include the z-axis (pressure) while the iPad cannot. The iPad can give you other features though, for instance displaying the VCS. If you were to get a Wacom that has touch capabilities you could use your fingers on the Wacom too! Kyma sees that information as !Finger instead of !Pen. I'd put some thought into what you want to do, and continue to poke around my videos and others' videos to see what's possible. I have a Wacom Intuos Pro PTH651 and I can recommend it.

When I map any parameter in multi grid how do I save it so that Kyma will remember the mappings.
say I want to map pen down rate 1 to 10 to the Y axis affecting the pitch or any parameter for that matter

I think I figured it out whatever parameter you want mapping to X or Y you scale by !PendownX or !PendownY so they are constant

Which system are you running that has 8 DSPs? :D
