I hit rock bottom a few months ago with alcohol and finally went to a rehab facility where I attended AA groups. They also discouraged or just dismissed medication and outside therapy. It seemed useless from the start, everyone pretty much just trying to one-up each other with their own stories. And none of these people, if they were telling the truth, even drank as much as I did on a daily basis. I got out of rehab and made a call to my doctor and laid out all my mistakes made while drunk and my daily intake. He told me not to be ashamed, took out his pad and wrote me a prescription for Naltrexone. Just like that, I've been sober for one month after years of not going one day without a buzz. I start meetings with a psychiatrist next week just for support. AA is a joke and a narcissistic social club, that's it.

In my opinion that is ridiculous.. I had a multitude of people asking for number as well. I didn't receive any calls from them at all. The only person from AA that actually picked up when I called went on to talk about herself for 3 hours on the phone, and occasionally asked about my life. The person who runs one of the meetings I go to wears really strange purple dresses like they did in that one mormon fundamentalist church. the first time I saw her walking in a distance with that outfit on.. I couldn't believe how much she resembled a cult stereotype woman. And apparently.. she is pimping out women inside the AA group to male members for societal control and power of the group.

I've gone to NA for 10 years. I fell in with a bad crowd of elitists that were like a high school social click back in 2019. They told me if I didn't get off my subs, which I had been doing good on at the time, that they wouldn't help or accept me and I wasn't clean if I was taking them, in spite of the fact that my life was stable. Being the people pleaser that I was at the time, I stupidly went along with it, and almost died as a result, and actually lost my mind for a good few years. What a ride. They would also talk shit about each other behind each others' backs and reveal personal shit about other members. Today, I'm much more careful and the only reason I still go to those meetings are to help new people coming in. DO NOT LET ANYONE IN THAT PROGRAM CONVINCE YOU TO GO OFF YOUR MEDS THEY TRULY DONT GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT YOU OR YOUR WELL BEING. If you die as a result, they'll say 'he/she didn't want it enough' and get over it and move on with their lives in like a day or two. They need a make a psychopathic sickfuck's anonymous for people like this they are truly some of the most disgusting types of people I've ever met.
I was at a meeting last night with two newcomers there, and there were a few douchebags with 2 years plus talking during the readings and asked to be quiet, didn't give a fuck and talked to the point of being obnoxious. When asked to help two female newcomers by running the first step table, none of the ladies stepped up, so I volunteered to do it. It disgusts me that these people have been given one of the greatest blessings imaginable, something only 1% of addicts are blessed enough to get (1 year+ recovery and clean time); that they had people who helped them, and all they care about is measuring their dicks and being popular and accepted I don't even usually care but if there are newcomers that can't even hear the readings b/c you people want to socialize it really is a display of selfishness, lack of awareness and narcissism.
Ironically, they're some of the most insecure people in that program the ones that seem the happiest and most accepted and popular and people like me who can see right through people and know a thing or two about psychology can see thru all their masks easily and the insecurity that these people give off is mind-blowing. It really is a dick measuring contest at the end of the day for about nine-tenths of people in there. I watch everybody in that program to see who's got their shit straight and who's working a solid program, putting the principles before the personalities, and I'll tell you, about 90% of people talk the good talk but don't walk the good walk. I've seen people with 20+ years clean like this, who want to tell you everything but can't be taught anything. It's truly sad the court system throws unsuspecting people into 12-step programs because they don't know how else to help them and they see it as a 'one size fits all' solution to a group of people they view as problematic.

It is clearly stated in AA literature that following the advice of medical professionals is ALWAYS advisable. That extends to prescribed medications. I have been sober and going to AA for years, and nobody has ever asked me about my medications, including my sponsor. This is a twisted misrepresentation of AA and other recovery groups that borders on slander. It's really sad to see. AA has saved millions of lives and will continue to for a long time.

I am currently deprogramming from AA. Here in Toowoomba Queensland, the AA members are dogmatic to the point where they insist that you do as they want. I went to meetings and would open up with "Hello, my name is Michael and I once had a drinking problem" or I once suffered from Alcohol Use Disorder. They hounded me and after 8 years kicked me out of the group for not saying I was an alcoholic. This is just one example, as I would also not stand for "The serenity prayer" that they insisted on. I once shared that I had half a beer whilst on holiday with family and that nothing happened as a consequence, their looks from the floor could have scared off Dr Hyde! As was stated in the video, a 5-10 percent success rate is nothing to brag about, but they do it anyway, they seem to think they are so special and above facts, science, and normal common sense.

I have friends who don’t drink and manage their pain pills just fine. What’s sad is that they are afraid they will be shunned from AA just because they take the pain meds, be told they don’t have a program (what the fuck does that mean anyway)….. blah blah blah. I was in AA for 11 years, been out since 2018. I still feel like there’s something wrong with me for leaving, I’m a failure, I’ll never have a good life, I’m doomed without them, maybe I should go back, etc. I didn’t think I needed reprogramming help until I saw your videos. I do need help and support to break away mentally and emotionally. When I tell people I no longer go I always start off by saying, “ I’m sure it’s me; I am the problem and should have found better meetings…”. I went to meetings in NorCal that were highly influenced by the Pacific Group and Clancy followers.

AA has done "fairgaming" to a lot of actors and musicians in LA.
I read the old AA book "Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers" and I think that was the best time for AA and it's gone waaay downhill unfortunately since then.
Blue butterfly is so right about the parallels with Scientology. Scientology changes perception of memories with hypnosis in auditing and AA changes perception of memories through 4th step and 10th step.

When I was incarcerated, part of my sentence was mandatory AA meetings. Years later, I am still going and still sober. It's not for everyone but much of what this video is describing, I have not seen myself. For some people, sobriety takes a lot of work, and it helps to have like-minded people there for support. If it is a cult, it doesn't seem to have a leader, and it doesn't require any money you don't have (1$ is typical). I also don't have to believe or do anything I don't feel like. It is clearly stated that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. You can't get kicked out even if you are disagreeable. I feel like this channel is intentionally trying to distort the message of AA and deny people the recovery they desperately need to survive. I can't imagine why. It makes no sense. ps. I have been smoking weed for years. It's called AA, not WA. I talk about my challenges in sobriety, not my weed smoking. Yes. Everyone knows.

My whole issue with the 12 steps In general is the idea that your gonna be sick the rest of your life and can never be cured. Isn’t that sort of self defeating? I went to a Christian rehab early last year and they taught that the “opposite of addiction is connection”. I totally agree with that statement but they still pushed the 12 steps on me.
I remember one class where one would come give a lesson on the 12 steps and every time I’d ask a question about my disagreements, he would use this word salad or answer my question with an another question. I’m currently going to therapy and was recently diagnosed with PTSD. She pretty much told me that the only way to heal is to stop stuffing my emotional pain and let the tears out. But that’s the issue, I’ve been stuffing emotions for so long that it’s hard to get out.

And yes, sexual harassment and even assault is a big problem in these twelve step meetings. I'm not talking about asking women for their numbers, I'm talking friends' gfs or women have told me that there were guys that would do some really devious shit like kiss their necks in the parking lot and shit. Lot of lonely ass people in there. Couple that with narcissism, sociopathy, and manipulation. Women do that shit to guys to. I know guys who slept with women with years clean when they were newcomers, and that shit ain't ok not one bit. They only talk about the women but it can happen to both men and women. Ppl look at men like 'luckiest guy ever' but really what's lucky about hooking up with a dressed up trash can who looks amazing in makeup but liked a used jizz rag without it who then breaks the guy's heart and leaves him high and dry and then he goes out relapses and dies.

I would say people do get forced to go, if you attend a few times and then like most addicts you don't have many friends or family so you fill that hole with meetings and you developed friendships through AA or NA then yes it is forcing in a way because those friendships are based around AA or NA so I fail to see how people can't see that in a way through loneliness there is forced attendance.

I cleaned up in a smaller city. I am in NA. I think that the first members of a fellowship effect how that group of people will be in the years to come. They train the newcomers. I consider myself fortunate to have found the people I did. I have witnessed bullying in the rooms, and probably been a part of it as well. You never know how your words will effect someone. Its been 16 years that I have been in the program, and the thing that I have come to believe is it is about the dope. That is why people go there. I have found that people want to treat all there aliments through the 12 steps.
One of the readings in NA states," Only in what you want to do about your problem, and how we can help". The newcomer tells the group what we can do to help. I have seen some members reject this idea. When I went to an AA meeting someone told me to," Sit down, shut up, and hold on". I prefer the NA message, personally.
I have wanted to leave NA many times. I think this is because I am an introvert, and meeting new people on a consistent basis makes me anxious.
One of the Old timers said that NA is the last house on the block, and that is why we don't shun people for there past. They get a chance to change the direction of there life.
