CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The prince (Dougray Scott) proposes to Danielle (Drew Barrymore) and sweeps her off her feet.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Andy Tennant directed this Cinderella variant. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance.

One thing I love about this scene is how the shoe moment is repurposed not to illustrate her “perfect” fit for him or the small size of her feet, but it’s about him humbling himself to the woman he loves after making a mistake. He lowers himself to the ground and places a shoe on her foot. An action that is so intimate and down-to-earth. It’s such a beautiful way to show his love, and the joy on their faces when the embrace afterward is absolutely heart-melting.
Christina Meyer that was a perfect explanation! God bless, that made my day haha. It's not about finding his perfect other, but about laying down his pride for her, willing the good of the other above himself.
Christina Meyer beautifully written!
Well said!
💕💕💕🙌
Well said!
I love that she rescued herself before Henry got there.
ashley drayton me too
ashley drayton Me too!!!
That awkward moment when Henry said he came to rescue her and her eacyions always made me laugh.
ashley drayton that shows how truly strong she is without a man's help
@@mjparadero7046 why what's wrong with her rescuing herself? no one even said anything is wrong with being helped in times of need. go somewhere else.
It amazes me how Danielle continuously referred to herself as a "peasant". In reality she is of "noble blood". Her mother was a Countess & I think her father was a Baron. Good example of how someone can treat you a certain way for years & at some point you start to believe it even though it's not true.
@SarcasMiss No matter the technicalities, being born into or married into, Danielle was still a child of the noble class. Her stepmother reduced her to a lower class level that she was not born into. Danielle grew to accept & believe that was her place when it wasn't. I think you missed the point of my comment
@@JMac7395 you can’t reduce her into a lower class.
Danielle wasn't noble, and her mother wasn't a countess. Rodmilla criticizes her at the end for "turning her mother into a comtesse." Her dad was an untitled landowner. Calling herself a "peasant" is still not right though. She was a commoner yes, but not a peasant. They were definitely middle class.
I remember that i always thought that Cinderella should never have been demoted to a servant, because that was her father's house so she had rights. Or like in this movie, Danielle demoted as a peasant...but when you analize it, this is correct. Because in this case, both parents, mother and father died, so she was an orphan and Rodmilla didn't take her as her daughter, ( i mean she could'nt gave her a noble title) but she did take her as her *servant* for her purposes....so this is the reason why Danielle calls herself *peasant* because she is not noble, she doesn't hace a title...
Out of all the Cinderella movies that I've watched over the years this one with Drew Barrymore is the best I'm seriously going to see if I can find it online and watch it tomorrow
If Disney would stop the live action remakes and just make movies like this.
orlandobabe They are going action remakes of Dumbo,
The Lion King (2019)
Aladdin (2019)
Christopher Robin (2018),
Mary Poppins Returns (2018),
Mulan (2020) or around November 2, 2018.
The Little Mermaid (?)
Kim Possible (2019)
That would make it technically a remake too lol
Mari Hillestad I earned rumors that Disney will make a live-action of Dragon Ball Z
Venus D21 no
Mari Hillestad boo on all of them, it is a waste of a lot of things. It seems stupid and pointless to make such predictable films. God! It’s boring!
“I kneel before you not as a prince, but as a man in love. But I would feel like a King, if you, Danielle de Barbarac, would be my wife.” Omggg that is a beautiful quote. 🥰😍😍
Right?! Talk about a grand marriage proposal lol.
“Say it again.” “I’m sorry” “No, the part where you said my name”. 😭😭 She didn’t need an apology, she already forgave him before she even saw him again because she loved him.. she wanted/yearned for him to just accept her as she is, to be fully known and yet truly loved. True love. Fav movie of all time for me.
I cried my eyes out at this part in the theater. Saw it over and over again cause at the time I had noone and I yearned for what they had.
I've watched this movie at least 3x's I just luv it❤
More than 10 times...
Love this movie
“Please, Danielle?”
“Say It again?”
“I’m sorry..”
“No..The part where you said my name.”
I love that part. And when he says her name again, she gives off a sigh of relief, like she knows she doesn't have to pretend to be someone else anymore.
caitlinjane92 tell me about it
It’s honestly so attractive when guys use your name.
@@elizabethgrant1517 IKR?!!
😭😭
I loved where she carried him out of the woods. Smart girl.
"You can have anything you can carry! "
@@brittneyhonaker3795 🤣
I love this so much.
At every turn he is expecting her to condem him, be angry with him, reject him. He feels immense guilt for what he has done to her and expects her to react in a very particular way. Then at every turn she surprised him by doing something completely different. The true elation you see in him when she does this, each and every time, is beautiful.
She's putting herself down as much as possible because she doesn't feel she's worthy. But he won't go anywhere. You can see, however, that if she were to reject him he would leave her alone and respect her wishes. It would tear him apart but he would.
This movie set the bar ridiculously high for romance in my opinion.
joisey10 PREACH. Every bit of that plays out so expertly onscreen.
No. Set it exactly where it belongs.
@@Wednesdaywoe1975 huh?
I hope they will have the reunion of the cast of the movie Ever After in OWN or whatsoever. Its a beatiful version of the Cinderella without magic!
@@joisey10 Meaning the bar for romance was set exactly where it should be. That this is the kind of relationship all couples should strive for together.
"I kneel before you not as a Prince but as a man in love" 😍😍
Never happens in reality
@@brighida100 true
This is such a beautiful scene. He is dressed as a prince with not a spec of dirt on him and she is dressed as a servant covered in grime in front of him for the “first time”, yet he is humbling himself for the woman he loves, desperate to speak as equals. The look on his face when she calls him “Your Highness” at 0:57 tugs at my heart every time. “The name is Henry, if you don’t mind.” Despite the contrast of the scene, Henry speaks of her being “his match in every way.” This will forever be my favorite scene.
I know and then takes off her dirty shoe I can’t 😭😭😭
"desperate to speak as equals" you worded that beautifully. This scene really is perfect.
People don't like to call me by my name. I reference this scene.
At 1:55 the face that Henry makes when she says yes is one of pure joy. That is one of the reason I love this movie so much. They have so much raw emotion, it is absolutely beautiful.
Yes ♥It's so magical.
1:46 is so cathartic and powerful. It's not that she's just emotional because of his proposal, but the way she recoils it's like she's only finally realising just how harsh a life she's been dealt up until this point. In the face of how well Prince Henry treats her here, she's realising this is the love which she'd been denied for years. Only now is she finally able to process the full extent of her grief for everything that was so cruelly stripped away from her. In this moment, all the pain and misery which she's just learned to put a wall up against inside in order to survive, here she lets that wall down and it all finally dawns on her. She'd never feel sorry for herself, she just had to get on with the bad situation she was in - but here, now knowing she's finally going to be free - she sees it for what it was - she acknowledges that deep well of pain and lets it all out. Honestly, you can't have a happy ending unless you know true sadness and the balance they strike here in this scene is perfect because of it. Great scene!
Thank you for this analogy!
That's what I love about this movie it really humanizes the Cinderella story in such a powerful way
Yup! Well said! 😭😭
One of the few cinderella adaptations that had NO magic involved.
Well, some would argue that love is magical.
PrincessA ...and didnt need any ;)
I like to think Leonardo Da Vinci had some form of magic.
he had science can that be form magic
The best next to the slipper and the rose.
This Cinderella is so much better than the "original" just for the fact that she's independent. She saves herself, she goes after what she wants and she can actually stand up even when the evil step sisters were being really mean and wanted her mother's outfits
"step-sister" not "step-sisters" Jacqueline was an innocent, powerless bystander.
Shi au pair I love this movie 😍😍
who became powerful on her own ^^ (Jacqueline)
Kee Leicthle She and Danielle was kind to each other and becomes friends or sister in end. Jacqueline was bullied and inord by her mother and sister.
Does that really make it better, or just different? Why pit the two characters against each other when they're not in competition? The animated Disney Cinderella rather reminds me of Jacqueline from Ever After, and she and Danielle shared a great friendship, not a rivalry. I'm aware that it's the contemporary fashion to only praise women who can 'do it all' (which IMO is no better than only praising dainty delicate women, it's still exclusivity), but I prefer to keep narratives broad and varied, because people are broad and varied.
I've seen this movie so many times, but I still tear up when Danielle starts crying in disbelief and joy. She's lost SO much - her beloved father, her dignity, the love of a mother or sisters, her youth to brutal labor and slavery. Finally, she gets her moment, to be loved, wanted, cherished, and special
Best Cinderella movie ever made, better than Disney's versions!!!!
I agree, better then the live action remake.
Agreed
Daniella Valadez indeed, unfortunately in that century the prince would never be able to marry a commoner.
Nope just make them their mistress.
Way better by far!
The best adaptation of Cinderella's story unfortunately forgotten.
This is literally my favorite movie that's not an action film. I could watch it over and over again
Wait a minute... Her mother was a French countess, and her father had a pretty sweet house and some land, so he was at least a baron, if nothing else. Danielle was NOT a peasant, she was just an orphan.
I thought the same. If her mum was a countess (as Danielle says her mother was Comtesse Nicole de Lancret) then her father must presumably have been a Comte (i.e. an earl), which means Danielle must have been Lady Danielle at the very least. So I'm pretty confused about why Rodmilla refers to her as 'common'
Maybe she managed to fabricate the will or something -- I don't know. Rodmilla was SUCH a bitch sometimes it was was very unnerving. Just cements the whole thing about this being a story of child abuse...
Rodmilla does proclaim that Danielle lied, having the nerve to turn her mother in a comtesse. I would assume, at the least, her father Auguste was a Lord? By the size of his land. But could have easily just been a common merchant or trader with no title.
Of course, yet Rodmilla could easily have just been attempting to make Danielle look even worse. Lying to a monarch is treason, so she probably wanted to make herself the more innocent party, despite lying herself, probably to draw attention away from said lie.
True. I assume though, that Nicole was likely common with how excited the others were about a Baroness in the household. So I assume by their thrill they were not use to entertaining masters/mistresses of nobility.
I love Dougray's changes of emotion: he's worried she'll say no (1:51) but is overjoyed at her yes (1:55)
That's some good acting.
This movie has been in my top five favorite movies since I was a little girl. This was done so well, especially the casting. Dougray Scott and Drew Barrymore had such dynamic on screen chemistry.
I can’t imagine a better role model for children(especially girls) than Danielle. I think this is the best Cinderella adaptation ever. Drew Barrymore kicked this out of the park. I love her. And such a phenomenal cast.
She knew no one was coming to save her, so she saved herself.
GO TO HELL. THE DISNEY VERSION GAVE HOPE AND COURAGE TO A LOT OF PEOLE.
Drew Berrymore was the Perfect Cinderella in this movie, especially her Prince Charming Dougray Scott, did such a Great job in this movie. I read on an interview that Drew & Dougray, read books, watched films, & studied their characters perfectly and they really got into their character for this movie. They were very acknowledgeable of the Era in this movie, they did a Remarkable job playing these characters. I luv this movie for 23 yrs now, I can quote every line in this movie❤️❤️❤️❤️
👏🤩
I love this movie. I love how she rescued herself before he tried rescuing her.
I love their relationship so much! It's so raw and real, it feels like something that could happen in real life. Danielle and Henry really do complete each other and complement each others strengths and weaknesses, I hope I can find that kind of love someday.
This is my favorite Cinderella adaptation because they actually do something different with it
When I first watched this I was amazed about how instead of demanding an apology from Danielle he asks for her forgiveness. All I could think was what an amazing man.
I’m ashamed to say this but I discovered this movie only this year 😭 BUT it has instantly become my favorite Cinderella movie and top 5 favorite films. There’s just something so refreshing and raw about this movie💙
I like how in this adaption they actually spent time together and hung out rather than meeting and hen getting married
"I kneel before you not as a prince, but as a man in love." Gahhh that's so sweet!!! This is literally one of the best Cinderella movies out there ♥Definitley one of my comfort moves. Drew Barrymore is so gorgeous.
Yup it's sweet.
This soundtrack is one of the most beautiful and perfectly suited to this movie ❤️
The best thing Amazon's 2021 Cinderella did, was remind everyone of this superior adaptation
She protect
She attack
But most importantly
She got her shoe back
I love this movie so much it's not even funny. This scene is so unbelievably beautiful, this will and will always be the perfect version of Cinderella.
This movie is my *FAVOURITE* version of a Cinderella story, and that says a lot, considering how many films they are.
Drew was awesome in this movie.
The music is so perfect 😭
The fact gentlemen is that they lived!!!! I love this movie
I adore this movie. I love how she rescued herself. This Cinderella was brave and strong
My favorite Cinderella film ever. The magic is in the story and their performances. Great cast all around.
I’ve probably seen this movie hundreds of times, and I still cry at this part 😭❤️
One of my favorite movies of all time. I watched it over 100 times in a row when it came out on DVD.
This has to be my fav scene in this amazing movie!! I just love how he goes to her, knowing she is a peasant, still is in love with her!! Just awe!! I love good old fashion romance!! And when he says *i kneel before you not as a prince but as a man in love* 😱😱😱😭😭😭😭😭😭😍😍😍😍
“Say it again.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No… _the part where you said my name.”_
This is My Favorite Version of Cinderella.
one of the best movie proposals in movie history
This is the sweetest scene in a movie I think I've ever seen.
This film's an absolute masterpiece!
So Depressing that they don't have uplifting romantic movies anymore. 2020 you can't even get through 30 minutes of any movie without pornographic like love scenes.
Sadly true!!
Unfortunately true...
Pretty sad...
Hence why I keep coming back and forth to Pride and Prejudice and also another classics
B
can we just take a moment to appreciate the music in this scene? its so beautiful and adds so much emotion to an already emotional scene
This soundtrack is brilliant, I think this scene is maybe the closest thing to a perfectly scored scene 💞
Who knew Sean Ambrose was such a romantic? In all seriousness, though, Dougray Scott's performance here is great. I especially love it when he gives that smile and says his name is Henry.
1:53 the best part. The joyous smiles and the giggles of everlasting bliss. Pure happiness and love that means everything in that very moment.
I think this is the best of cinderella story i ever watched. And it also "logic" because there's no magic involved, the plot of her love with prince henry was flowing and heart warming..
This is definitely on my top 5 favorite movies list!❤
Best Cinderella ever but that shoe😂😂😂😂
Literally my top fave Cinderella movie.
I love this movie
HeyIt'sEmily me too!!!
The musical score was amazing.
The best Cinderella story ever told! 👏👏👏
I LOVE this movie. The only thing that upsets me is how quickly she let him off the hook.
This is still one of my absolute favorite movies EVER 😍😍😍
Best Cinderella ever.
at 7 this movie ruined me for every man
Yes! I agree
I’m a guy and it did the same for me
why?
Henry is so sweet and charming that men in real life won’t be that charming as they’re in movies.
I've been married for three and a half years now to my beautiful wife (inside and out), whom I have prayed and waited for all my life. She recently paid me a profound compliment - how far I've come as her husband, not that I was never sweet or charming, but in my willingness to show her in every provisional, leadership, romantic, and administrative way that she is my world, which has been accounted for her greater sense of security.
I am truly honored and grateful to have the favor, support, encouragement, and faith I'm such a woman who has loved me into something I've always wanted more so to be - in God's image.
Best Cinderella Movie Ever! Ive watched this countless X's. This is so underrated. Angelina Houston's mannerisms r gold lol.. Romance, Drama, Comedy, the Cleverness + that Dress w/the wings made by Leonardo Da Vinci!🖼💫💙👗🕊💎
Best remake of Cinderella ever. We saw it in the theatre twice..I viewing right after the other, we just stayed glued to our seats and never left the theatre.
One of the most satisfying fairytale ending ever!!!
My favourite movie! Everything about it is just so great. The acting, the music, costumes, locations. I can watch it over and over. Was so happy when they had a reunion on Drew’s show ✨
Although she did rescue herself from the creep she was sold to. Henry saved her also!
What a lovely scene!
So Good scene the best Cinderella proposal
This is my favourite Cinderella version ever!
This is the best Cinderella movie
I had goosebumps when he first said “Danielle”
This makes me cry every time.
This beautiful film was Oscar-material.
I love it!!
Her laugh is so pure
This is truly my favorite version of Cinderella ever! Its definitely a more realistic take on it and I feel like even though its set hundred's of years ago it still gives the watcher a sense of hope that something like this could happen to them because there's no magic or mice or fairy god mothers its just two people like any of us who come from two different worlds but are still able to find each other and fall in love....not without hardship in the beginning of course. Plus Danielle is so strong, independent and outspoken she didn't even need a man to save her in the end and henry knew that which made him fall for her even more. Ughhh I just love this movie so much
We all need a Henry in our lives
Drew Barrymore is such an amazing actress
This scene gets me ! My favorite part is when Danielle says no the part where you said my name !
One of my most favorite movie’s. I loved this part.
I love this movie. Made you want to cry so happy and I loved where those hateful witches got what they deserved.
Favorite Cinderella movie! Nothing beats this for me.
“I kneel befor u Not as a prince...but as a man in luv...
One of the best proposals in any movie.
PERIOD.
When she starts crying and he thinks he messed up- it’s so cute!
Greatest Cinderella ever in life . Finally a girl that save herself outspoken and didn't have to change to be loved but was loved for it.
One of my favorite movies ever😭
This was always the best Cinderella to me
This is the BEST rendition of Cinderella ever made. No question.
This still makes me cry to this day . Gah!😭❤️
The most magical moment in the film. A+ i'm crying just watching it again.
the greatest cinderella adaptation of all time. Hands down
Mi versión favorita de Cenicienta 👠😍😍😍😍😍. Ya perdí la cuenta de las veces que le he visto.
The number of times I could watch this movie forward and backwards. The best cinderella movie ever
Makes me cry every time. Truly a beautiful engagement scene for anyone that’s done it
So true. But what I see is that little girl Drew who has dreamed to be rescued from all the peril in the world is finally safe and loved.
It's my favorite film of all time, and possibly my favorite scene in a movie of all time. I learned so much from watching this film. The last two decades, such as...how to be the heroine of your own life ✨️💖
A movie that spend time developping the characters. Unbelievable. 😱
Much better than disney.
