  • On February 25, 1964, Prince Buster arrived at Heathrow Airport in London and was greeted by fellow Blue Beat musicians and a crowd of young Mods. Among those greeting him were Brigitte Bond, Siggy Jackson, and Ambrose Campbell.
This was the beginning of a month-long promotional tour for Prince Buster, promoting both his own work and Ska/Jamaican Music, in general. He even appeared on "Ready, Steady, Go!" (which, unfortunately, may be lost to the ages...)
This footage is significant since it also captures the moment of Prince Buster and Brigitte Bond dancing The Twist, which was photographed and later appeared in the May 19, 1979 issue of Melody Maker. That photo from Melody Maker was used by Hunt Emerson as inspiration to create a logo for The Beat,. "The Beat Girl" has since become a symbol, representative of Rude Girls and women in ska.
Additionally, Brigitte Bond is also the earliest-known transgender ska musician - please check my channel for "Blue Beat Baby: The Untold Tale of Brigitte" for a documentary on her wildly fascinating life!
George Stroud and Anthony Wallace took photos at this event, however, it is unknown who snapped the shot that inspired the Beat Girl.
If you have ANY information about Brigitte Bond or saw her perform, I would love to hear from you - please comment below or email brigittebond1964@gmail.com.
