  • 450 Bushmaster Hornady Subsonic 395 grain SUB-X ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Ruger American Ranch with 16 inch barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

1050 at the muzzle is 977 fps at 100 yards based on hornadys ballistic calculator, only drops to 921 at 200 since its .300 B.C
1016 muzzle is 951 at 100 yards with the same caclulator and 900 @ 200.

Yeah when they start slow and heavy they don't shed speed like the hi velocity ones do. Those probably got enough to still be very deadly at a thousand. You might have to hold a couple stories high but it'll get there 😉

These did pretty well but why are people reinventing the wheel? It’s a low velocity 45 rifle what’s wrong with a 500 grain LRN? Throw a gas check on it and you have a decent hunting round

Most of the same bullets are loaded in 270win which he has videos on already
The 6.8 western only has marginal velocity over the 270

I know they hit about 12” low vs standard velocity in my rifle

How did the red tip make it to 19 inches? Crazy

I have used these in 300 blackout. Havent had a doe make it out of the field with shots up to 80 yds. Shot a couple coyotes up to 110 yds (required a holdover at that range) Dropped like they were hit with a 300 mag. Its really weird when u fire off and it sounds like a 22 and hits them that hard.

So here is a question that I cant seem to get to the bottom of. Im looking to remove the 1x24inch twist barrel from my 450 AR and put on something with a better twist rate for shooting subs and supers. I see some have a 16 twist and others have a 20, so whats the best option and why? Is there really a difference? Typically there really isn't that many heavy type projectile available for the 450 so is the faster twist even needed? My plan is to use some heavy Maker Rex copper bullets for subs.

I wouldn't use it at 100 yards but I think it's probably OK for 50 and in.

Might be fun to bust a hog in the ear at 50 yards with that brick. OUCH. Did you ever get any of the newer 150 grain Hornady Black 350 Legend ammo to test? Figured while you were doing big bore stuff why not ask.

I know you said that, but if it's good enough to make a video about it, then it's should be worth your while to sight it in first. Common sense really. 😊@masonleather
