    It’s fun to watch you bump into very similar issues and celebratory moments as when I designed and built my fiberglass wedge popup. Looking really good! You’ll find that the canvas adds likely more lateral strength than the gas struts do. This thing is going to be insanely strong- don’t worry about that one bit.

    ratchet strap is useful for compressing gas strut. That's what I used for replacing my ursa minor top struts. :)

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  Před měsícem +1

      I tried for 30 minutes to get one on there, and I just couldn't get it to stay on the end.. a couple of times when I did it was then blocking the ball socket so I couldn't get the strut onto anything.
      It was quite the gong-show for a while there!

    • @ailo4x4
      @ailo4x4 Před měsícem +2

      I've done that with the big struts on my forward fold trailer and had to use a proper car tie down strap. It was difficult but not impossible to get the ball on. And I could NEVER have got it on by hand!

    Early train station had particularly high ceilings. At a time when when there was no AC, hot air would rise to the top. It also allowed for a lot of natural light to enter. Mostly the tall buildings were easily recognizable in cities where rail was the major transportation.
    I was shocked the lower strut mount went directly onto the composite box with a few rivets given the force put on it!

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  Před měsícem +2

      The rivets went into the steel frame around the top of the composite box

  • @theborednerds
    @theborednerds Před měsícem +2

    For a wedge, I believe you would simply treat it as a 2nd class lever. Like a wheel barrow. The load would be heaviest at the bottom and lightest at the top. The math is similar to what you did for straight up.
    Back of the napikin says you could get by with the same struts, since you're only lifting ~1/2 the mass. It probably changes if you reverse the way the struts mount, but if you're using the same bifold lockout mechanism, it probably doesn't make a difference.

    Great work. This makes me want to take our VW Eurovan (T4 in Europe) and turn it into a vertical roof from the factory wedge. It would allow sleeping either way depending on if the ground has some slope and some space for the kids to get up there and hangout during crappy weather.

    Awesome job Dan! The calculations for struts is always fun! Elizabeth and I used 2 - 150lb struts on the teardrop hatch. It closes and opens easily and does not move in high wind at all. As for canvas, we sourced ours through Sailrite using their Sunbrella fabric for our awnings. Great video sir!

      @TheRoadChoseMe  Před měsícem

      Open and close with one person is no problem.
      In theory I could leave it in wedge, but I think it will be pulling really hard on the latches and I don't like that idea.
