Dropped phone calls, AM radio signals, secret reels of tape forgotten in a library, switchboards, crossed patchlines and an anonymous phone call lead Fay and Everett on a scavenger hunt toward the unknown.

@@zorack7030 that list is very very much main stream and genre blockbuster. They're great films to be sure, but they're very surface level or introductory as far as film goes. This film is a love letter to the likes of Serling, Outer Limits, Ray Bradbury Theater and 50's sci-fi in general. I found quite a few paralels to this and Close Encounters, which is one of my all time favorites. I thought that Vast showed much more restraint in its delivery though. But that makes sense because Speilberg was a much younger director then.

I'm not easily impressed by art, but this was a magnificent piece of cinematic understatement.
Andrew Patterson takes something very simple - a scattering of very ordinary people, one evening in a very ordinary town - and in just 90 minutes gives it the sweeping grandeur of _2001 A Space Odyssey_ while remaining tightly focused on two or three key characters.
    Should have been oscar-nominated.

Spoilers ahead- please don't read anything or even watch the trailer before seeing the movie! You won't regret it.
I think what I love about this film was this. A lot of UFO and alien films are heavy on action and creeps but within the parameters of a film. You're expecting to suspend your disbelief. You don't come out of a heavy action alien film scared to walk home. Instead, this film felt like something that actually could have happened. Because this is probably how it would go down in real life. That's really hard to pull off in an entertaining way, but they absolutely nailed it! "Nothing happened" and it made me creeped out to walk under a night sky.
I was told to watch this film with no idea what it was about, and I think that is how everyone should see it. I think it will get the maximum appreciation it deserves that way.

I actually have a cool theory for the unexplained ending if you want to listen:
    Spoiler Alert!
In the end we see Fay and Everett holding each other but we don’t see Maddy (the baby), and afterwards we see many ashes on top of the recorder where they were standing. My theory, and hear me out, is that they just wanted the Maddy and incinerated Fay and Everett. The old woman’s kid heard the alien words and walked out to get taken by the “people in the sky”. Maddy was ALSO a kid who had a single mother and was probably very isolated from her tiny town. And the old woman said that was the target. But Maddy wouldn’t have been able to walk out to a spot where they could take her in. So the aliens orchestrated the all of the things that Fay and Everett did to take her in! The babysitter had seen the UFO hover near her house and called Fay to tell her. Fay then took Maddy with Everett and rode with the other couple who told them to get in, to the exact place with they wanted. You can later see that the couple is affected, and “possessed” by the alien words but not Fay and Everett. The “people in the sky” could only take in people who were “possessed” by them, so they wouldn’t want Fay and Everett. So why would they go through this whole process just so Fay and Everett could be burned to ashes? They wanted MADDY!
(And if Maddy was in the middle of their embrace she could of been taken after... idk no ones gonna see this comment)

The scenes were a reference for the show "The Twilight Zone", and all of it made it feel like a really long episode from the classic series, there's nothing disappoint on the story, for the low budget it had it made quite a story. Impecable.

I hope this movie does really well! Not only because I want more of this story and of these characters, but because it is a great movie. I was excited and engaged throughout, and really enjoyed the 50's futuristic, art deco, Popular Science, type esthetic. Definitely reminded me, in a good way, of TV shows of old, like the Twilight Zone, so they did a great job with their take on that.
My only criticism, other than I wish this was a TV show to get more of the characters (Maybe a limited series?) was that they dialog in the beginning is too fast. I am hard-of-hearing, and so rely upon subtitles a lot. It was difficult to keep up with what everyone was saying.
    Still 8.5/10 👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐

(1:30) I really love the "stop smilin'!" part. 😉
I just watched this movie last night...well, this morning, technically (started just after midnight). I watched it on a fairly nice home theater system with surround sound ("just" 7.1 and not Dolby Atmos, unfortunately) and I was immediately sucked into the story. Long story short, by the end I was almost moved to tears. I don't know why, really. I'm sure this movie will affect others differently, but for me it must have struck a nerve or feeling buried deep inside. Rest assured, it wasn't because I want extraterrestrials to come "take me away". Far from it. Rather, it was because I was so drawn into the story/plight of the two main characters. The movie did a very good job of bringing you along for the journey they were on. I don't know. It was _just_ the movie I needed to see right now. Thank you for making this movie available to the general public to watch. I REALLY wish I could get it on blu-ray, though. Hopefully someday that will be made available, as well. 😎
