Cup feeding a newborn

  • When breastfeeding is a struggle, a cup is a great alternative to bottle feeding to help get baby back to the breast. Watching baby’s cues are essential. You’re not pouring the milk into baby’s mouth, you’re giving baby control over drinking.
Breast and bottle feeding work completely different. A baby at the breast used mostly muscles of the tongue and jaw to express milk while a baby uses more cheek and lip muscles to move milk from a bottle. Both positive and negative pressure are needed to express milk from the breast. The back of the tongue creates a vacuum in the mouth as it pumps up and down to draw milk in via negative pressure while the front of the tongue compresses the breast to help push milk out. Bottle feeding uses mostly positive pressure from compressing the bottle nipple. It is an easier process to move milk from a bottle than the breast. A cup uses the same muscles as the breast. Using a cup actually promotes breastfeeding and is a great alternative to supplementing baby when breastfeeding is the goal.

Omg.....Just give the poor things a bottle!

Why a cup are not a bottle breast doesn’t make sense to me? The plastic cup doesn’t give a breast or a bottle comfort would give the closeness to a mother.

I had to do this with my then 5 months old granddaughter when I was watching her and she was refusing her bottle because she was super fussy and refusing her bottle but was eating ok. She took to the cup without a problem and later that night when my daughter went to breastfeed she refused and again the cup worked for her. In the morning she woke up with a fever and chicken pox. Poor thing was not feeling well and didn’t want the breast or a bottle but again the cup worked

OMG ... Baby police ... NUTRITION is whats important here, NOT delivery method. Bottle feeding can lead to chocking just as easily, and leads to colic and ear infections. The baby got fed, learned what he needed to do, and looked content after feeding. Seriously thats covers all the bases.

This is sad to watch. For Gods sake let him latch on or give him a bottle. Who feeds a newborn out of a cup? He's sucking in a ridiculous amount of air for what? Poor kid.

I would have loved to know about this when my were babies! They hated the bottle. So when I had to go somewhere my dear MIL was beside herself. The baby is completely contented. You naysayers want the easy way instead of what’s best for mom and baby. This professional lactation is awesome. 🤩

WOW...never heard of this. My great grandson was born with tongue tie and my granddaughter had a horrible first week trying to breastfeed till his tongue was lazered free. (Should've been done before releasing the baby) than baby nursed but had trouble for weeks. He's 6 months old now and 100% breastfed but what a hassle for months. Has they taught the cup feeding baby would've had his fill of milk and no fussiness. Thankyou

I'm a retired GP (in my early days) and I've never learned this. I've never had children myself, however, I will be checking with my med school and residency program to learn if their students/residents in FP take lactation classes. I could have been immediate help to new parents plus enrolling them in classes. So many clues I was unaware of that didn't need overkill in meds, tests, or even frustration with parents (or family). Thank you.

He is just a little doll! And you taught him to drink from a small cup. Amazing! He seems to be doing very well and that little tongue is the sweetest!!! Awww 🤗🤗❤️
