One of the best product reviews I've seen--thank you very much!!

Very nice review. I used to use x17 system, but moved towards filofax/william hannah which can accomodate more and is more modular. Also flatability of inserts is nonexistent and requires strong bending of the notepad to stay flat unfortunatelly or you might loose the clamp hold while doing it. Thank you. Great review as always.

I wholeheartedly agree that their website is hard to navigate. It's hard to understand the difference between each cover model, and the sizing is also not immediately easy to grasp. I've emailed them to ask about VAT charges (since I'm in the UK, my order shouldn't have VAT added) but still no reply.
I like their eco credentials and really love that they're trying to create a super durable product, but there's definitely a lot of room for improvement, both product- and website-wise...
Thanks for your review, it was very useful.

Excellent, detailed review! I'll definitely check out your other videos as well, it is really nice too see a very practical and detailed review such as this - when you pulled out the A5 measured paper I was so happy - no one ever does this! :D

Thanks! I just try to provide the information I would want to know before purchasing an organiser, and also fill in the gaps that other reviewers leave.

Vielen Dank for this review, I love when people give reviews that are more than just talking for 10 minutes to justify their purchases.

Got myself one with much stiffer leather and it is not as floppy as yours. Yes, that simple stitxhing adds to the bulk, but I find it easy t carry. Still getting used to it, using it only with one notebook - my Rhodia Goalbook, other clips only for add on papers/ invoices/ bills.

Brilliant review. I 100 percent agree that the website is terrible. With some of the versions, it's difficult to judge the layout because you have to rely on photos with odd angles that don't show the whole.

Excellent review! This is the first time I watched anything about Roterfaden and I feel well prepared; objective and personal points you have included are really helpful together with showing all the features like moving out the clasps and showing their functionality. Thank you!

I bought this binder recently. It's practical and delightful to the eye and to touch. The version I have is the one with the thin elastic closure, similar to the Travellers notebook.

I suppose for many it comes down to whether you want a stiffer product or the more floppy type. Their website is a mess for sure, but I find many websites of smaller producers are lacking. An easily navigated website is a must. That they removed the functionality options is disappointing. Pen and pencil holders is pretty nonnegotiable for me, so I’m torn about whether I would buy one or not.

Thanks for the review. I use thicker notebooks and attach the clamps to the back cover. Works really well!

Leather looks great. Good flatability too. Interesting. I'm also keen to value products with a low carbon footprint. Thanks for sharing.

with the bigger notebook you put the clamps in the hole were the material is not attached to the inside paper … slide those clamps in there and it holds 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks Tamara. That can work, but as the gap between the outer and inner layers of the notebook usually closes when you close the notebook, you have to twist the clamps to lay flat, which does change the possibilities available for the other clamp pairs.

I bought the printing blanket + merino (DB_22) to prevent the floppiness. Mine is quite stiff and lays totally flat. Also, the merino pockets are not loose or tight, they hold things quite well. I think the clips stay better where you put them in the traditional elastic spine ones as well.
My impression is that the leather + suede versions without the elastic are more business-fancy, slightly less utilitarian. I think they look really good.
The clips are ever-so-slightly more customizable than you point out. If you pull them out slightly on both ends of the cover, you get more notebook-thickness-space because the point at which the notebook touches the clamps is closer to the pointed edge, which is more forgiving. I have a 12mm softcover notebook that I am currently using in this way, in the middle of the notebook. I have a much thinner notebook in the first clip and a few sheets of paper in the third clip.
The other option is to use two clips for one thick notebook, one on each end page (the very beginning of your notebook on the inside, and the very end). I know people fit Leuchtturms in them this way.
Here is my set-up so you can hopefully see what I mean: imgur.com/a/nXk6PXm

Many thanks for your input, Gwen. I agree (from what I've seen posted by others) that the traditional elastic spine does hold the clips more firmly. If I look at your images, it looks like the depth of the clamping point for your thick notebook is still under the 5 mm, but I do take your point - pulling the clips out slightly will change the pressure point. Great idea about using two clips for one thick notebook - the system is certainly flexible.

I do not think you quite understand how to use the clamps for all they can be used for/all the ways they can be used. Watch a few other Roterfaden videos, see how they use them. I gather you are not a fan, even mentioning the spine being “lumpy” just where the grooves should be running down the spine eventually to hold the clamps. This is what I see in this review. Not a fan of the website either, eh.

For the record, I always watch many, very many, videos about the products I'm reviewing so that I can be sure to test them in as many ways as possible, reflecting how others use them. But my reviews are always my own experiences and opinions, and never a copy of anybody else's review nor a sales pitch for the manufacturer. The clamps can be used in any way that clamps can be used - wind wool on them or stick pictures to the refrigerator with them as you wish - I don't think the viewers need me to enumerate all those uses. I did illustrate as far as possible the uses I had seen others put those clamps to.

Seems like a wine drinker reviewing beer and saying that this beer is not their preference.
