  • Zack Snyder might've achieved some level of infamy with some of his narrative choices in the superhero movie genre of the DCEU, but he still remains as one of the most talented visual filmmakers, especially in one specific area: style. Today in Film Perfection, let's take a look at one of the most flamboyantly stylistic films ever, 300, and try to understand what stylistic visual techniques Snyder uses and how he uses them.

    300 (2007)
Sin City author Frank Miller's sweeping take on the historic Battle of Thermopylae comes to the screen courtesy of Dawn of the Dead director Zack Snyder. Gerard Butler stars as Spartan King Leonidas and Lena Headey plays Queen Gorgo. The massive army of the Persian Empire is sweeping across the globe, crushing every force that dares stand in its path. When a Persian envoy arrives in Sparta offering King Leonidas power over all of Greece if he will only bow to the will of the all powerful Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), honest trailers 300 everything wrong with 300 everything wrong with shazam cinemasins watch 300 full movie online free the strong-willed leader assembles a small army comprised of his empire's best fighters and marches off to battle. Though they have virtually no hope of defeating Xerxes' intimidating battalion, Leonidas' men soldier on, intent on letting it be known they will bow to no man but their king. Meanwhile, back in Sparta, the loyal Queen Gorgo attempts to convince both the skeptical council and the devious Theron (Dominic West) to send more troops despite the fact that many view Leonidas' unsanctioned war march as a serious transgression. As Xerxes' fearsome "immortals" draw near, a few noble Greeks vow to assist the Spartans on the battlefield. When King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors fell to the overwhelming Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae, the fearless actions of the noble fighters inspired all of Greece to stand up against their Persian enemy and wage the battle that would ultimately give birth to the modern concept of democracy.

Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, Amber Heard, Joe Morton, and J.K. Simmons co-star. Directed by Zack Snyder.

Exactly, and that is what Zack Snyder delivers with 300. The film utilises the darkening of the shadow to create a sort of comic effect where the shadow area in comics have no detail since they are in complete darkness and that is achieved with the darkening of the shadows. Slow-motion added to the significance to important events such as when Leonidas throws the spear and Leonidas kicks a messenger down the bottomless pit. This film despite the lack of meaningful plot or complex characters delivers in Zach Snyder's choices in cinematography and artistic style.

Exaggerating and depicting the battle and its combatants into a more poetic story.
For example how the monks described the Viking raid on Lindisfarne:
"In this year fierce, foreboding omens came over the land of the Northumbrians, and the wretched people shook; there were excessive whirlwinds, lightning, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky."
And the same goes for 300 when Dilios speaks about the events of Battle of Thermopylae.
Ephialtes of Trachis: Being depicted like a deformed creature because of his betrayal against Sparta.
Xerxes: Described as being a god among men and portraits him as a giant made of gold.

I mean, remember that it's a comic book. Frank Miller wrote this story specifically to make action and poetry out of a historical event. It's not real, but we know that. What it is is a visual spectacle and a traditional hero's tale. Miller liked these stories about heroes dying for something noble and crazy depictions of history. He loved the idea of noble warrior cultures like the Greeks and the Samurai and stuff, so he told stories about them in exaggerated ways that played up the things he loved about those ideas, and not to tell a historical documentary.

Old school. What the heck? 1. These movies had progressively more storytelling problems. The editing of BvS was horrible and Suicide Squad was an absolute disaster of a movie that only made money due to the huge hype surrounding it. 2. If anything it's the casuals that cannot tell if something is being misrepresented. 3. The MCU progressed in a planned way. Thanos was being teased since forever. How can you claim, that Marvel just picked up a DC script, that they didn't have access to, and made Infinity war and Endgame out of it? That's ridiculous.
But you're right on one thing: DC/ WB caved in, however not so much to the audience and more to the journalists that made excuses such as "the audience doesn't like dark and gritty". In reality DC just didn't hit the right strings, failed to properly set up their heroes and their philosophies/ motivations, because WB rushed it to catch up to the MCU.

For me, that is where it pays homage to the comic book style of the source material, which is told in still panels, by slowing way down and freezing (such as the long shots on Xerxes). This whole move is shot to pause on frames that might have been in a graphic novel, and the director added action to those with slow motion. I always interpreted this film as being more meta. It sort of delves into the idea of archetypes and how they inspire us, as this film discusses how stories fuel us. This makes sense as Watchmen is a response to this, asking whether we can still be inspired when our heroes are being degraded and deconstructed. Sucker punch is about us learning that stories themselves are meaningless, we project meaning onto stories. It's about learning that stories are inside us. One could interpret his DCEU films as being the anti version of this as the DCEU explores the characters inside the stories trying to find hope in a trapped, claustrophobic, chaotic world. There is more stuff in his films of course, like existentialism and Carl Jung's archetypes.

It's refreshing to hear someone talk about what Zack Snyder does (or did?) well. He's clearly screwed up at least a couple movies with his vision or lack thereof, but I personally thought "300" was, and still is, an amazing movie. Yeah, it's probably mostly because of style, but it's an incredible style and it works very well. I particularly like how you pointed out WHY certain style elements worked so well. It's easy for a layperson like me to sit there and say "That movie worked" but it's much more challenging to articulate WHY. I think you managed to nail it, everything you mentioned was something that I kind of knew, but only understood at a surface level.
I think that 300 is unjustly maligned due to a sort of "Zack Snyder hindsight," like people dislike the movie now, just because he went on to make some bad movies. Truth of the matter is that nearly any Hollywood-level director is probably capable of at least one good movie. Just look at another example in this video, M. Night Shyamalan. "The Sixth Sense" was pretty amazing. And while others will probably argue with me, ALL of his other movies were degrees of mediocrity, including "Unbreakable" and "Split" (great acting performances cannot overcome bad writing and bad directing).

I remember seeing this in theatres.
When they got to the point where they would first battle I was thinking "How in the world are so few gonna even be believable going against those odds.
But the casting of basically bodybuilders and the opposite which 90% were smaller guys on that side....When I firstt saw the SloMo and watching them cut limbs off etc ptc.....IT MADE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE SPARTANS WERENT MEN, THEY WERE THE EPITOME OF A WARRIOR< GIANTS AMONG ANTS, GODS AMONG LITTLE %"$ MEN LOL.
Point being....They sold it to me....I believed for the duration of that movie that if anyone could pull off such a nonsense feat....It was the ones in that movie.
Cool movie. But SNyder is still hit and miss and Im generally not a fan of his.

You should make a video on Watchmen, a very underrated comic book movie by Zack Snyder

Filmento could very, very easily be a professor with how thouroughly he details everything, like how he points out that the different types of blurs have different narrative weight. Easily one of my favorite creators on the platform
