It’s pretty interesting how every 10 years (WM 10, 20, 30, 40) the main event featured a wrestler who was never viewed as a top guy and far from the company’s usual first pick to be in the main event of Wrestlemania, but was a such a huge fan favorite by many to the point where they had to pull the trigger and give them their moment in the sun. Bret Hart, Benoit, Daniel Bryan, and now Cody.
And each of those instances involved said wrestler having to overcome more than one obstacle on the WrestleMania show itself
Bret had to fight his brother earlier in the night before fighting Yokozuna in the main event
Benoit had to beat both Triple H and HBK
Bryan had to beat Triple H in the opening match and then beat Orton and Batista in the main event
And now Cody has a high stakes tag team match on Night One the night before his title match on Night 2
The years that end in the number 4 have this unspoken tradition it seems

One that would be in my top 10 is HBK v. Bret Hart III at Survivor Series 1997, the final hype package before both competitors make their entrances.
I was a Day 1 WWE Network subscriber. I remember having to connect my PS3 to my parents living room tv so we could watch it all together. Now every tv they & I have have a Roku either via stick or built in the tv. What a different 10 years make.
oh I remember getting a bit heated at times because it just kept buffering.

Internet becoming so ubiquitious in the last 10 to 15 years seems to have made it harder to forget things and thus made the passage of time seem much less noticeable.

The thing that really sticks with me about Daniel Bryan's victory in the main event is that one of the very first things he did after the match was over was walk over to Connor Michalek, the young boy suffering from cancer that for the previous year and a half had gotten himself familiar with the WWE roster and company brass, which all started because he wanted to meet Bryan, his favorite wrestler. Bryan, this child's personal hero, greeting Connor right after winning and telling him that he wouldn't have been able to do it without Connor's support, gets me in the heart every time I think about it, especially knowing Connor died only 19 days later.
I will always respect Bryan for making his moment Connor's moment too.

Lesnar proceeded to stay with the company for nine years, hold most of his world titles, and return to Wrestlemania main event four times after this PPV. He was used to crown Seth, Roman, Drew, and Cody as top guys, keeping all of his credibility after each loss. I don't think they would have kept the finish the same, knowing that Taker wouldn't retire for six years, but there was much more upside to giving the win to Brock than people thought at the time.
And now Taker's streak potentially was ended by a dude involved in a shocking, vile sex controversy and time will tell but his part in it may have even been criminal.

Considering there was at least one (confirmed) creditor who stated that the lawsuit is against Vince, Laurinaitis, and WWE. Brock’s name was never even stated in her lawsuit, and was only alluded to as a “wider symptom of systemic exploitation” from Vince and Laurinaitis, but I guarantee 96% of the people spreading misinformation never even read or looked up the ACTUAL details of her suit.

Expecting Brian to start reviewing 2012-2013-2014 shows now...
The sad thing with Batista's 2014 return is that pretty much nothing went the way he had hoped. He wanted to return & be a cocky heel, a la Hollywood Rock, but Vince McMahon told him to play a babyface, only for that idea to be rejected by the fans because he wasn't Daniel Bryan. Eventually Batista would turn heel, but it was solely to reunite Evolution with Triple H & Orton, but even that wasn't quite what Batista wanted, so it's no surprise he bounced after the 6-man tag against The Shield (though that match was absolutely awesome, so at least Dave ended that quick run on a good note).
I'd argue if he returned the next year instead against lesnar it might have been a bit more interesting
Batista was a superb heel and Vince forcing him to return as a babyface is just proof how off his instincts had gotten at this time
@@Venemofthe888there were plans for them to clash at SummerSlam if the Batista V Orton match had panned out and they did tease the match a few times on Raw where Lesnar and Batista were squaring off at each other, would've been incredible to see these guys in a proper 1v1 match

The way the Warrior died always gives me chills. You're right, he couldn't have timed his return any better. At the time, it really made me think that some supernatural force was controlling his fate. If you saw him on Raw the day before he died, he didn't look well and I think more than a few people noticed. And then what he said that night "Every man's heart beats it's final beat..." as if he really knew that the next day would be his last on Earth. How did he know? It's still a mystery to me today.
I think the whole return just took it out him

man, watching brian’s reviews from ten years ago compared to today is night and day. he speaks with wisdom and experience now with just the right amount of marking out while still staying stable and focused on providing thoughtful analysis using his knowledge and understanding of the business and fandom.

Haha, "old". I was in the sixth row for Wrestlemania III, when I was six. That same year, the go-to-kindergarten substitute teacher for my class was the semi-retired 93-year-old Mrs. Webb, born in 1893. I knew elderly people who knew veterans of the Civil War well. And, to top it off, my great-grandmother Edna turned 100 in 1987, the same years I went to Wrestlemania. She always loved showing the family group photo from when she was three: of her parents, her maternal grandparents, and her great-grandmother, whose lap she was sitting on. I have a photo of me sitting on Edna's lap when I was two. Edna's great-grandmother was born in 1792. So, I have a photo of me sitting on the lap of a woman who, in turn, sat on the lap of a woman who was alive when George Washington was president.

Fascinating conclusion there. I would argue that Wyatt vs Cena at WM30 going the way it did is vital for their Firefly Funhouse match years later. Without that one-sided match, we don't get Wyatt's magnum opus.
Taker vs Lesnar was sad to watch at the time, and the moment when Taker becomes concussed is so easy to spot too. You could tell that Lesnar hadn't really a plan and they were just hurtling towards the finish.
I was there in New Orleans that night for this. It was my first WrestleMania I’ve ever been to. I was with two friends and together, we were living our dream. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since it happened.

I admittedly thought that this show was the best Wrestlemania after I watched it ten years ago, and while I agree with your final assessment, I maintain that this may have been the most powerful Wrestlemania ever, in terms of emotion.
I do agree Bret vs Owen and Triple H vs Daniel Bryan were some great opening matches in Wrestlemania history however Eddie vs Rey at Mania 21 was a classic. Very good opener.
I truly miss the WWE Network stateside but this brings back memories of watching this Mania on it! Thanks for sharing this review, Brian. ❤
The first time I met Jerry Lawler, we had a conversation for a few minutes. One of the questions I asked him was if he was the only announcer to actually drink the Mountain Dew. He confirmed that he would occasionally but the others never touched the bottles.

Wrestlemania 30 was probably the last time i was actually emotionally invested in a wrestling event. It was entirely due to the story with Daniel Bryan, as he had been my favorite indie wrestler for about a decade up to that point and I really wanted to see him get that moment.
I also have this DVD box set so it holds a special place in my heart along with 29 in East Rutherford
I love how you still have your home star runner action figures in the background!! I named my first band, which was a ska band, fatty’s big chance!! After the teen girl squad episode, the battle of the bands one, just thought about that. I haven’t checked the website in so long, but those few years, they were killing it! I bought the strong bad and friends album back then, but I wish wish wish I would have bought the action figures!! Dunno why I’m ranting, but just wanted to say I miss that series and appreciate your series and that you have always had those figures in the background!! Thank you! When I first discovered the channel back in late 2015, I actually ran across the WrestleMania XXX review on Dailymotion while scouring various video sites for more WWW content. (Fun fact: that's also where I found all of the old blocked videos that were edited or not on CZcams at the time.) All these years later, I'm glad it's receiving the Classic PPV Review treatment since this year marks the tenth anniversary. With that said, my hope now is that the various Manias Brian has been able to attend live and in person will also become a part of this segment in the future.

Thank you so much, this was the first wrestlemania I ever attended and always wanted to go to another one. Words can explain how much it felt for me looking at the stage in person and not on t.v I actually shed a tear knowing the one of few things I ever wanted to do I was able to do it. Thank you for posting this review and bringing back those memories for me.

Fun W3 fact: this is the first classic pay per view review where the event took place AFTER the creation of the channel.
It's always so weird to see old videos by content creators who are still around now. Between the youthful faces and voices, grainy camera quality, echo-ey mic'ing and try-hard attempts to be over-the-top sarcastic, funny or controversial, there's just such a charm to it all. It really was a different time back then.
I think the main issue with Cena vs Wyatt is the fact at this point the crowd was resigned about Cena's character. They knew he would never change and he would win even if it doesn't make sense. Also the story with Wyatt pushing Cena to the "dark side" was already tried with Kane in 2012 ("Embrace the hate") and we all know how it turned out... So of course they weren't as invested as WWE wanted to.
Which is too bad because Bray's character at the time was a breath of fresh air and Cena actually sold fear and concern pretty well during the build-up of this match (and great promo package too).
At the time I really enjoyed the match (minus the finish of course) because it was more storytelling than wrestling moves and Bray was so captivating to watch. Maybe I should rewatch it, I didn't expect you would reject it ^^
I think if the result had Bray taking advantage of Cena's indecision and pulling off the win, forcing Cena to re-evaluate himself to a point where we do briefly see "The Dark Side of the Cenation" for like a couple of weeks or so until Cena inevitably rises above it to blow off the feud with Bray.
I was going through Kidney failure at this time. The day after Wrestlemania, I was on the WWE website and saw the streak dates as 1991-2014, and about had a meltdown as if it was an ominous moment; because I was born in 1991. I kept thinking, yep, that's the sign. I'm not gonna live to see the next year. Thankfully, a lot has changed in ten years
Being the match right after the end of the Streak was the ultimate Wrestlemania death spot.
WM30 was my first Mania I attended and when Brock pinned Taker, it really went dead silent in the Superdome until they showed the 21-1 graphic and the crowd collectively groaned in unison when that graphic popped up. Thank goodness Daniel Bryan's win at the end of the night helped the crowd celebrate on Bourbon Street afterwards. That was one memorable night
Be amusing if a WrestleMania gets scheduled in Salt Lake City, UT or Sturgis, SD for a biker theme.
Man, Orndorff with that 'stache looks like something out of a western. Like the old, veteran sheriff or something. Was a good look, honestly.
A personal favorite moment in this show was Jerry yelling "Special Moment" during the Hogan, Austin, Rock segment. Just felt very funny how he delivered it.
Wrestlemania 30 got me back into wrestling after a 5 year hiatus.
Crazy to look at the Shield from 10 years ago, they have damn near a dozen World titles between them since then, a plethora of US and Intercontinental Championships (including an IWGP US one).
And not to mention they've been at the top or just beneath it no matter the US Promotion they wrestle for.

Insane that Divas match was considered to be in death spot and in 2024 at WM 40, Bayley vs Iyo Sky was at the same spot. However it ended up being a top 3 match of the weekend and crowd popped big for Bayley.

Lesnar and Vince went to the Hospital after the Taker match apparently. The Streak ending so meekly was sad.....it deserved a better ending than Taker barely able to work.
