Close. I wiki'd it -- he was 78, three months short of 79. Still, for a guy in his late-70's, he still had perfect comedic timing! These old funny-men from the Golden Age of Cinema (many were Jewish) make comedy look easy but it really isn't. Timing is critical in every single thing you do. Groucho understood this. His thick New York City accent certainly helped.

1972, my friend bought me tickets to see An Evening with Groucho at Carnegie Hall, emceed by Dick Cavette. NYC traffic was worse than expected, so my buddy drove his black VW Beetle on the shoulder. It felt liks a scene out of a Marx Brother's movie. We made it on time.
Groucho was 82 years old; a bit slower, but in some ways even funnier. He sang, told stories and jokes. And the audience adored him for who he still was and what he gave us - himself.
Groucho still influences comedians, even indirectly from the older, influential commedians who admired and learned from Groucho. He's a National Treasure.

Groucho was born in October 1890, so he was 78 (just short of 79) when this interview was filmed, and the man clearly hadn't lost a single comedic beat despite being retired. He passed away in 1977. That New York Jewish accent is so iconic with him - do any real people speak like that anymore?

He isn't too bad considering his 83 years. You gotta figure that he has one of the distinctive voices that people like. They like his personality very much. Thus even when he goes slightly off-key? We aren't bothered. And maybe part of it is that since we mostly know him as a comedian? We can't take him seriously. And this covers up lots of funky pitch mistakes.
