    If sci-fi’s not for you, The Martian is the perfect book for you. It’s surprisingly not about science or space or Mars at all (even though it is) but rather one man’s struggle to stay alive long enough to be rescued. It just so happens the backdrop for his story is Mars. I can’t even count how many times I was laughing out loud, even though I was stressed and worried. I was so taken aback by how much I loved this book. I put this book down several times today intending to stop reading and do something else, but within an hour I was always back to it. Absolutely loved it. I was already excited for the film adaptation, but now the remaining month-long wait seems practically unbearable. But, if Mark Watney can handle over hundreds of sols, what’s another 30-some earth days?

Also, the whole thing with Commander Lewis' disco music was hilarious! When he sent her the message like, I don't blame you at all for leaving me here, don't feel bad, but WHY DISCO?! :D

    I saw the trailer and was sold on the cast alone- Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wigg?! What?! I immediately picked up the book and LOVED it! One of my favorite parts was in chapter 6... I couldn't stop laughing when I read it!
    "[Teddy] pondered. 'He's stuck out there. He thinks he's totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man's psychology?... I wonder what he's thinking right now."
    "Log entry: Sol 61

  • @leslieisepic
    @leslieisepic Před 9 lety +1

    This is by far my favorite book that I've read this year. No other book holds a candle to it. I have the original paperback cover of it with the astronaut, and it's just so pretty. Mark Watney was just a perfect human being in all of his wiseass remarks and genius. I loved reading from the crew and the back and forth between the crew and Mark was just brilliant. I really got the sense of family, which is what a crew should be, especially when they're going to be spending months (humph, years), in outer space together. Also, there were some logs that were marked as audio in the book, though the majority I'm assuming he typed up. But I can imagine the movie producers wanting all the logs to be audio because it's easier to get across to the audience.

    I'm glad that there is a movie to this excellent novel. So far the trailer looks really good and i've heard great review on both the book and movie. The author's story of how it got published is truly inspiring for an indie writer as myself. I hope my YA suspense/thriller stories would be adapted as well on the big screen. The movie-version of The Martian woud definitely get nominated on award season. Mark my word!

    I had so much fun with this book! (Read it earlier in the year to prepare for the movie). It was refreshing. Also, even though I was always terrible in science, I liked how the 'science' was explained in such a way that even I could follow it, but not in a way that I was being talked down to.

    Okay, it's time we had a chat. I have read a few books you have reviewed and recommended and I've pretty much agreed with you on all of them. but this one takes. the. effing. planet. (see what I did there?)
    I got it 4 days ago and have not been able to put it down. I first snagged it with my monthly audible credit but after barely 3 chapters, I stopped at a Barnes and Noble to snag the very lovely hardcover (the pretty one which turned out to be 20 bucks but I totally would have paid anything by that point). I am officially obsessed with all things Mark Watney. I'm on there last 35 pages and I caved and watched the big trailer. I'm so glad I waited because it really would have spoiled everything. I love this book and I adore you for recommending it. You are my favorite BookTuber and it's because of you I've thought about starting my own channel! thankyou thankyou thankyou! ♡alz

    YES! You finally read The Martian! It's my favorite book. I LOVE it! And I can't wait for the movie either, Matt Damon is the perfect Mark Watney. But the book is just . . . the bomb! It is SO funny, and sarcastic, and interesting, and stuffed with action where you're like, this is gonna go so bad. I mean, who thinks that it's a good idea to bring rocket fuel into an oversize tent and set fire to it?! It's doomed to go wrong in one way or another! I love all his crazy solutions and experiments, and how his solution to one problem leads to the next because of some tiny little thing he forgot or stuff that was simply out of his hands, like the airlock exploding off from the Hab and when his drill electrocuted Pathfinder. It's really tragic, but you can't help but laugh at the absurdity. I loved the part where NASA has just found out he's alive and wonders what kind of genius thinking he's doing, and the next log entry reads: 'How come Aquaman can control whales? They're mammals! Makes no sense.' LOL. Also when he has to figure out the size and direction of the dust storm, and he compares the frustration of the situation with driving in the wrong direction on the freeway, but for an entire day . . . at a snail's pace. I just did that this week, and my sympathy for Mark just doubled all the while I was going in the wrong direction. You simply can not help but love the guy and his fight to survive. Another one that had me laughing; 'I experimented with Potato Skin Tea a few weeks ago. The less said about that the better.' =D - And I 100% agree with you on the movie advertisement on the cover. I hate it with a passion! I bought the American version in paperback and it also has the advertisement now. I was so pissed. I tried writing several bookstores with no luck. So I decided to try my luck and ordered the American hardback version, and lo and behold, it came advertisement free. I was so happy that I, for real, jumped up and down with glee. WHY do they used the book covers for movie advertisement? It should be banned by law! If I wanted to watch the movie version of a book, I wouldn't be standing in a bookstore now, would I? But hey, now I have two versions of the book; one just for me, and one I lend to the people I tell to read the book, and lets face it, EVERYONE should read this book! - Andy Weir is awesome!

    A must read. Warning! It is impossible to put this book down. Make sure you set aside some time to finish in one sitting and not make my mistake. I read throughout the night and was late to work. I also consumed it in audio format in one sitting as well. Figure 5 hours to read the book or 11 hours for the audiobook.

    This book was soooo funny . Mark Watney is a guy that I'd love to hang out with for a day just to hear his smart ass comments. Awesome book

    The humor was the biggest surprise for me in the book, and definitely my favorite thing about it. I thought it was going to be all doom and gloom, but NOPE. It WAS thrillery and intense like I thought it'd be, but it was also mostly Watney making poop jokes. The only negative thing I could think of to say about the book was that a Watney evaded one or two situations (like the storm thing) a tiny bit too easily.

    I absolutely adored this book BUT it took me literally forever to read! I found it hard to keep up with all the scientific/technical bits which was maybe a little less than half of the whole book? But the characters were fantastic and Mark was an amazing person to be stuck on Mars with and when action and suspense kicked in, they punch you in the face. Fantastic book, it was just that one complaint :)
