  • In this video, I will show you how to install OpenWRT on the TP- Link TL-MR6400 4G LTE WiFi Router (hardware version 1). It is a budget router with all the basic functions: 4 Fast Ethernet (100M) ports, built-in LTE CAT4 modem with SIM card slot and of course 802.11b/g/n Wireless (max 300Mbps).
We will need to load the OpenWRT firmware to the router with TFTP method since GUI installation is not supported.
    Video timeframe:
    00:00 - OpenWRT on the TL-MR6400 Hardware Ver 1
    00:40 - MR6400 Techdata page - Download Firmware
    01:23 - Ensure that TP-Link original LAN / Web-UI IP is not 192.168.0.1
03:20 - Set Network Interface of the PC to 192.168.0.66
    03:50 - Configure & Start the TFTP
04:06 - Enter TFTP boot on the TL-MR6400 to load firmware
04:59 - Access LuCI Web GUI of the MR6400 running OpenWRT
05:55 - Access the LTE modem GUI
06:56 - Setup WAN interface as Ethernet port instead of LTE
08:37 - Next video spoiler - Advance configuration
    MR6400 OpenWRT Techdata - openwrt.org/to...
    TFTPd64 - pjo2.github.io...
    Music: Blue Dream - Cheel
Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video!

Thanks for the informative and professional content!
A was lucky seeing the title - I am just about to build small network using LTE connection - than became a bit disappointed hearing it is just for V1 models. (I have V4 :/) I am eagerly waiting the stable version for the rest of versions of MR6400.

Thanks for the comment. I found a build gamwe6 for MR6400 V4, you can try it as your own risk github.com/gamwe6/openwrt-tplink-tl-mr6400-v4/releases/tag/v20210609 Regarding the official stable release, I am have no idea if it will be available or not since the router only has Fast Ethernet ports and Developers are moving to devices with higher specs.

Sorry for pumping up this comment. I just checked the openwrt's doc and now V1, V4 and V5 of the MR6400 are supported. Are you still using the old device or already upgraded to a new one?

@@VanTechCorner hi, I am also interested on running openWRT on a a couple of these routers, mine are v5 hardware versions. However, it seems like the LTE modem is not supported by default by even the latest (23.05.0) version of openWRT. I also read on the version-specific wiki that I should follow some "QMI mode" for the WAN connection. Is this the way to go?

I have a V5 hardware that i think is supported today. But when i tftp it tp my tp_recovery.bin seems like it's not connecting to my Host computer.. already tried Windows and Ubuntu 20.04 host pc..
Windows not showing lan connected, Ubuntu not showing anything either (already check dmesg and settings).
Do i need to use a network switch to force the interface up?

Help me out, I'm having a problem with flashing via tftp. I have model MR6400 v5.20, I've been following OpenWRT guide and this video but nothing seems to be transfering via tftp when I restart my router (on the site it's written that i should hold reset for at least 8 second, i've tried holding it exactly 8 sec, more than 8 sec, nothing worked so far). Do you mind taking a look please I hate the original firmware cause bufferbloat is such a pain in the ass.

Hi, sorry for the late response. When you are using a LTE/ cellular connection, the ISP will assign a private IP instead of a public IP address and NAT is impossible. Thefore, there is no way to setup a Wireguard VPN server with the LTE connection. If you are talking about Wireguard VPN client, you can check this video czcams.com/video/0_zQAp3V18c/video.html
