My mother had the same fun relationship with the lady she used to take care of who had Parkinsons. Long story short, the lady's family only came around to ask for money and once they knew she had a decent caretaker they stopped contacting her and didn't check on her for nearly two years. My mom became the beneficiary for everything the lady had because she felt her family didn't deserve it and she had no children anyway. She said her family had gotten enough money out of her anyway. So we went from homeless to more than comfortable thanks the this kind lady who truly appreciated my mother. We are still so upset that she passed so soon. But we are grateful for what this lady had given us and the time we had with her. Sometimes blood is not thicker than water.

We have a quadriplegic in my family and the same caretaker for almost 10 years now. That woman is a Saint on earth and we consider her part of the family, since she's at every family function and holiday. She's so dedicated to her patient that we have to force her to take vacations sometimes; she doesn't trust anyone else to take care of my relative and worries about them on days off. It's truly amazing how compassionate some people can be. Live-in caretakers are just on another level. True angels.

Driss was with phillipe in both sad/difficult and happy moments..

My mom was an in home nurse for a quadriplegic man who was also non verbal, but was fully aware. He used a computer to communicate. After some time, my mom started bringing my siblings and I to visit him. We'd visit and go to the mall where he would buy us all ice cream. We started to call him Grandpa Jerry. This relationship lasted for decades until his passing a few years ago. I'm happy that we were able to bring joy to his life and that he brought joy to ours.
Its a very difficult thing to be trapped inside your body like he was, but good relationships made life so much better.

This is a great film, hilarious and accurate portrait of the carer's experience - I'm a first time carer for a young woman with cerebral palsy who has good speech and head control but no motor control below the neck. She is independent and stubborn with a dark sense of humour, and we have a lot of great banter, but there's also times she's in pain due to her muscle tone which is made worse by anxiety, and I have to help calm her down. She also has to navigate the extra complexities in dating, and I appreciate this film showing disabled people having romantic lives and needs just like anyone else. I like that Driss is from Senegal, a lot of my colleagues are immigrants from a very wide varieties of backgrounds and cultures. So I really appreciated this film.

In the remaining days of the life of my best friend, he was so weak and frail that I started to care for him. I'm not medically experienced or a caretaker, but he was my best friend and he didn't want anyone else to be with him but me... this story explained brought me back...on the unknowingly last day of his life.. I carried him out to his backyard and we sat and watched the stars at night and had a cigarette together for the last time, he gave me his glasses and said to me "I won't be needing these anymore" he passed away in his sleep that night in 2014, I still have those glasses to this day. He was of African decent and I am white, but no matter what life brings I'll never forget how we viewed each other....as brothers. This movie reminded me of our friendship and brother hood.

They don´t care that one of them is disabled and the other is a young delinquent (Driss wasn´t on vacation for 6 months, he was in jail). They are just 2 human beings bonding, realizing they have much more similarities than differences. A lot of powerful and positive messages in the whole movie, but that particular scene always gets me.

This brought me back to watching this movie with my grandmother in 2012 when she came to visit me in the states and had brought the dvd with her. I remembered so well that we would always laugh when he first took the egg, because he called it a ‘kinder egg’. Every time she’s came to visit after that, she brought me a kinder eggs because of this. It’s weird for me to think that the last time I would see her was in 2015 after she brought me kinder eggs for a Christmas visit, and went back to her country only to end up in a coma and paralyzed less than a week later because she had forgotten to take one day of her daily medication.

This is like The Upside ! The first part about fleeing the cops seems way funnier in this one 😂

Beautiful recap, as always! 💜 What’s most beautiful about it is that he treats him with so much dignity and in return is treated with respect, something they both deserve but don’t get enough of.

The fact that they are still well and alive and also very good friends is just heartwarming. Unlike 'Me Before You'.

stories about the caretaker living in luxury is maybe rare, however people do this daily in real life for little pay and the family members look down at them with no respect. many caregiver do it for love and respect to the individual who is in the mind of friends and family no longer THE PERSON WHO they knew

Man, it's fun to see a character like that. Like, in a situation where a lesser person would think of bleeding this old man dry -- and indeed, he takes the luxuries readily -- he's just the kind of person who thinks of others first. He sees "somebody not enjoying life" as a problem and wants to fix it.
