  • All 8 tracks from the album "In the Attic of the Universe" performed by The Antlers.
I haven't included the time/track breakdown, as I believe that it should be listened to as one, rather than 8 separate tracks.

What I love most about the Antlers is the cyclical nature of their albums. I can listen to this album (and hospice, for that matter) as one continuous song. What's better is their strategic repetition of melodies (ie., first song mirrors the last song) that ties the entire thing together in a nice big bow. I couldn't think higher praise if I tried.

I find it's as though the albums drive home a primary message, well telling a narrative throughout. Then there are songs in the middle,
or at the end that summarize the story and message thus far.

Just came back here to say - I love this album so much.
I almost dropped out of my college course from an incredible amount of stress.
I was on the verge of giving up, and i had to somehow write and draw my own storybook for my final project. It should not have been a difficult task.
However, i joined my course with my course with no prior knowledge in art, riding alone of an interest. Every afternoon, as i worked away on this project, i'd leave this running. It was so comforting and somewhat relatable.
And you know what, this stressful period became the most enjoyable period of college. Everyday, i'd practice and make more pages, and see my rapid improvement in real time. I even got an A+ grade!
Since then, i've 'saved' up listening to this album only during happy or stress free periods of school, to not "spoil" my memories with this album. Ironically, happier times never came, and life has been hard. However, i've since grown stronger and more optimistic!
Sorry for the long comment paragraph..
Anyways, i've since then graduated and i'll be going to join the working life soon, but i'll never forget the 3 weeks of locking myself in my room with only this album and my book to work on.

This album means more to me than hospice just because it connects a lot more to me.

    In The Attic:
Completely awake in the back of the car
    I don't drift anymore
    All's come into place
    And I unlock the door
If you have to warm up you can go back inside
But I'm not gonna follow forward
    I've come to prefer
    Sleeping outdoors
    Upstairs and downstairs
    And outside on the roof
    Small stars and steel bars
Say the ghosts up in the attic tell the truth
    Standing on shingles at night
    Can't you see that there's a reason?
The plans aren't on the ground
    They're high and hanging down
Well once I remember the words
We can climb down from the rooftop
I swear that I heard it right here
    Invasively clear
But I was upstairs and downstairs
    And outside on the roof
    Small stars and steel bars
Say the ghosts up in the attic tell the truth
    Look!:
    [Instrumental]
    On The Roof:
Stuck to a growing black balloon
My neighbors are slowly glowing maroon
Don't throw away my broken telescopes
Who has dragged you away? Who's that carrying the rope?
    Shh!:
    [Instrumental]
The Universe Is Going To Catch You:
It's been a long time coming
    It's not up for debate
    You've been a hollowed-out apple
    Though you're standing up straight
    It's later than you think
    And we're not gonna wait
If you continue to tell us if you continue to tell us
"The universe is going to catch you"
Well it was fine until you fell off
Of the face of the Earth
'Cause we would call you at home
And noone picked up the phone
But we were worried that you'd fallen
    In the river, or worse
But then you sent us back a letter it said in capital letters
"THE UNIVERSE IS GOING TO CATCH YOU"
    Come back inside
    To this house
    To your home
    Made of steel-structured styrofoam
    Nobody's out there
But someone is singing you back to your birthplace
That voice is the same voice
You heard on the same night that
    Everything glowed
    Took you into the air
And the arms of the Universe
    Kept you from falling
    But after that happened
Those arms did not come back
    So when you leapt up
    And nobody caught you
    Your neck broke
    The Carrying Arms:
    [Instrumental]
    In The Snow:
It got cold in the snow
And I just want to go home
I thought the stars were inside
I kept them hidden, I tried
But they kept screaming for release
They picked me up off of my feet
And brought me up through solid peace
And told me "You can't stay for long"
    I woke up without arms
    I stood up without arms
    I couldn't walk in direction
    With all this static reflection
I was lost inside a map
That I had written in a nap
When I heard a voice where branches snap
    I followed it home
    Stairs To The Attic:
    I decided on that evening
That I was through with sitting still
I stood up and started moving
    With a childlike fascination
For those doors that don't have locks
And the stairways that were blocked
So I dug through the obstruction
Put my fist around the railing
And each step was far apart
And far away from steps before it
And the air was getting thinner
Until I couldn't breathe at all
And if I happened to look behind me
There were miles and miles of stairs
Enough so I couldn't see the doorway
But I knew that it was there
And on the last step I was dizzy
Because there were stairs in all directions
    But I found another door
And through the door there was the attic
    Without old clothes
    Without a ceiling
    Everything had opened wide
Into the jaws of something bigger
And suddenly I saw that I was
Upstairs and outside and freezing on the roof
    Finally it had found me
The answer, the feeling, and the truth:
    That I'm small
    That I'm small
    That I'm small
I'm smaller than the smallest fireball

When I was really depressed last fall I would come how and lay and bed and listen to this album. There was something so comforting about it, and the concept of just being a small speck in the universe in general.
Ive gotten somewhat better since then, but recently Ive been finding myself coming back to this album more. Its not casual listening for me, it just makes a return in my life when I need it to, whether I know it or not.

you can totally see the influence the microphones has on the antlers' music (they were named after a microphones song!) especially the last song, which takes the "i'm small" from "I Felt My Size". the two albums do go well together!

"In the Snow" sounds almost like a mix between "I Don't Want Love" from Burst Apart and "Bear" from Hospice. It's interesting because this album was released years before either of the other two were even a thought. Beautiful, don't you think?

    • @Skullkan6
      @Skullkan6 Před 8 lety +2

I feel like that's part of the intent. Focus any more on the words and you lose the impact that the instrumentation is. I actually find them to be clearer here than on Hospice. (although I've been trying to listen to more The Antlers albums, some of their stuff is harder to take for an extended period of time without a driving concept)

    • @maggieedna
      @maggieedna Před 8 lety +1

+Carlos Diaz I'm really REALLY into how the antlers always bury the vocals. I think so much music now is so vocals-centric that having them so soft 1) makes the antlers sound really distince and 2) makes it more emotional and less situational.

Hm, I'd say that the Antlers should decide how it should be listened to - and they did give the tracks names. Even if the tracks have names, people can still listen to it all the way through.

The Antlers have a really unique sound so not many bands make similar music, but the microphones are somewhat similar in style (the antlers are named after one of their songs actually). Beach house, cyberbully mom club, the shins, iron and wine, and neutral milk hotel are also really good if you like the antlers.

It really is taking a great big dump on the listeners to deny them a time/track breakdown, because while the entire album is good and deserves a complete listen, it's hard to point out your favorite part.

Nick Power No, there are different songs in the album that merge together quite well, and makes listening to the entirety quite fulfilling, but it's still nice to see what the various songs are called and when.
