      It's so heavy handed though they repeat about 8 times things about what nice lovely chaps they all are.
      The show originally stressed how horrible war was, how soliders did unspeakable things when ransacking a city or after plunder and treasure. The soliders were not Knights in shinning armour, the show was being honest and realistic about the kind of times it wanted to potray. Secondly the scene is largely spoilt by having a famous pop star in it which just feels like one of those moments in Batman the TV show where a famous guest star pops up for no real reason.

    • @__Andrew
      @__Andrew Před 6 měsíci

      @@lw3646 Bro there was plenty of "heavy handed" moments in the show too. Sometimes it had to be. Heck half the exposition in the series was done through sex scene pillow talk lol. In the book you can humanize the average solider better. When household guards of the Starks die we have had little insights into who they were, so we feel sorry for Fat Tom when he dies. The show did almost none of this before this scene about who was actually doing the fighting. Even Jory's death didnt feel as heavy as it should have and did in the books.
      The argument too that "well there was a famous pop star in it" like, ignore it lol. His character in the show was fine. Its not really that more distracting than "YARP" from Hot Fuzz being The Hound or anything similar. If he's acting was horrible you'd have an argument but i watched this with people who did not know who Ed Sheeran was and enjoyed the scene a lot.

    Arya's face when a soldier says, "my father would be alone and I ought to be with him", and when another says," Girls take care of their Papas when they grow old".
    It's evident she thinks of Ned and how much she wishes he was alive.
    This is a heartwarming moment for Arya, seeing genuinely good people after a long time. But it's also sad to know she neither has her loving father nor has seen her family in a long time.
    Well done, Maisie!

      It's sad that these soldiers were prolly massacred by Dany in the ending.

  • @thejava.witchiswhispering

    Arya is so associated with the stranger throughout the series that I can't help but think of the Lannister soldier offering kindness to a stranger (Arya) as him offering kindness to death, and perhaps in turn death will be kind to him on the battlefield, sparing him when next they meet.
    Also, how does she always end up getting the best road food in the seven kingdoms?!
    I really enjoy the bit where Arya questions the soldier about why he would prefer his newborn baby to be a girl. She wasn't raised observing the values of the small folk, but rather observing the nobility, their preference for sons and their dire need for heirs. It's probably quite the culture shock to her to imagine that someone would prefer to have a daughter.

    • @RaphaelJohn
      @RaphaelJohn Před rokem +5

      The great thing about GoT is that you can't really pigeonhole one side as "villains". If this show started off with the Lannister family instead of Starks, we'd be rooting for them instead. Or if you only read/watch from Daenerys' perspective, Baratheons & Starks are the evil ones too.
      That's the beauty of GoT, everyone's the hero in their own eyes.

  • @MoronaNamchawt
    @MoronaNamchawt Před 6 lety +912

    I remember hearing that Ed Sheeran was going to be on the show. I was like, "Okay, that's cool, I guess... I mean, I don't really know too much about him."
    Then time goes by, I forget about it, and I watch the episode. I observe Arya interacting with Lannister soldiers and notice that she is beginning to see them not as targets but as humans. This reminded me of the Lady Crane arc from last season.
    After the episode, people begin talking about Ed Sheeran again. At which point I think, "Oh, that was his scene?" Then people begin acting like the scene was out of place. I personally hadn't gotten that impression.
    I have seen comments like "This was the worst scene" or "Why didn't Arya kill them? She's getting weak... the show is ruined," etc. Personally, however, I enjoyed the scene. My greatest fear for Arya has always been that she will lose herself and become a bloodthirsty killer with no remorse. I have always believed her to have a compassionate heart alongside her fierce vengeful spirit. Compassion is not weakness. Arya's first scene in this episode primarily demonstrated the latter, while this second scene primarily demonstrated the former.
    The men of House Frey were directly responsible for the Red Wedding, and thus winter came for them all. There is nothing to suggest, however, that these Lannister soldiers had any part in the death of a Stark.
    The women of House Frey were spared as they were not responsible for the Red Wedding. Cersei Lannister is very clearly still on the list for all she has done to the Starks.
    So no, Arya has not gone weak. Neither is Jon for calling upon Ned Umber and Alys Karstark for fidelity rather than banishing them from their castles for the sins of their fathers.
    They are picking their battles and realizing who their enemies really are.
    Here endeth the lesson.

    My favorite scene. I feared that Arya would lose her soul with all the killing and murder. The Frey's deserved their lot, but in this scene, Arya sees the humanity in her enemies, and that they all aren't evil. This is a crucial lesson for her to learn going forward, and to focus her wrath on those who truly deserve it. And it was nice to see Arya truly laugh!!

      So far the faith of the seven is shown as a false religion as it doesn't have any physical evidence, unlike the Red God, the drowned God, the many faced God etc who all have physical evidences.
      But in a classic GRRM twist, it might be revealed in the end that it is the faith of the seven which is the one true religion and the others faiths are just a bunch of blood magic rituals and trickery.
      The seven Gods have reincarnated in the form of humans, like Jon, Sansa, Arya, Melisandre, Jaime etc to defeat the white walkers.
      So even though it is ridiculed as a fake religion, in the end it will be revealed to be the true religion.
      This is something I expect GRRM to come up with.

    I really loved this scene. Not just because of Ed, but because of the other characters. They were all so warm and kind. That's become so RARE in GoT. It really brought out the fact that there is definitely some good left in Westeros, all over. You could always find someone who would be kind to you. Whether they were common people, lords or soldiers

  • @anafernandamercadoaraujo8448

    While everyone's talking about Ed Sheeran. The most emotional scene that got me here is the one Lannister Soldier that mentions that his wife just had a baby and hopes it's a girl because daughters take care of their dads when they grow old, meanwhile sons have to fight their father's wars and the worst part is they don't know why. Arya looks so sad at that prospect because her dad's dead, also shows Ned always tried to suit his children's best interests at heart and look what Robb did; fought his father's wars and lost. I think for Arya in this scene she realized not all Lannister soldiers are evil, they're just simple men that are fighting someone else's war, they just want to go back to their families.

      It was a good scene, but I think for a lot of the people the problem was that they didn't even try to make Ed Sheeran look like a GoT character, but instead had him be just Ed Sheeran. Hair style, body language, facial expression, all looked like he came straight out of a talk show and just put on a Lannister armor. It was very confusing and took you out of the moment. It was badly executed and the blame is naturally on the show creators, not Ed Sheeran.

      The scene was a nice way of contrasting the opening Frey scene. It shows that even though Arya has become a ruthless killer, she still has a human side. She wanted revenge and killed every male Frey, even those not involved in the red wedding. But she spares the Lannister soldiers because she sees them as normal people dragged into a war they wanted no part in.
      That being said, I would have preferred if Ed Sheeran wasn't in the seen. He sticks out like a sore thumb and draws most of the audience's focus. It felt almost like a parody from an awards show.

Arya, and the watcher, is weary to trust the Lannister soldiers but they are simply following their lords and bear no ill will. It was just a group of good hearted, decent lads who shared some food and wine with a girl traveling alone. Even tho mean hearted people are the key to any adventure story, as I said, it was kewl to see there are kind and friendly people there as well. Kinda makes the environment a little more believable.

He sang a few lines and said a few words and that was it. Yall are just picky
    Edit: After watching episode 2, turns out she didn't know Jon was King of the North and she's now heading North. I was wrong but I think after the the reunion she's definitely gonna go back to Kings Landing and kill Cersei.

    What I really liked about this scene was Arya experiencing friendly "enemys" for the first time. Maybe she won't be such a cold killer anymore from now on that she knows that not every enemy soldier is a bad guy in general...

    This scene was so heartwarming! Despite being Lannister soldiers, they still are human beings.

    Love this scene so much both because it has Ed Sheeran in it and because it shows how Lannister soldiers aren't all bad, they are just normal people doing what they feel they have to to provide for their families.

    Beautifully filmed first episode - thank you, HBO. Loved the segment focusing on Sandor, Beric and Thoros -- especially that scene when Thoros tries to help Sandor and shoulders his guilt. Was a great surprise seeing Jim Broadbent this first episode but a tremendous kind of easter egg. Looking forward to the second episode
