    JCM 2000: 2:55
    JVM 410: 3:20
The Marshall JCM800 might well be the most famous amp in the world of anything rock. So when Marshall started high gain channel switching amps, they often tried to incorporate that 800 sound into the modern amps as well. With varying degrees of success, I must admit. It seems to be close to impossible to get the same direct punch with a more complex channel switching head, but I gotta say I was quite surprised how close at least that JCM2000 DSL gets...and that with the option of having a killer sounding high gain channel on top...what an underrated amp. The 800 channel of the JVM sounds a bit more held back and less direct, but still does a decent job, especially considering the extreme versatility the JVM line offers.
But why not compare for yourself?

User of all 3 amps here. In order to mimic a JCM800, you must dim the resonance and presence on the JVM to nearly 0. That is a must because the JCM800 are not designed with these. Also, don't max out the bass and gain on the JVM. Try roll it back and use a boost pedal in front to add bottom punch. The magic of gain on JVM only happens when you find the borderline point between its overdrive and distortion. This way it will sound a lot more vintage like those old Marshalls.

That DSL Classic Gain Green channel is great. Add an OD to that and its even better.

I’ve found the JVMs to be very finicky to dial, but can practically replicate any Marshall exceptionally well when done properly. I personally think it can get a lot closer than in this video

The JCM2000 is a pretty amazing amp. I'm very impressed with it. The Vintage Modern is another winner. The two best post-JCM800 amps that Marshall made.

True for higher gain amps. Sounds great on an 800. If the JVM's 800 circuit was as close as everyone claims, that factor wouldn't matter, because they would have roughly equal gain.
Gain aside, the midrange was definetely more scooped on the JVM. Just didn't have the same punch. I realize the settings were slightly different, but they were 2 notches apart. If the midrange is that different in supposedly an 800 type circuit, even at 10, I don't think it'd compare.

Nice comparison, the DSL really does do a respectable 800. I have a DSL40C and it is similar on classic gain channel as well. Would love another 800 someday when funds allow.

I say go 1983-84 jcm800 2203 and be done. No experimentation necessary.. but maybe a repair or two.

The DSL sounded pretty cool, that one is definitely a workhorse. The JVM didn´t sound good, I have played one myself (didn´t try to emulate an 800) and it sounded great, so apparently, it doesn´t do 800 tones that well.
My fav of the 800 series is the 2205 model, just gotta love the diode clipping! However, my favorite amp that´s derived off of the 800 circuit is most definitely the 2555 Silver Jubilee. It´s the best amp Marshall ever made IMO.

DSL gets close, but lacks a tiny bit of the oomph of the JCM800. JVM sounds quite thin in comparison. Wonder if it's "tone suck" from the extra circuitry of multi channel amps ?

    • @bbck15
      @bbck15 Před 4 lety

my theory is that the JVM has a way tighter negative feedback loop. which limits the power amp from breaking up like the DSL or JCM. i have heard some JVM's with the negative feedback modded to JCM800 spec, and they do sound a bit fuller than stock

    Moin Lasse,
the 800 beats the other ones by far. Same thing I had (or better still have) with my JVM205H. The Stiletto Stage 1 Deuce beats it in sound, punch and versatility (for that what I need => e.g. the fx-loop as a pseudo-PPIMV) and parallel pushing tubes via channel- and Mastervolume is a great advantage, especially at smaller club gigs. Just my 2cents ;-)
    Cheers, Frank

@@Dimillio7 I miss the 2204's tone and feel. However the 2000 is much more user friendly has quit a bit more gain on tap. Plus a great clean channel and an Effects Loop. No effects loop on the 82, 2204 which made it difficult to add a delay, reverb, or clean boost for lead solos. I'm not selling the JCM 2000, really good amp.

Don't buy a 100 watt amp and expect it to be good for home use. Thats like buying a 10,000bhp Top Fuel Dragster and expecting it to make an ideal car to go shopping in. You at least need an attenuator to get the best out of a 100w amp at home.
