  • Building a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII | Airfix 1/48 | Full Build
Hello everyone, in this video I will show you how I built this Airfix model kit; Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII
These planes were brought into service as there was a capability gap in regards to combating low flying BF109's. So in order to represent that I wanted to weather this aircraft appropriately.

Nice paint work. I think you highlighted very well the importance of not rushing that part as it can either make the model or spoil it completely. If I may point out to you one small mistake easily fixable, you have mistaken the ailerons for the flaps. One should be up and the other one down . Thank you for showing us what a worthwhile hobby this is. All the best.

Thank you, I’m glad you liked it. I never knew about the ailerons (I’m still learning a lot about aircraft’s as I’m more of an armour guy), this was an over sight from me and the instructions were pretty poor, it just gave the up or down option, they could have done with some explanations.
I’ve just had a quick google because I’m sure my reference image had the ailerons down and it turns out it was a chargeable offence to have them in the down position when on the ground/parked up, guess I’ll be getting charged 😂 thanks for pointing it out though.

@@45degreesmodelling Hi Tom, just to really clarify on the comment and your reply in this thread - the outer control surfaces that you posed down are the ailerons and they control the rolling of the aircraft and move in opposite directions. The flaps are the control surfaces you can only see on the underside, inboard of the ailerons and they are lowered on the landing approach to give more lift and lower the stalling speed. They are not posable on this kit and yes, they were nearly always up when on the ground.

Apart from the ailerons, that is a really good build and impressive paint job. It looks the business. So congratulations on a fine model.
I have a couple of comments that are not meant to be criticisms, merely observations that may provide some background information:
    1. A comment you made at approx 17:40 mark about making the model look dirtier as the Spitfire XII flew "near the ground" made me smile. Although the Mk XII was introduced to combat low flying FW190s, the fact that it was a low level Spitfire does not mean it got dirtier than it's higher flying comrades! They all took off and landed at the same airfields.
    2. Although I appreciate that building the model is 'the thing', sometimes for authenticity it is worth checking on the actual aircraft being modelled, particularly if they have unusual squadron markings such as '7B'. In this case, 7B were the markings of 595 squadron, an anti-aircraft co-operation squadron with duties exclusively over central and northern Wales. It operated a variety of aircraft in this role, including Spitfire XIIs. As an Army-anti-aircraft Co-Operation squadron it was not an operational front line fighter squadron and saw no combat. These Spitfires would rarely have had their ammunition panels removed, nor suffered the harsh treatment of front line squadrons, which would have significantly reduced wear and tear (chipping etc). The aircraft would have been relatively clean looking.

Thank you for your comment. Information like this would be priceless in the instructions which were extremely basic. That’s what caught me out with the ailerons, I’ll admit I’m not the fountain of knowledge when it comes to aircraft but they (the instructions), just said choose up or down.
I did do my research but never came across any of this so thank you for sharing.

@@45degreesmodelling Thanks for your response. I do have an interest and some knowledge of aircraft, which makes up for having low modelling skills - Ha Ha! The aileron thing is an easy mistake to make and any of us might have done it. It has been done many times before and will be done again, so I would not worry about it (plus incorrect instructions). I must admit it took me a while to find that info as it is not readily available like info on front line squadrons is. The squadron marking '7B' just piqued my interest as I had never come across '7B' before. Just keep building models so we can all appreciate and learn things. It is no easy thing starting a CZcams channel.

That was a absolutely outstanding build, and the paint finish and weathering was perfect, I have alwsys liked the British grey/ green camo scheme, thanks for sharing this build, best regards from Australia 👌👍👌👍👌👍

both ailerons for bank angle are down. should be one up and one down

Very nice build for a Spitfire model rarely seen. The result is amazing.
You just have to correct the aileron positions, ok it has already been said. They cant be both down or up but should be facing in opposite balance standing. According to the laws of aerodynamics, to allow the wing to bank in a turn, the aileron is raised on the inside side of the lean.
Other than this point, it s a nice build video and a wonderful model. 👍🏻👍🏻
    Regards from 🇨🇵

Merci Beaucoup! Yes I didn’t realise what they were and just assumed they would both be ok in the down position while grounded. The instructions were really poor as they just said up or down and I chose down for some visual interest. Thank you for watching though and I’m glad you like the finished outcome!

      @@45degreesmodelling Hi,
Even with a very good level, we always learn, again and again... that's the game... I have this model kit sleeping in my stash, and it is true that it is showing its age. You are right the instructions lack precision.
I just hope one day I can build it as beautifully as yours!

well, for authenticity, you lose the competition! You can’t have
2 ailerons pointing down there not flaps. if I was judging, I just walk right past your model.

    • @45degreesmodelling
      @45degreesmodelling  Před 8 měsíci +1

Like I’ve said in previous comments, the instructions were not very clear and said either up or down. I’m not here to enter competitions, just show my build process 🤷‍♂️

Hi Tom I've seen so many Spitfires and have built a few. Your attention to detail is refreshing. It make me want to build another one! Thanks for sharing and posting. See you in the next one.

PS do you have the Airfix F-4F Wildcat 1/72? The landing gear stumped me.
