  • In this video we explain how to properly care for your mobility scooter or power wheelchair batteries. Most batteries that come with mobility scooters or power wheelchairs are considered Sealed Lead Acid batteries that are non-spill. They are usually 12 volt batteries that come in a pair, either housed inside of a battery box or covered by a shroud panel.
    Please make sure to watch this video before unboxing your mobility product that you ordered from us. Thank you for your business and have a great day!

    Since the percentage of battery discharge (or use) is important to determine frequency of charging the battery back up - I hope one day soon the manufacturers will have battery gauges that show percentage of use and not just dummy lights (as I heard a mechanic call them). If percentages are an important part of the formula, then the battery gauge should show percentages not just lights that light up.

    Remember much like automotive salespeople they make a lot more on parts and labor then they do on the actual sale of the item so the information they give you from the manufacturer is going to be to maximize turnover of parts such as batteries and not longevity which is what you should be shooting for

    At 3:40, Battery Charger Examples, you show a PowerFirst battery charger. It displays a lot more useful info than my OEM charger. Do you recommend it for a 3 wheel Pride GoGo Sport? If so, which charger model? Where can I purchase it? Thanks

    • @MobilityDirect
      @MobilityDirect  Před rokem

      The charger you're referring to is made for bigger batteries. It will not work for a Go-Go. I'm sure you can find something aftermarket that has a similar readout but these are made for the Afikim HD scooters only. They have an 8 amp rating which is too much power for the small batteries that come with a go go. It will fry the batteries.

    Hello, does it differ from vehicle to vehicle? I live in Germany and have a German senior mobile. I was told that I should charge my mobile for at least 8 hours after every trip!
    I don't use the gel batteries, they were always defective after half a year. I also have to say that I live on the mountain and the surrounding area has inclines and declines. I have 200 amp AGM batteries, they are very good, I have been using them for 3 years without any problems.

    I've also noticed that when I drove and didn't charge because the battery indicator was still full, I drove again that I didn't have the power, which is why I always charge my mobile with the agm batteries.

    • @MobilityDirect
      @MobilityDirect  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for watching and for your comment. Which model do you have? I recommend charging when the battery reaches 50% or as needed. If you think you need to charge it when it's higher than 50% it's not going to harm the battery but only do it as needed. The point is, don't charge it if you don't need to, otherwise the charger will need to be replaced sooner than later. Most of the scooters have a smart charger that will turn into a trickle charger when the reach max voltage.

    I'll be getting a Go Chair soon and in the owners manual it states to keep the battery on the charger for four hours past a "full charge." Why is this and is it necessary? It also says charge the batteries once a month for "48 continuous hours" to maintain and maximize performance. Can anyone shed some light on this? When I found out about all these charging rules I bought an additional battery box as this needs to be a full time chair. I mean four hours past a full charge means four hours on the charger, minimum. So a 6 hour charge is now almost half a day. Whats up with that?

    Does the advice about disconnecting the batteries if you're not going to be using the scooter for an extended period of time also apply to wheelchairs? I recently purchased a Jazzy Carbon from you guys, but I don't foresee using it very often (as I already have a Jazzy 600 ES for everyday use). Should I keep the battery disconnected until I'm ready to travel with it? Should I be charging it periodically in the meantime? What's the recommendation?

    • @MobilityDirect

      You should always disconnect the battery when you're not using it. You should also charge it regularly, but only when the battery has been used. Don't charge it when it's fully charged or almost fully charged.

  • @bottmar1
    @bottmar1 Před 3 lety

    It's too bad so many scooters don't have on-board chargers. The chargers are small and could easily be installed if the manufacturer just thought a little bit. Any golf cart I own gets the stupid heavy factory charger replaced with an on-board charger. All you have to do then is plug it into an extension cord.

    • @MobilityDirect
      @MobilityDirect  Před 3 lety

      Yes, it would be very easy to do and I agree but I also can see it being a lot harder to replace a charger for some models that have a shroud kit that is not easy to remove.
