    I travelled with the 701 from Germany to Nepal. I am currently returning via Central Asia. Today I arrived in Uzbekistan.
    I saved the R/G rally tower and mounted a windshield.
    With the 1100€ I can easily travel a month longer.
    But I drive with earplugs.
    The seat is the original one. I got used to it after a few weeks.
    I haven't had the problem with the side stand switch and the clutch cylinder.
    Sometimes it overheats. When I get back, I'll install another fan.
    It has now done 43,000 km and has almost no oil consumption.
    Yesterday I changed the front wheel bearings. That's it for repairs.
    I shortened the side stand by 1 cm because of the luggage.
    The suspension is brilliant. It's great fun. I also rode the Tenere 700. They are worlds apart. The same goes for the engines. The Tenere is really boring compared to the 701.
    But I'm also a rather sporty, aggressive rider. I often have to make spontaneous turns. That happens off-road too. That is difficult for me sometimes. I wonder how it would work with a fully loaded Tenere. Also picking up in sand and inclines.
    I have installed the R/G auxiliary tank. I can easily go 400km. I've already done 500km.
    What bothers me is the rear tank. I have to take off the top bag every time.
    The engine knocks quickly with bad fuel.
    Also, the Euro5 mapping is really bad. I solved it with a Fueldongle. But I will install a different mapping when I get back. Then maybe the problem with overheating will be solved.
    I will also install a sport exhaust. It's 2kg lighter and doesn't get so extremely hot.
    The Engineoil is unfortunately quite expensive abroad and not always available. But the Tenere will also have this problem I think.
    This is my personal experience with the 701 and the Tenere.
    So, please don't tear me apart now! The Tenere is more for cruising and enjoying. The Husky is for action.
    Again -> just my opinion!
    The 701 also has cornering ABS, traction control and a quick- shifter which the Tenere doesn't have.
    The latter is really fun when you're shredding passes.
    But the traction control is a bit sluggish on the road. I'm quicker with the throttle.
    Edit: ⬇️
    I'm back in Germany after 55595km.
    Since 1000km it starts badly when cold. Must be a sensor.
    I'll report what it was when I've sorted out the fault.

      Did about 35,000 km on a adventurized 690 over about a year and have done 80,000+ km on my T7 in the last 2 years. Biggest difference is I have not had to fix anything on the T7. I never really trusted the 690 to not leave me stranded. For agressive off road the 690 handled it better, for traveling and doing difficult off road while traveling the T7 can't be beat. The T7 might not be able to go through obstacles as fast, but it'll do anything the 690 could do, and keep going.

      I own and ride on daily base an « adventurized » 701 enduro 2023. Rade garage tower, scott damper, rally foot pegs, ergo seat, kriega os set (3x os6)
      O2 optimizer dongle, heated grips, arrow exhaust with cat removed (but dbkiller in), kubalink to get the bike lower (-0,75 inch) and i love almost everything on this bike.
      Quite agree it become very quickly hot (but you don’t feel ANY heat on the leg or somewhere else). The mapping is truely crapy with euro 5. The gearbox is also a bit too long (looking forward to a 14z sprocket) But you can really feel the bike, it is amazing on both road and offroad ! TKC80 is really a good allrounder tyre

    I just returned from the US riding a KTM 690 Enduro on a mix of highways, back roads, trails (gravel, loose rocks, wet grass) and loved it. We did 550 miles over 2 days and 8 hours each day. It’s light and manageable. I found 60mph/100kph to be smooth and relaxed. The suspension is excellent. It’s firm and doesn’t wallow. I found the factory settings perfect on and off road. The brakes look potentially a little weak but seemed to be perfect for this bike. Low weight is the key but especially the low centre of gravity. I could trickle along at less than walking pace. The fuel economy is staggering at 62 mpg (US) / 75 mpg (UK). With a Rade Garage auxiliary fuel tank close to 300 miles is feasible. The traction control is excellent and kept me on the trails in an unobtrusive way. The Tenere for me is too tall and top heavy as is the Africa Twin, Ducati Multi Strada and several more. Next year we do a 3,000 mile ride on the TAT but this shakedown ride put me at ease. Even looking at a potential swap of my 890 Adventure for a Husky 701.

    $1100 for a Rally tower isn't the only option for the 701.
    There is an OEM Husqvarna windscreen for 501/701. I got one for US$96 and it does a great job at reducing wind/chest buffeting and reduces vibration at highway speeds.
    I don't do professional Rally's nor spend more than a couple of hours at a time on the highway so no way was I going to fork out $1100 for a rally tower.

    • @HartyBiker
      @HartyBiker Před měsícem

      There's more arguments for a rally tower than just wind. It makes for a good place to hold a gps and switches. It's a good way to upgrade lighting. It looks sexy. It will do a better job at buffeting wind, but you are right, they aren't strictly necessary like these guys made out.

    I sold my T7 and bought a 701. I couldn't pick up the T7 if I dropped it and I can pick up the 701. 50kg makes a lot of difference off road. The T7 is a better road bike the 701 is far better off road. Added a ride garage aux tank and I now have 19l of fuel and a 350km range. Best decision I ever made on a bike.

      Ya, and the T7 is a far better on road bike, by far...a lot better. One is single the other is a twin...apples and oranges.....reliability is under question with the Husky, not the Yamaha. All this nonsense about picking up bikes is getting tiresome....don't drop it....learn how to ride...or where not to ride...so you predictably drop it......this whole ADV market is gone squirrelly.

      Totally agree with @jameshind6644 I would also go with the 690/701 if the purpose is mostly off-road. Not because it’s easier to pick-up but it’s just much easier to ride with this less weight and lower center of gravity. Picking a bike like the T7 is not a problem when you go to the gym regularly 😅 I can do that the whole day anyway I would only those the T7 when I want min. 70% on-road. Reliability wise KTM and clones are terrible

    I love my 690. I did do some work to it addressing the known issues like the side stand switch, ABS dongle, Oberon clutch slave and replacing the fuel filters. I have to point out none of those failed on me, I replaced them for peace of mind. My riding partner has a T7 and it's great on the road, I'm definitely envious of him on a longer slab section. But my 690 is so much better, over 100lbs lighter and much easier to handle and pick up off road.

  • @mntbighker

    I'm building up a 701 now. You made all the suggestions most would need to know. I see you replaced the muffler. You didn't mention the complaints that the stock cat/muffler gets insanely hot. The stock brake lever is supposedly made of taffy. And it may punch a hole in the case if you leave everything stock. The 701 is pretty expensive to make an ADV bike. But in that weight class it's sort of in a league of its own. I didn't want another 100 pounds, and I have also street ridden a GS1200. That thing was way too top heavy at low speeds for my taste.

    I test rode a 701, Tenere 700, and KTM 890 Adventure R and felt the 890 was the best balance for on and offroad. It had much more punch than the Tenere on the highway and at low speeds its low slung fuel tanks made it much easier to stop without putting my feet down and do slow speed maneuvers. The 701 was really easy to maneuver but was not as comfortable on the highway. I ended up getting a Norden 901 because the KTM 890 is just ugly 🤭 and have put nearly 7,000 miles on it in 6 months. I have hit some gnarly single track on it and made it up some obstacles Teneres could not. I think my ideal setup is a Norden 901 for longer trips and a 701 for offroad trips closer to home. They are all phenomenal bikes honestly and which one is better is a question of which one is better FOR YOU.

    I am on my 2nd 701, you don't have to do the tower for wind protection, just do the puig windscreen, it is like a hundred bucks and makes a HUGE difference. I ride mine here in Wyoming and our freeways are 80mph, is it as good as my Triumph 1200 gtpro? Of course not, but it makes a huge difference. Seat concept wide is what I have, initially I thought it was a problem, but it isn't in hard stuff. It actually kind of helps with the leg locking with the knees? Dunno, I got used to it and love it, but when I first put it on I worried it would be a problem, it isn't for me. Get a throttle lock, huge help with getting a break on the highway, you will find not using it very often but when you do man is it nice. Bam, she's a completely different machine. I just got the anakee wild tires for mine, and the shop balanced them, which is new to me on the platform, normally I change my own tires. Man, do that, holy smokes is it nice.
    Also for nav I use the garmin 700i, which is amazing. My buddy was looking at all kinds of different adventure bikes and I told him to come over and try mine, I implored him to get up high in speed and hold it there to see the difference. He came back after 30 minutes and said, you're right this is perfect. He got one and is pretty much setup the same as me, he has a better skid plate than I do, mine is the husky metal plate, his is the vanasche, get that one it is really good. Another important thing that people skip on the build is the dongle, get that before ANYTHING, it is super stupid how after turning the key off your settings default back to whatever safety morons think is good. This will get you hurt offroad. Mode 2 with ABS off and TC off, it is just perfect. In sand the TC will get confused and cause you to crash, as well as all the downhill wanting to drag the rear and such.
    Gas cap, you're right that should be first and the dongle 2nd. I had on my first 701 the key break off after doing the El Camino el Diablo. I ordered the gas cap after this and it is weird how KTM thinks this bike is all that offroad and they put that terrible key thing on there, makes me think it is a law. I had my buddy order his gas cap before anything else and the dongle (my buddy hadn't gotten his dongle yet delivered when we did the UT southern BDR and White Rim) so it was frustrating for both of us trying to press that TC button which takes quite a bit of pressure to do. It also confuses you on the trail when you start 2nd guessing yourself after getting tired.

    On the cable vs hydraulic clutch… I honestly think the simplicity of a cable is better for long term/distance reliability…
    I did 45,000km on my 790 Adv R through some epic terrain here in South Africa with skipping a beat.. my 890 Adv R gave me 30,000km of no trouble to…On to 2023 890 Adv R n 6,000 later no worries either… if you’re concerned just run a back up cable parallel to have a easy swap on a tour when needed.. no seals, piston or fluids to worry about… old school cool man

    • @motoskillsfactory
      @motoskillsfactory  Před 8 měsíci

      The bikes I’ve worked on with hydraulic clutches you can’t simply attach a cable. The slave cylinder has a piston that pushes on the clutch rod. There’s no external lever to move with a cable. The seals blow and leak oil into the cases and you don’t know it’s leaking until it doesn’t work anymore. You have to change the slave cylinder or rebuild it with new seals. Not a side of the trail job.

    • @ryanroux5429
      @ryanroux5429 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Hey there
      Perhaps my reply was not clear, old school cable clutches allow for a 2nd cable to be run parallel to active clutch and brake cables.
      In the event the active cable snaps you simply hook up the back up..
      If the bike is set up with a hydraulic system you would need address the failure in the pressure system which involves seals n fluid etc.
      Hence my preference for old school cables.. just saying
      Funny thought the 2023 890 Adv R runs hydraulic brakes... oh wait... that's so we can have ABS...
      If we are ever lucky enough, KTM or any other manufacturer will give us a bike with cable clutch and brakes (ok maybe lekker hydraulic brakes for those who want ABS) without any computers.. just give us fantastic motor n SUSPENSION performance...
      No additional weight on ABS systems etc
      We as adverture travel enthusiasts could be happy 🙃@@motoskillsfactory

    I have a 2021 690 with a Rade Garage air box and Wings exhaust. The fueling at low revs/throttle was terrible. The bike had none of the grunt a 690cc single should have - especially a KTM. My understanding is that even a Power Commander cannot overcome the closed-loop lean fuelling to pass EURO 5 emissions. I was going to sell it because of this, but finally found a fuel dongle from Rex at Fuel Torque in Queensland that tricks the system into giving enough fuel at low revs/throttle openings. Absolutely revolutionised the bike; it now rips hard from idle to redline the way a KTM single should. Also significantly lowered the temp of the motor when ridden hard. Best mod you can make. Does reduce your fuel range though…

    The end comment between the two is pretty much why I bought the 701. I'm more of a woods rider and not much of a long distance cruiser. I have only had it a short while and while it may not be the most comfortable seat it's doable and not nearly as bad as some claim. Only mod I've done so far is Rally pegs. Other small things will be added eventually but the nice thing is if you don't want to you don't have to. It's pretty good just stock.

    The slave cylinder cylinder deal is due to less than great o-rings. Replace the OEM o-rings with better ones and the problem is solved. Unfortunately most aftermarket companies offer replacement systems for a decent amount of cash. All we really need is 50 cents in hydraulic rated o-rings of the proper size.

    The Tenere 700 was the most anticipated and hyped bike with the biggest let down/disappointment I've ever experienced in my life. Lot's of guys like them and they are better than a majority of other bikes on the market but they don't hit the marks that a lot of guys praise them for. I truly believe those that are a huge fan of the T7 have very little experience with other bikes in the same category.

      I have the T7 and while it has it's faults there's a reason so many guys love them as an all rounder. I just hired a KTM 890 in Australia for 1800 km and after all the hype was shocked to find it was nowhere as good as my T7, it didn't have the torque of the T7 ( it does on paper) I was always changing gear, buffeting on road was unbearable , sounded like my gs650 thumper and the low COG made it unstable at low speed, it did however feel a lot lighter than the T7 and could probably be ridden hard offroad, but for adventure riding the T7 is a better allrounder (for me at least).

    • @texlee1640
      @texlee1640 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@silverdale3207 As a former owner of two 890 ADV R's I 120% disagree with you and so does everyone who ever rode mine, including two T7 owners. The 890 Adventure R is hands down the best bike in class, by a long shot. Better suspension by a mile, more power by a mile, better balance, handling, brakes and weight distribution by a mile. It has all of the nannies that the T7 lacks like cruise, quick shift and adjustable traction aides. It's not even close!
      The T7 isn't a trash bike, I am not saying that in the least, it's a quality built budget bike in the class (if one can be had or found for MSRP) and with that in mind all of those short comings allow many to justify it due largely to the savings in purchase price. The bike really should have come as the new World Raid version in order to better compete with the KTM and Duc but who knows if we will ever even see those.

I didn't do hard offroad because it had a big insurance excess on it so can't comment on suspension there but on road it was no better than the T7 which is adequate only, I can pull smoothly from lower revs on the T7 whereas the Ktm seemed to chatter if I didn't change down, and I hate electronics on a bike so that was a negative. Even the other guys that rode it said it had the typical KTM nervous front end, so I'm pleased you enjoy yours but for me the T7 is a far nicer ride experience in terms of ergos, wind, smooth power , looks and engine sound. But that's just me ,everyone is different, we should all ride what we love .

      And VW beetles are very reliable too 😉 , T7 is a super boring and very average bike , over priced for its super low spec and junk suspension , it’s simply a road bike with styling , too top heavy , too fragile off-road with cheap quality wheels and frame - it’s time it had a big update and some serious development because it’s had none other than styling .

      I think it’s this “Ready to Race” mentality where fast riders stand most of the time and want a firm seat for good feel of what the rear tire is doing. A narrow seat makes it easier to maneuver the bike and reach the ground in technical riding.

    Comparing how single vs twin makes power ok get it. 701 is awesome doing what it is intended for, I would not want to ride for hours on the highway. T7 is not enduro machine but great on fire roads twin tracks.
    890r vs tw200 seriously. I want ground clearance but bike has high seat gets old. Why not compare 500 vs 701.

    Picking up a dropped bike really isn't as bad as some people say. It's all in the technique.
    Facing away from the bike, grab the hand grip with one hand, the frame, or under the seat with the other hand and step backward until it's standing up. Look it up online. They show 120 pound women standing up Harleys. Of course this won't work as well in bad terrain, so you'll have to improvise.
    Good luck

    The suspension on the 701 is absolutely awful, it’s soo harsh. I was faster on my ktm 950 adventure which is a 200kg motorcycle. WP suspension is not what it was when it was around in the early KTM days. The journalists never tell you this. The explore fork is-rubbish. If you want a lighter bike buy a 500exc and fit a larger clutch cover which increases the oil capacity. The 701 is still a heavy bike.
