Something I want to see on this channel is your going on an occational overnighter to test one or two pieces of gear, at the most, like a pack and a knife, or sleeping bag and rain gear. This kind of video would really be convincing of the quality of a knife, tent, bag, pack in actual conditions that would tell me, and others, that we certainly want to purchase the item(s). I know you like car camping but spending an easy solo afternoon and night out there, walking a short distance in, then breakfast, testing gear, can really tell us something about the products and you we don't get from these static reviews. Thanks for all your hard work and keep up the great content, but get into the woods too. I know you love them.

Everything you need to know is in the video, including the big one that is right under your nose even though it's not obvious with a casual glance: Experience. If you just started at a new job for instance, can you do that job anywhere nearly as fast and efficient as someone whose been at that job every day for 5 years? What if it's an inspection type job? New guy has to get out the magnifying glass and the checklist and he's slow. 5 year guy practically knows if it's right when he picks it up. He knows what to look for and he knows instantly if it's screwed up. He knows what to expect because he's picked it up and looked at it thousands of times. He knows what the individual components mean. Want proof? I can think of no products where my assessment was wrong. Someone can have a faulty product in occasion, be it a flashlight or a knife. I can't control THAT. That's manufacturing. If there are limits to what I know because it's a totally new or unknown product or company, that's made known in the video. Yet the video still has value because it's an in hand assessment from someone with a lot of EXPERIENCE looking at those kind of products. Sometimes I go out on a limb and accept totally unknown products. Those take more time. But I like to stick with stuff I know something about. Take Vanquest for example: I've been looking at them since they were new. I can compare them to similar brands that are older in which my experience goes well beyond CZcams. I know the people behind the company and what their philosophy is and what they are trying to do. I know where they came from (Maxpedition) and why they broke away and started their own company. Take LTWK and Bark River.... I know the people behind the company. I know the people building the products. I know what THEIR experience is. I've been in their shops and seen them built. And I've handled hundreds of knives and can know what it's going to do well at within 1 minute of holding it in my hand. What you don't see in my videos, is comments section full of "this didn't do what you said it would". The big X-factor comes down to the end-users SUBJECTIVE tastes. People stuck with certain CZcamsrs over time because they find their tastes are similar. CZcamsrs favor certain brands because they know what to expect from them. I don't have to go wander the woods for a week to determine if an LTWK or Bark River is any good. I know they are good. I don't review every thing they make either. I choose things I am interested in or fit my tastes. Then determine what they are best at and who they might be best for. Another example: That $20 Walmart Bivy. That wasn't a recommendation. That was a curiosity/spur of the moment video. "Let's open this up and take a look". Not long after another CZcamsr called the company and they basically said it's only for good weather. Which is exactly what I suspected in my first look on-camera inspection. The problem is people aren't considering what is actually in the video. They don't LISTEN to what I SAY. And they don't consider my experience level in gear assessment. The proof is in my accuracy. Some people might want more specific details, like deep specs on a flashlight. What's important to them might not be important to me. And that's why I've always said you should have more than one CZcamsr for certain things. Bottom line: I don't need to take every product on a survival adventure to know what it's about. What I need is to have it in my hands. The other reason to watch several CZcamsrs AND read written end user reviews on a new and UNKNOWN product or brand, is a reviewer can ONLY speak to what's in their hand. Maybe they got a good one. Maybe they got a bad one. Only way to know is if you collect more information than just the one person. CZcams reviews are one piece of the puzzle. But with knives and flashlights in particular, in the end it's YOUR subjective tastes. And that's why watching a CZcamsr that you know over time has the same or similar tastes as you matters. Joe New-guy might need to go spend a week in the woods to know what a knife can do. But that's because he doesn't have what I have: knowledge and experience.
Hells Yea! Got my 1st tactical/day pack last yr. really helped distribute weight. Loaded it up with my medical needs and binders full of schedules and in general doctors and what I was going threw at that time. I replaced my school style back pack that was a horror and contributed to my back and neck issues. I’d get into city almost daily got the many diff docs I would see. Plus I still had a smaller hand carry bag for my loose ends. Well didn’t take long to find a reviewer showing off another class of pack that I immediately could see it fitting all my carry items and with cross the chest straps as well as waist. As my health got better my pack would decrease in carry items. Also as I planned and thought threw, the pack lent itself extremely well for loading my tools and medical kit for when I became healthy enough to venture back into my local woods. I do agree with having a bug out bag in truck;another for house and a bag larger then the 1 you reviewed here for when I’m confident enough health wise to do week long nature hiking. This bag reviewed here fits many inbetween catergories and I’m certain I’ll acquire 1. Thanks Chris
I bought this pack from Ben at Living Survival. I love it and have been using it daily for carrying two laptops, my medicine, a PFAK, and all my work related gear. I use the dividers as cushions between the two laptops and it works great, very well protected. I have the Hydra Water Bottle holder on one side and a Condor dump pouch on the other side. My only complaint is that I wish the main compartment opened up more on the one side, more suitcase style. Thanks for the video.
Hey Chris, I have a recommendation for a couple backpacks you should check out. The first is the Karrimor SF Sabre 45. It is a pretty no frills top loading pack. It is based on the British military's PLCE pack. Instead of MOLLE, they utilize large pouches that can be added to the side of the bag via large zippers, four plastic buckles, and side compression straps that loop through webbing on the add on pocket. The pack can go from a 45 liter pack to a 70 liter pack in seconds (one version of add on pockets is 12.5 liters). The other pack is a monster. It is also made by Karrimor. It is a Karrimor SF Sabre 60-100. That pack can be either 60 or 100 liters by simply unzipping two expansion zippers. The 60-100 model also has an adjustable back frame which can be tweaked while wearing the pack fully loaded. The padding on the shoulder and waist strap on the 60-100 is amazing as it is both wide and thick. The quality of materials, workmanship, and features is simply amazing. I highly recommend you get your wallet out when you check these out. If you do purchase one, get a yoke (makes a 25 liter day pack out of a set of Sabre PLCE pockets), a set of Sabre pockets, and a Predator pocket (smaller but more organization). The Sabre and Predator pockets are compatible with any Karrimor bag that has PLCE attachment points. I ordered both packs and accessories off Amazon.
Great looking pack right there. I carry a maxpedition sling pack for work/EDC. I've had it for who know's 5 or 6 years now and it still looks brand new, but this Vanquest looks just as durable.
Got the Trident 20 a few years back as an EDC, still looks new. I do wish it was a bit larger. I carry a set of rain clothes, some wool garments and a tarp in it as it is also my get home bag. Nice review.
I love my Trident 20 and the new larger version looks fantastic. I just wish they would make in red, it would be the perfect CERT/NET team kit bag. I know there probably wouldn't that much demand but, man it would be perfect. Great video!

+Daniel Till I Die Actually not a tarp. I had my Frogg Toggs jacket though. There needs to be a Grabber All Weather blanket in there bare minimum, but I probably wouldn't have bothered anyway since I was planning on leaving after the video anyway.

mon I filled my backpack with about 45-50lb to see how far I could go without stopping I got about 4-5 miles and I was tired people think they are going to go far I say try and do it often don't think your going from the couch to carrying 50 lb far because it feels like 200 lb after 5miles
+SNOOP U 2 Yep. Distance backpacking requires going as light as humanity possible. But that's a specific situation. Using a backpack as a kit when you might not go that far... Nothing wrong with that. In that case, it's easier than putting it in a different bag and carrying that weight on one shoulder. That WILL mess you up.
PREPAREDMIND101 I tried it just incase I had to get out of town if the roads are shut down due to traffic I live in the bay area in California and three different refiners right now Chris we are dealing with smoke from the Napa and Santa Rosa fires the wind blew it toward Richmond San Rafael area red sun whole towns are gone its real that is why I practice just incase all I leave with is in my backpack people have left with just the clothes they had house disintegrated in the fire nothing but ash now we have American Refugees to add to the rest of the homeless population. sorry for letting you know what's going on here but I do feel it's a matter of time it might just happen here because where I live it was once all marsh land 150 years ago pomo natives lived here they were fishing people many many sea shells was found here a whole mountain of shells
Don't know if it has been said but the extra thing you thought you put on (the little piece of shock cord on the right) is for actually having a big item like a tripod in the water bottle pouch and securing it at the top as well. Good Video might need to purchase this one :(

+Robert Campbell I don't like sling bags, but that's my subjective opinion. I find that loaded up, they will hurt my back over time due to the uneven weight distribution. But I'm also 44 and have a slight curvature of the spine, which is a good and a bad thing. I like them in theory, but they aren't comfortable to me personally.
Chris, I agree. The quality of the Vanquest was the seller. I typically use a Red Rock, 5.11, or Grey Ghost bag but your video showed the quality and same comments echoed at other sites reviewed.
Not hating on it. But, those dividers do remind me of a shoe bag you hang on a door. Might be a good selling point to convince the wife to buy a few packs. I mean she wont realize ones missing.
+stinkydroolface They are optional though. Velcro, not fixed. I have one of the shoe hangars that hangs from the hangar bar in your closet. I put my favorite knives in it.
I like the vanquest bags but I can't drop $200 every time I want a new bag I would recommend redrock gear for a good budget bag I really like there assualt pack it is great but I also took the hip straps off it's a great bag overall
Yep, it is fancy, has lots if pockets and do-dads on it.... but I am guessing the pack weights almost as much as the gear in it..... my current waxed cotton pack cost $17. (Waxed it my self) empty it weights less than a pound. I have never filled it up as I only carry about 20lbs. The last one I had lasted me about 40 yesrs. This one I have had about 10 yesrs. I do have bigger and fancier packs and I have tried them... especially for winter camping. However, I just keep coming back to my old favorite. This thing is pricy ($250 vs. $17) but that is not even the real issue here for me. I know it is probably a matter of differing philosophies, but do you really need all the pockets, zippers and fo-dads that add weight.... and make it more difficult to get at things. All I have to do is open one flap and reach my hand in to find what I need. In a hard storm my waxed canvas kept things dry. Like I said it us probably just a difference of philosophy in doing things..... just saying.... Later.....
+Scott Hill It's not that it's a backpack. It's the materials used and the quality. If USA made materials isn't important to someone, it's not needed. I don't always get "the best" of everything, but some things I feel it's worth it to have at least one of "the best". Imagine you are in the stereotypical TEOTWAWKI situation and all your gear you need is in your pack. How bad is it going to suck if your cheap pack starts coming apart at the seams? Everything is optional. If the features aren't important to you, you shouldnt buy it. Like knives, there are hundreds of options.

Chris FYI, Hypalon isn't a made up fabric. It's the same material that a lot of the newer inflatable boats(like Zodiacs) are made out of.

Have you ever owned any osprey packs? I would like to see you do a review on one, specifically the Kestrel, Atmos or Stratos

PREPAREDMIND101 I tried it just incase I had to get out of town if the roads are shut down due to traffic I live in the bay area in California and three different refiners right now Chris we are dealing with smoke from the Napa and Santa Rosa fires the wind blew it toward Richmond San Rafael area red sun whole towns are gone its real that is why I practice just incase all I leave with is in my backpack people have left with just the clothes they had house disintegrated in the fire nothing but ash now we have American Refugees to add to the rest of the homeless population. sorry for letting you know what's going on here but I do feel it's a matter of time it might just happen here because where I live it was once all marsh land 150 years ago pomo natives lived here they were fishing people many many sea shells was found here a whole mountain of shells

Hey, during your review in the rain, your VANQUEST TRIDENT 31, did it got wet on the inside a lot or a little bit?
Don't know if it has been said but the extra thing you thought you put on (the little piece of shock cord on the right) is for actually having a big item like a tripod in the water bottle pouch and securing it at the top as well. Good Video might need to purchase this one :(

I use the waist strap to keep the pack close to my body when running. Keeps the pack from bouncing everywhere and pounding your kidneys.

Hypolon was used In the 1970's for fishing rod handles.
I wish they made one without hook and loop. That always makes a pack stand out to me, so immediately I start wondering what's in the pack.

+Robert Campbell I don't like sling bags, but that's my subjective opinion. I find that loaded up, they will hurt my back over time due to the uneven weight distribution. But I'm also 44 and have a slight curvature of the spine, which is a good and a bad thing. I like them in theory, but they aren't comfortable to me personally.
Chris, I agree. The quality of the Vanquest was the seller. I typically use a Red Rock, 5.11, or Grey Ghost bag but your video showed the quality and same comments echoed at other sites reviewed.
Hypalon? I believe inflatable boats are made of that stuff, some of the nice ones.

Not hating on it. But, those dividers do remind me of a shoe bag you hang on a door. Might be a good selling point to convince the wife to buy a few packs. I mean she wont realize ones missing.
+stinkydroolface They are optional though. Velcro, not fixed. I have one of the shoe hangars that hangs from the hangar bar in your closet. I put my favorite knives in it.
I like the vanquest bags but I can't drop $200 every time I want a new bag I would recommend redrock gear for a good budget bag I really like there assualt pack it is great but I also took the hip straps off it's a great bag overall

Yep, it is fancy, has lots if pockets and do-dads on it.... but I am guessing the pack weights almost as much as the gear in it..... my current waxed cotton pack cost $17. (Waxed it my self) empty it weights less than a pound. I have never filled it up as I only carry about 20lbs. The last one I had lasted me about 40 yesrs. This one I have had about 10 yesrs. I do have bigger and fancier packs and I have tried them... especially for winter camping. However, I just keep coming back to my old favorite.
This thing is pricy ($250 vs. $17) but that is not even the real issue here for me. I know it is probably a matter of differing philosophies, but do you really need all the pockets, zippers and fo-dads that add weight.... and make it more difficult to get at things. All I have to do is open one flap and reach my hand in to find what I need. In a hard storm my waxed canvas kept things dry.
Like I said it us probably just a difference of philosophy in doing things..... just saying....

I don't always get "the best" of everything, but some things I feel it's worth it to have at least one of "the best". Imagine you are in the stereotypical TEOTWAWKI situation and all your gear you need is in your pack. How bad is it going to suck if your cheap pack starts coming apart at the seams?
Everything is optional. If the features aren't important to you, you shouldnt buy it. Like knives, there are hundreds of options.

There way you dress, your demeanor, your mannerisms, the general energy you are putting out... All that means way more than the pack or the color.

I haul a base weight (pack, sleep system and hammock of 12 pounds. Food for 5 days, water for 1 day and extra clothing for a total of 27 pounds.
This pack would bring my total to 32pounds
+robert jeffery This wouldn't be the right pack for you anyway. Like I keep reminding people, tactical style packs and backpacking packs are apples and oranges. Different uses. In your case, it wouldn't be the best use.
Over thing I don't have is an Ultralight Pack.
